A loft conversion or an attic conversion is the process of transforming an empty attic space or loft into a functional loft room, typically used as a bedroom, office space, a gym, or storage space. Loft conversions are one of the most popular forms of home improvement in London UK, as a result of their numerous perceived benefits. The installation of loft conversion is a complicated process, and whilst it may be possible to attempt a 'DIY' loft conversion, the large amount of work involved often results in many people choosing to contract a specialist loft conversion company to undertake the loft conversion task.

Loft conversion - The first stage of any loft conversion is a close inspection of the loft space to find out its exact dimensions and whether loft conversion is feasible. On entering the loft one needs to establish if there is adequate room under the ridge of the roof. A measurement of 2.3 metres is required to allow enough headroom, although you may find that you can still get a useful loft room from as little as 7 feet (2.1 metres), and there must be at least 2 metres clearance above the position of the access stairs. 1.9m above loft staircase is sufficient for one bedroom loft conversion.
Due to the slope of the roof and the required loft conversion access headroom, the feasibility of loft conversion is dependent upon a minimum height of approximately 2.2 m (7 ft 6 in) measured from the joist to the apex. Providing that this requirement is met, most properties will likely possess the potential to have the loft space converted.

Loft conversions are an expensive way of increasing space in your house, yes in some instances you can only go upwards however extensions are always the cheaper method. Spending 45k on a any kind of work to your house you would assume that you would recoup the initial outlay and ideally increase its value to make you money when you come to sell however a loft conversion would not necessarily even recoup the initial outlay.

I see you had a smoke detector on the landing but I didn’t see one in the loft room so you didn’t have full detection throughout in habitable rooms. Did you form a protected stairs instead? It’d be interesting to hear how you mitigated the risk of fire from the 2nd floor.

Even if they form a protected shaft there still need an interlinked SD at first floor landing and upgrade all doors in the stairwell to be FD30. I hope they did.

loft bedroom door are 30min Fire Rated, no need for smoke detector in loft bedroom.

By adding the FD30 to the loft, did you also change all the other doors of habitable rooms that lead onto the stairs to FD30 to form a protected stair or were they already FD30?

Can you do sound insulation on a loft conversion from outside noise? I live next to a motorway so I was wondering would it be possible to block noise coming in?

Yes additional insulation can be installed reducing outside noise.

In London this would be far more than £20k. It'd be closer to £48k once you included VAT and that's before you also have to pay for the bath tub, tiles etc and carpets
