Nick, Gen trailer is awesome. Just an idea not in anyway negative; If you could search Craigslist or a scrap yard, get an I beam trailer tongue from a mobile home , separate each rail and lay them flat over you tandem wheels. Mark and notch the I beams to be able to bend them into fenders. Allow for tire clearance with axle articulation. This would give your tires a break from having stuff dragged over them and possibly tearing the sidewall of the tire. If you weld 12 gage steel to cover the inside of the fender to trailer deck your load becomes free of roadgrime {saves a lot of buying new sawblades}. Awesome trailer as is though.

Nice trailer. I have suggestion that when your running your winch cable back in after loading. Is to keep your hand much farther away from the winch. All it would take to have a bad day is a frayed cable snag your glove.

Way to go on that trailer. I'm building one this summer. I thought I would incorporate tracks down each side for a chainsaw mill. I bought the saw and an Alaskan Mill years ago, but I can't do that at my age. I'm a retired welder, so I'll fab one up. I thought I would install a roller at the surface on the end of trailer to protect it somewhat. I like yours much better than many I've seen. Great video! I lived north of Susanville, California for years. I saw your video and thought it looked like Highway 395 around Reno?

Nice build, Are fenders not required in your state? Also, you can bolt/weld on outriggers to keep your trailer steady when loading heavy logs.
@sylviaknutcecily4 жыл бұрын
Very nice. I'd be worried about bending that top bar of the 'arch' with too much weight, but maybe 1/4" steel isn't a problem. I just bent my own on a massive log. My next arch will be sturdier if I can't repair my current one. I like some of your other ideas as well, such as the spindles on the bottom. However, I recommend Cremona's idea of the chain notch in the top bar near the center. That's much faster/easier to use than wrapping the chain around the D hook, and I've not had any issues with that method. Good work, and I like the size/sturdiness of the trailer.
@BigNicky774 жыл бұрын
Thank you. You definitely have to build your trailer to match your sawmill. Mine as a max throat of 31 inches, which puts me right around the 3000lb range for logs, for the biggest one. Matt’s sawmill has an opening at 50 inches, so he needs a Much beefier trailer than me because most of his logs exceed 8000 pounds.

Just FYI, you can make or buy a small hand truck type log arch that will move a good size log, and fit into a smaller space than your trailer. That might help you out around your place. Logosol makes one but it wouldn’t be too hard to make one

Thanks for this Nick, nice trailer. Was it very expensive? Have started on mt log loading frame and pleased to see you just used a square frame as has been my intention, although I am putting two 45 degree braces on the top corners. I see some of the DIYer's have trouble with cutting correct angles for the arch, when there is no real need to make it complicated. I am also mounting my winch the conventional way, on the front of the truck, with a removable tow hitch there.

Thank you! I got a killer deal on eBay for the trailer deck, it was a decommissioned large generator trailer. I think I paid $1500 for it.

Very good design or as you admitted, copy. Works like a champ but having worked with steel cable 2 may 3 whole times I think you will find, if you haven't already, a pair of good leather gloves will keep your hands happy. Steel cable cuts fast, painful and often dirty. Just a suggestion, my hand never got tough enough to resist those.

A suggestion. If you have a 2 - 3" pipe to use as a roller it would be less friction between the log and the trailer.
@brucea5505 жыл бұрын
Very little friction loading this way, the log is being lifted on, not winched on. A roller is actually bad, because you lose control of the log a bit that way. The slight friction keeps everything controlled by the winch.
@ucanliv4ever5 жыл бұрын
What if you had 2 rollers in a v configuration?

@@ucanliv4ever then you could use it for a boat trailer... LOL... I thought the same thing, v shaped upright rollers that peg to the deck of the trailer according to need.

Hi Nick can you remember the thickness off the steel you used on the arch its self? yours looks very strong, im going to attempt to convert my trailer Many Thanks
@BigNicky775 жыл бұрын
2.5 square tubing with a 1/4 wall thickness. It is definitely very heavy, but feels safe. I have learned that if you put the chain choker on the end of the log that prevents the arch from slamming down, but I put two old tires on the deck just in case.
@idahopotato67514 жыл бұрын
Shouldn't you chain the log closer to the bar so when it raises it goes more forward on the first pass? You could get it to lay on the trailer on the first pass.

I chain them to a tree and drag them off, dropping the tree onto some six by sixes so I can then roll it over to the mill. If the tree is not round,I remove the mill head and back the trailer over the rails and drag it off a little more carefully. I have some videos I just posted showing that.
