We used to score scribe lines with a chisel. Found it to be much quicker and more accurate with a saw! And we bore our copes out. Open up an entry point and keep that saw wrapped out! Smaller chain...325 and a smaller tip helps reduce kick back. Probably hadn't ought to try it unless you got some time on a saw tho. Carving bars with thin tips have no bark. But they have no sprocket and hard on chain and you get a lot a black on your wood...filings. And heat on your tip. You are the first guy seen on here traces and bores with the saw. Fast, smooth and efficient but you better have some experience to do it...

Practice. You just have to put in the hours.

You are a very skilled chainsaw operator. Most people aren't and so don't plunge cut, but slice out in the way you showed first. Although I was at first slightly irritated at your showing us how you DON'T do it, I came to appreciate how much more shaping there was doing it the "wrong" way. Interesting stuff.

Thank you very much. I have come to understand that there are 'absolute beginners' watching so I wanted to give them an option that requires minimal experience. I will show 'my way' in the next video so that the beginners know that there is an easier way that they can aim for as their skill and experience increases.. Thanks for your comment.

I've not seen your plunge cut approach to the notching before. It's very clearly much faster, and so less fuel, less wear on bar, chain and powerhead. It's also not a beginner's technique, as you say. Having been introduced to the technique, I will be trying it out. I use plunge cuts in felling, so controlling that process is familiar to me. Thank you.

Thanks for your comments, No, the plunge technique is not for beginners. that's why I showed the other method in the previous video. It takes some practice but once you get used to the angles its not that difficult and its really worth putting in the time because its so much more efficient.

Great series of videos, thanks. I'm guessing that the pre-chainsaw method would be similar to the first method you showed too, so people instinctively mirrored that instead of developing a technique more suited to the enhanced abilities of the chainsaw.

Could well be that that is the case.

I put this in because there are beginners out there. It has nothing to do with you being female. Its just about experience. practice makes perfect.

Just curious why not use a plug in electric chainsaw when your working near the shop?
@ProjectHighlander
@ProjectHighlander 2 жыл бұрын
Electric chainsaws have come a long way. they are much better than just a couple of years ago. I have two battery powered saws, one big, one small, one very small plus corded saws, one big, one small. They are great but we are still a long way off from any of them having the power of a real chainsaw.

@@ProjectHighlander ok thanks. Have you ever used pine for building? I don't know the exact species of pine, but I've got acres to use (the kind that leak sap from open wounds if that helps) I'm wondering if I can use it, and how bad would it be to use fresh green wood!
@ProjectHighlander

Yes. Pine is great for building. Don't worry about the sap, that's a sign that its good pine! About green wood....I have answered that one many times....ok. Dry the wood for a couple of years if you have the time and space, but that is rarely the case so most people are building with logs are using green wood. Its fine. It just means you have to take into account the degree to which the wood will shrink as it dries.

@@ProjectHighlander I'm just starting my journey in forestry (and, hopefully, building a log cabin before long) and am wondering if I can get away with just having a battery chainsaw. I don't like the noise and fumes of engines, so I'm willing to make some sacrifices in speed of cutting for a battery chainsaw (I mean, I have a fully electric car for similar reasons). Do you think I can make sacrifices for idealism and stick to batteries, or will it be unworkable and I'll regret it and buy a petrol chainsaw after a few weeks?

@@alaricsnellpym As I said before, the battery saws have got a lot better. If you accept that the work is going to be much much slower then it's absolutely possible. I don't have the patience. I am using my battery saws more and more, for cutting firewood, for instance. But for me it's just too slow for log building.
