ive only just come across you guys on here and am currently watching the cabin build playlist. in all the cabin videos ive watched ive not seen or heard of anything about slippage trim. what a fantastic idea to make sure there is no damage as the cabin settles in. I assume this is because you built with new wood instead of old drier logs? I am in awe of what your doing! I'm a woman in her mid 40s from the UK. born and raised in the very south east of England than moved to Scotland when I turned 40. we brought a temporary home in here in Scotland with the view of buying something remote in a few years, but the housing market isn't and hasn't been in the right place for us to do it yet. my husband started his career in engineering as an apprentice back at the end of the 1970's and is a perfectionist at everything he builds or repairs lol so as you can imagine any home we have had has had his handwork in it somewhere where he has wanted to change and improve things. I can already see that if we buy what we really want it will take a long time for us to get it how we want it, but it will be our dream forever home. I cant wait to carry on with the playlist and then go on to your others. great work as a team! thankyou for sharing this

Hi Tannia. Yes our logs had not dried too much, but they do settle a lot as you build especially when we got 105 degree weather. They also settle quite a bit when you put the roof on due to the extra weight. But log builders usually allow for settling even with dry logs due to compression, just not nearly as much. It is sure nice to have a husband with skills! I’m sure you will enjoy whatever home you decide on😊Thanks so much for watching, I hope you enjoy the rest of the videos 😊💕🌷

The sliding brass plates on the slip trims were wonderfully innovative. Potential for patent there! Loved to see how spot on your log was above the 'french doors' - your attention to detail is fantastic. The testimony to your partnership over the soup and the planed wood was really moving and sincere. Your love for each other is evident and it brings a special charm to the whole process. Thank you for a lovely video.

Your windows and doorsc look awesome!!! I love your live edge slip boards! You may find that the cabin will not settle past the live edges of your slip boards but you got the right idea on constructing them. Just like the pros! Our camp was originally going to be a stick built building until a friend suggested a log cabin instead. I had built buildings before and thought a log cabin would be easier. How wrong I was!!! They are hard but so much more rewarding. If anyone knows the meaning of life it's you two! Great job!

Thank you Donny! We hope it works. The slip trim will have to be cut narrower when it comes too low. And the front door trim will have to be modified a little after it settles some. The top came out on a weird place on the log. 😂😂it is definitely a learning experience. 👍

How long do give the cabin to shrink down . And if it stops shrinking and you still have a gap do you change the top trim piece. Nice job you and Cinda should be proud of what you made.
@natureartgirl2 жыл бұрын
We are not really sure how long it will take. It has shrunk about an inch from the time we got the last wall log up. So I am sure it shrank a little as we were building. I think it depends on how big the diameter of the logs are and the humidity level. We are usually very humid here, but the 100+ degree weather we had really made a difference. I have heard it can take a couple years. You don’t really have to change the trim even if there is a gap since it is completely sealed. That’s why we liked the decorative aspect of the live edge. Really better to leave it because wood can still expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes. But, might be good to ask someone who has long term experience, we haven’t ever lived in a real log cabin yet😂

@natureartgirl2 жыл бұрын
We are not sure yet. Plan is to enclose the bottom with galvanized roofing and possibly spray foam the metal. We really are afraid to put insulation right up against the floor joist logs until they have had plenty of time to dry completely. It is very humid here and afraid they might rot. It doesn’t get super cold here and a friend of ours did the spray foam /metal and hasn’t had any issues.

Only thing I've thought of is just build your trim and casing to the window and let the logs slide behind it.
@natureartgirl2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you could do that if you cut flats above the window. It is tricky though, because logs are round and they don’t always come out in a place where that will work. It is all going to be custom for each window no matter how you do it. 😊👍
