No, you have to make the rock travel into your window through fence posts, guided by flowing water that you have placed on top of ice. You also need to have atleast 2rocks stacked in eachother.

Eventually, in real life, it will take longer than the age of the universe before the rock can pass cleanly through the window, but it is possible. Look it up. Science.

With the exception of the two blocks aside the second fence, you can actually use any block for the elevator, even stone. You just wouldn't be able to see the items move. This is useful if you don't want to use all glass in areas you couldn't even view. Btw, it works because the game doesn't want entities inside blocks. It assumes if you go high enough you'll eventually find air, so it moves the item up, looks for air in 3x3x3 area, and if none found moves item up again. Eventually the item will hit air, after al the build limit is air above.

Just one little thing I should correct you on: You said the items travel up through the glass because glass is transparent. Technically, items can travel up through any solid block, like iron blocks. So I think if you covered the bottom layer with iron instead of glass, you wouldn't see any water or the fences, and it would look a lot cleaner. Great video!

+Max Koopmans FYI. It doesn't need to be glass. You just wouldn't see it otherwise. The two glass beside the second fence does have to be transparent still. I use this with alternating glass and stone to move items up. Glass only where I can see it.

When I tested it, the speed is about hte same, and the lost/move of objects was the same. I setup a bedrock to build limit test and they seemed to be about the same to me (except in the snapshot I was testing it in, the glass seemed to keep losing the items out the sides, and the stone wasn't.

Just a technical point: this elevator also works with solid blocks. It is not true that the items go through glass because it's transparent, items will travel through any block. Glass does have better aesthetics though because one can see the items go through which looks cool.

I wonder if this could be modified into a sort of "perpetual item motion" machine. Replace the lava at the top with more flowing water that pushes the items into hoppers, which then funnels them back down into the dropper. Would be purely decorative, of course, but it could be neat.

+GeekInABox Wouldn't the item despawn timer reset every time they get sucked into the hoppers though? Or does it just freeze the timer, then resume it upon spitting it back out? I'm not intimately familiar with the actual coding of the game in these regards.

As of 1.8.9, if you build the trashcan, the items will flow up until they get above the ground and then will shoot out the back, however, this can be remedied by attaching a back wall to the machine, so essentially just like what's in the video but add a wall of solid blocks behind the far wall.

You could use the same mechanic for minecraft portal maps. Make a texture pack to make a certain block look like a cube and bam you have cube tunnels :D

You could use this as a new crusher mechanic using the slime blocks push the slime blocks into a bunch of items and they flow up to the lava
