I had some of those new plastic wedges. I liked my wooden wedges, and for the heavy trees, the alloy wedges with the ring were my go-to. Do they still sell wooden and alloy wedges?

My father-in-law and I cut wood for 25 years in the mountains of Colorado where doug fir or spruce was as good as it gets. Lots of pine and aspen. I loved it but didn't realize it at the time as we both heated with wood. I can smell it.

For three winters, I cut trees along the shoreline of a lake. Cutting shoreline trees is always a challenge. Often, the trees would land on the ice. I have seen big ashes and yellow birches break through 18" of February ice. When that happens, you have to race to get as much of the branches outbox thev ater as you can before everything refreezes. Cutting along a stream like he is doing here, you have to keep your wits about you. There will be places where the midwinter ice can be too thin to hold a man. We did the bulk of our woodcutting in the New Hampshire winters.
