But when I go to a gig, I use a separate drive, slower and cheaper (in case it walks away). I want to be able to point LP to the new library, and then back again when I return home. @DavidRavenMoon Жыл бұрын
If a user decides to save projects as folders instead of packages, be very mindful of file and folder organization. Always make a new folder in your Logic directory for the new project. Save your folders in there. If you don’t do that you run the risk of over writing files. I’ve been hired to help mix projects and the client had everything co mingled in folder on an external drive. Every Logic project we opened had missing audio files. This was most likely because a newer file with the same name over wrote the older file. Or they were saved in the wrong location. There were a lot of other folders on the drive. It was a mess. This can’t happen if you save as a package. If you feel you need to manually manipulate audio files in the project, Logic has a file browser. You can even use the browser to import parts of other Logic sessions, including channel strip settings. Or you can right click and choose show package contents. I’ve never found a reason to do that. It also makes sharing projects easier, which I do often when collaborating with other musicians.
@BeBoMaMu Жыл бұрын
people don’t save as package?
@DavidRavenMoon Жыл бұрын
@@BeBoMaMu Some people are very adamant about saving as folders. They seem to feel it gives them more control over their files. These same people directly interact with the audio files in that project folder instead of using Logic's file browser, because they don't know how to use all the features in Logic. These are the same people who don't like iTunes organize folders and have to find the folder/album/song in the finder to play it. lol 🤷🏻♀️

In part 5 of this series, I talk about different ways to save your Logic projects. Including when you "Save As" a project for the first time, you a turn off the content that is copied into your project. Typically if you are working on just one computer, and you have external sample libraries, there is no need to save the samples, as it wastes drive space and creates duplicates, as you've mentioned. Is it just to save the 30 TB from being installed on the host machine or are there other reasons, like for better performance when using the program? Thanks

If you have 1TB of internal space I would say an external drive is unnecessary. Unless you plan on installing other 3rd party sample libraries.

The sole benefit these days is just saving drive space. Back in the day you could make the argument that separating your sample library on a separate drive helped with loading times, but these days these new Mac’s are so fast it doesn’t really matter.

What type of transfer speeds does your external HD or should you go SSD ? Thanks
@MusicTechHelpGuy Жыл бұрын
For my sound library I'm actually just using a USB 3, 7200 rpm mechanical drive, and it seems to work fine for loading up software instrument libraries and such. An SSD will certainly be faster, but really any drive should work for the sound library as long as it is formatted Mac OS Journaled or APFS. The sound library samples and such are typically loaded into RAM before you use them, so it's okay if the drive they are stored on isn't the fastest.

Hi,, and thanks so much for this video (I'll be watching your other ones too). I'm going to be doing the free trial for Logic so I haven't downloaded/installed it yet, but I do have questions about moving the sound library to an external drive and if this would affect Garageband (10.4.7 on Ventura 13.1). If I move the Logic sound library to an external SSD, will this affect the Garageband sound library, or are the sound libraries independent? And, looking ahead, after the free trial is over and I decide that I want to go back to using Garageband, will I need to make any modifications to Garageband to use it as before? I've tried researching this online, and I can't find an answer to these. If I knew that Logic's and Garageband's sound libraries are independent, I wouldn't be asking these questions in the first place. If this is addressed in the remarks below, I'm sorry; I just didn't sift through everything (there's a lot here!). Thanks.

amazing as always, but now I'm trying to better understand how to call up pianos and other sounds from the library. can you point me to a library tutorial? - I open a new empty project - choose software instrument if I don't choose "empty channel strip" from the instrument menu I end up with alchemy. the problem is that my library is then limited to showing only alchemy sounds and things get messy when I switch to say a piano. the piano I'm guessing lives in the sampler, but I can't even find it when I choose the sampler instrument. I end up deleting the track and starting over - or I choose "no plugin" from the channel strip which then reloads my library with all my sounds, rather than just the alchemy sounds. the whole time my library says "all sounds" but it actually only includes the sounds from the instrument that's loaded ie Alchemy. I think this deserves a video if you haven't already done one on the library. I can get around kinda, but: how do I get the library to simply show me all the sounds (so I can actually use it like a library)? I want to be able to open the library and choose piano even when I'm using another instrument on my channel strip. or tell me a better way to see all the available sounds... help Help Guy! you're my only hope. thanks!

@@gianni1646 The loop library stays in the same place in terms of the Logic interface. You're accessing them from the loop library, they are just located externally. Same goes for the sample libraries in the software instruments. When you relocate the library, you can continue to use Logic just as you have done before, you just have to make sure the external drive is connected and turned on.

Since I bought a Mac Mini Pro 2 and transferred all the information from the previous computer, i Mac, to the new computer My loop browser is completely empty! By empty, I don't mean grayed out, i mean completely empty, there is no mention of any loop. Besides that, my logic works as usual and so do the other programs on the computer. I already tried the actions: "riendex all loops" and "reinstall sound library". And it didn't help. It is important to note that in the folder called the library on the computer when I enter the audio library there is a folder called "Apple Loops" and in it are all the loops that I am pretty sure should appear in the loops browser. In the same main library folder are also all the plug-ins, effects and midi sounds that the software does recognize and I use them on a regular basis. I couldn't find any reference to this kind of problem on the web, forums and Apple support site. It's really frustrating. Does this problem sound familiar to you? Relocate, it was not clear if logic moves everything from one location to another, does it redownload everything from the web and we then have to delete the previous location's content? Does it do like Native instrument, just assigne the sounds to a new location, or really physically 'move' from one place to another? And so we dont have to do it because Logic does that? That is strange that Logic would act as a computer and physically move the content to an external drive, I have a hard time picturing this. Does it moves them from one place to the other so you dont have to delete them from the older location...? Thanks
