In this video, I demonstrate various hardware options for headphone monitoring for tracking, how to set up headphone cue mixes in Logic Pro, how to use Sends on Faders to create cue mixes, and how to set up a Talkback Mic without any additional hardware. Thank you for another fantastic video! This contribution is not just for this video... you are my go-to source for Logic Pro information in general.Your ability explain things in a way that makes the information easy to understand is a gift... thank you for sharing that gift with us, and please keep up the great work

I truly appreciate your videos. They're a really terrific introduction/course to a fairly intimidating piece of software, especially for those of us who have spent little time in a control room, being generally on the other side of the glass. I do have one suggestion to add to this episode: You might stress that in order to set up Separate Headphone Mixes in your DAW, your interface MUST have Duel (or more) outputs with Individual Busses. Yes, you can add an inexpensive headphone amplifier under most any circumstance, but it will be impossible to provide separate headphone mixes to your studio/performer duo unless your interface is equipped to allow for duel bussing. (And those are generally on the more expensive side of your entry-level interface options.) Thanks again, and please keep em coming!

Just a note on the talkback mic. If you want to be sure and protect your studio monitors from feedback, setting the output on the talkback mic channel from 'Stereo Out' to 'none' (Anything but your monitor mix outputs really) will ensure that your talkback only goes to the headphones. As an aside, muting this channel will also act as a 'talkback on/off' if you have a lot of headphone mixes and save you loads of clicking to enable/disable talkback.

That’s was exactly what I was wondering as I was watching this. “why not just select no output” for the TB aux channel and then also using the TB mute button rather than turning on/off the sends?” So thanks for confirming that! One more thing I’m wondering is if I set up the artist with logic remote on Ipad to run their own headphone mix, can the Ipad display sends on faders mix independently of logic on my computer? or will SoF flip both mixer views at the same time?

This video is fantastic. I was just getting ready to start a search for how to setup a Cue mix in Logic Pro 11 and it showed up. Easy to follow and well thought out. I am getting ready to do my first recording in Logic Pro....long time Cubase Pro user, and I couldn't figure out the Cue. Thanks for the assist.

Great video. Quite a tricky concept and process explained extremely clearly without being at all overwhelming.

Good video. I feel you left out a critical step to protect the musicians with headphones. Add a brick-wall limiter on any channel output that is sending a signal to headphones to prevent accidental loud signals. Also adding a high ratio compressor for the talkback channel to level out the mic and prevent uncomfortable loud noises. In my booth the artists have a device that allows them to adjust their headphones level as well as a hardwired limiter to protect their ears. Prost!

Thanks so much. I use an XR18 for my interface. Does a pretty good job. And it has 6 auxiliary outputs which I use for headphone mixes. It’s great and seperate from the DAW.

Nice one. I'm comfortable with ProTools and do all this sort of stuff in PT but was not sure that Logic could do a similar thing - always assumed the tiny send knobs would be fiddly. With the Logic talkback channel you use the channel mute button to turn TB on and off for all sends in one step. Seems to work with the sends in pre-fader mode (doesn't work like that in PT). I use a cheap midi controller to do this, don't use its other 7 channels at all! Also, you could set TB channel to 'no output' to eliminate any possibility of feedback.

Great video. Love the gold faders - I'm new and never seen that feature before - so good! How would you add a plugin, e.g. compressor, to the vocal track so that only the vocalist can hear it, to give more confidence in the performance recording?

👍🏻👍🏻 Both thumbs up, incredibly interesting, didn‘t know anything about this. Thanks so much! Watching this I found out there is no 32 IO Buffer size setting possibility (only 64) in my Logic audio settings. Is the reason for that my only 16 GB of RAM on my Mac Mini M2 Pro, or what else? 💪🏻 video!

Is it possible to have each stereo cue have different panning from the main mix pan settings? Great video and perfect timing for me!
@PapaGrowsFunk

I discovered the answer to my question. To control stereo sends independently, select "Independent Pan" in the Send pull down menu which is the same pull down menu as pre fader and post fader.

Hey thank you so much for this video. In a future video could you adress exporting stems with a 2 bus in logic? Is there some advanced sidechain i have to do to the 2 bus with a spare aux? Or how would you go about it?

Would it be possible to set up the talkback in logic so your talkback channel's output is not going anywhere and use the sends post fader so that you can use the mute button on the TB channel as your talk button?

Josh, quick question…. Is there a keyboard “skin” that has the Logic Pro keyboard shortcuts that you’d recommend? Or is there a better way to familiarize myself with the keyboard shirtcuts? Thanks, man. I appreciate these videos.

I'm not aware of any keyboard skins, but there is a Logic keyboard from ASTRA. I reviewed the older version of this keyboard a while back. They're a little pricey, and not exactly pretty looking, but they get the job done. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Astra2MLg--logickeyboard-astra-2-mac-backlit-keyboard-apple-logic-pro-by

Try checking out the Velocity Processor MIDI FX. You can create velocity response curves to make lower velocities higher, or even compress the velocity levels. I did a video on that earlier this year. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIXOgox4eKiYfassi=iCdsknpwQsvu0l5_

Great job Mackie, to save a few cents you just made that monitor 50% less useful than a 100% useful box 😂

Yep! I would rather Mackie make an HM-3 with 3 headphones outs, but two TRS L/R inputs, then have a single stereo TRS input.

Unfortunately KZbin doesn’t pay the bills. If I didn’t have sponsors you wouldn’t see as many free videos, and courses like this would be pay for only. However, I do leave chapters in every video now with the sponsor segment clearly labeled, so feel free to skip them. This one was more integrated since I already use their product, but in other videos the sponsor is clearly marked in the chapters and I try to keep the ads below 1 minute. Also keep in mind a video like this takes about 10 hours of work to make.
