Does it work the same for 3rd party instruments. Specifically, I'm using instruments from Kontakt 7 and I did the modulating just like you did in logic pro interface but it doesn't appear to actually be doing anythin

It should if the effects are inserted within the signal chain. Effects are processed from “top to bottom” on each channel when looking at the channels on the mixer window, regardless if they are audio tracks or software instruments. If you placed these effects on a separate bus channel, take note if the instrument channels are sending an adequate amount of volume to the effect bus, and make sure the effect bus is being sent to your master or stereo out.
