I once watched an interview with Frank Wang, the CEO and founder of DJI. He said that when they were developing a new generation of phantom drones, they wanted to cooperate with GOPRO. However, the CEO of GOPRO requested that DJI develop and produce drones, GOPRO only provides their cameras. However, for the profits of the entire drone, GOPRO will get 70% and DJI 30%. DJI considered this an insult to them and gave up the cooperation with GOPRO and produced its own cameras. From then on, because of GOPRO's rudeness and arrogance, GOPRO lost one partner and got one more competitor.

Completely agree. What the company needs right now is NEW LEADERSHIP. They need someone who understands how to build the business over the long-term. Any exec who would pay themselves that much money without any regard for the performance metrics is NOT someone who is stable over the long-term. The product is good. The expansions were not actually all that ill-advised; aside from them moving far too rapidly in trying to expand. Without new leadership, the company will likely see a return to poor practices and eventually be purchased by one of the major drone manufacturers.

Overpriced? They’re insanely cheap for a high quality waterproof camera with good stabilization. An iPhone costs 1000 dollars and people buy those for their cameras, and my A7iii kit cost me almost $4000 so I would say GoPros are very cheap.
@relo9992 жыл бұрын
@@WestonNey For the market they're targeting and compared to their competition? They're are easily the most expensive mainstream action camera brand. IPhone is also way overpriced, considering phones with comparable specs from other brands go for less than half the price, and the Iphone also isn't just a camera nor would you strap it onto a drone or mountainbike with a good risk it will break. Using a A7III is an even poorer example considering it's market and usage. While goPro are the best general purpose action cams, their competition generally isn't much worse but at less than half the price. (also doesn't help that GoPro started making their camera's more breakable, bigger and heavier in recent years. The last 2 probably only a big issue in my hobby or FPV Freestyle drone flying where ever few grams and wind resistance count)

@@relo999 - It's the possible return on investment that keeps the prices "expensive". I've never liked that fact that keyboards and synthesizers cost so much money. I purchased a Korg M1 back in 1990 and it ran me $2500. But the difference between me and gigging musicians, they could invest that kind of money and maybe make that money back in a year of gigging. I was merely a hobby musician. The same holds for GoPro and KZbin content creators.
@relo9992 жыл бұрын
@@thespadestable Certainly, but the difference is marketing. Korg ain't marketing their 1k+ synths to the average consumer or hobbyists it's marketing it to people with a job that requires such device. GroPro however doesn't market it to youtube content creators, it market it to action sports enthusiasts and to a lesser extend the holiday goer. And well, that marketing doesn't remotely line up with the price considering for a lot of sports the price roughly lines up with the cost of the sport equipment needed to practice said sport. And it's quite far removed from the holiday goer pricing. Especially for a device that runs a high risk of damage. And well, for the price gopro asks there are far better camera's for youtube creators.

They release a new camera every year, and every year it’s the same dilemma; buggy firmware, battery and overheating issues. It takes roughly half a year, and they start to get everything solved. If you bought a brand new car and got a 10 percent discount on it, but it failed to get you to work about 30 percent of the time, would you still be pleased with your purchase if the dealer didn't fix the problems? It render color well, when it works, some of the custom features are awesome, but when you lose a third of your shots to glitch bullshit and have only an hour of batter life, it's not even consumer level quality. Commercially it is a failure. DJ Osmocam isn't stellar, but it's reliable. It doesn't fail to start, doesn't fail to save, in the commercial world those aren't just priorities, those are "I got paid" vs "I did not get paid". Just remember that Leica shits on the rest when it comes to camera lens quality this is the reason why Leica will be potential to Samsung to challenge Sony on the mirrorless camera market and probably adding Leica technology on GoPro if Samsung where to acquire GoPro after Samsung acquires Leica.

This is a marketing technique if a seller thinks a potential buyer would be unlikely to complete the purchase. A huge number of consumers will put the item in their basket, get to checkout ... and get cold feet, never completing the purchase. The email marketing campaign isn't trying to sell you a one off product. That's too hit or miss. From a huge mailshot you'd get only a few sales. It's about creating demand: people want more what they cannot have, and they'll tell others if they can't get what they want. Perception of scarcity drives up demand. I've been saying this for years: GoPro thrived in spite of Nick, not because of him. The smartphone market made GoPros redundant in all but the most extreme environments. In those extreme environments GoPros are still better than most other action cameras (I've used them all). What they need is a larger sensor. Insta360 has a 1in sensor module, and the image quality, especially in low light, is miles ahead. The only problem with Insta360 is that they don't listen to their customers. I've told them many times they need to decrease the minimum focusing distance of their 1in module (90cm / 35in makes (moto)vlogging impossible) and they also need to streamline their software, but they don't care. If GoPro puts a 1in sensor on their cameras with a ~50cm (20in) minimum focusing distance - it's not that hard, some smartphones are already doing it - they'd have the perfect action camera that would also double as a great vlogging and family camera. That's the way to get back on top.

As long as they don't sit on their laurels without bringing out a new product to compete against the tiny but competent new offerings from other companies, GoPro will have a successful comeback. Their IP and product name would be bought up by a white knight before they actually went bankrupt and their tech turned into a bunch of chinese knockoffs emboldened by the lack of the GoPro company competing with them. But that new cam better be less clunky than all their past offerings. It's nice to have a fat blocky package to hold in my hands, but I think the true core of the cam can be squeezed down into a much smaller unit. This unit can then be the module that plugs into the bigger clunky housing we know of today, or fastened into other GoPro packages for different purposes such as underwater scuba (60meter), water resistant (5meter), or eventually to drone-compatible housings.

This is Nick's great learning curve. As a former GoPro customer (I purchased a Hero 8 Black), the company is one which has pulled many cynical marketing moves on its customers. I am particularily critical of the company's level and quality of after sales service and tech support. As a motovlogger, this is extremely painful. I’ve started using Insta360 gear. I still use GoPro devices, but unless they start improving the fundamentals, software, reliability, and simple features like external mics with waterproof support, and better partnerships, I’ll continue to move away from them. The ball is completely in their court as the dominant leader. However, dominant leaders are usually too complacent and unwilling to cannibalize their sales with new innovations. This is usually why very few of the fortune 100 companies are still around 50 years past their dominance.
@awebuser59142 жыл бұрын
It's painfully obvious... With respect to most video/photo equipment, for the typically long ownership period, it's more than "good enough" for whatever the use-case may be and there's ZERO compelling reason(s) to upgrade endlessly, like cellphones. With this in mind, it's very easy to saturate the fairly limited market for "action" cameras. The shift in the 4/5 series to a waterproof camera itself was significant and drove higher than average sales, but again, the incremental changes from 5-9 are not compelling enough for a typical owner to upgrade, so you're right back where you started. GoPro was wildly overvalued, even at the IPO level; they were making commodity devices that could easily be copied or competed with and had zero ability to generate revenue after the sale.

Considering they’re the best selling cameras of all time and they’re still making record breaking sales and profits with the latest versions that doesn’t really make much sense.
@RudyLukman2 жыл бұрын
Nah. many would upgrade constantly. The problem is they're not as reliable after hero 5 onwards. Freezing. SD card compatibility issues. Overheating. Etc. Sony has better reliability. Wouldn't want to hit record and later find out it actually frozed 5 seconds in. And they didn't fix that problem with the hero 10 and it has been happening since hero 6
@awebuser59142 жыл бұрын
@@RudyLukman Who "many"? I think you're wildly overestimating the general market use. GoPros are certainly used by "pros", but the majority are weekend warriors, etc. who just use it as a generic "camera" and that's about it and as long as it shows their adventures nicely, job done.

The ability for an average phone nowadays to take almost the same quality video - and that the phone is almost always on hand means the need for a goPro video is limited to extreme sports/water use/etc. A more limited market. I think they will "plod" along and make a descent bit of coin though. One thing that has struck me is that I used to hear about them all the time - now I never hear about them in casual conversation. I loved my original GoPro Hero and Hero 2, and jumped to Hero 4 as soon as it was released. After that, GoPro started lacking behind the competition (at least camera features-wise). Since then I switched to a Garmin Virb Ultra action cam, and noticed that it took GoPro 2-3 years to catch up with Garmin's features. For a company with so much dedication to the action cameras' field, and aggressive marketing with annual models release. GoPro is definitely not a leader in the field anymore. I have owned quite a few GoPros over the years, and one thing remains the same: They make probably the best action cameras in existence, and not only that, they just keep getting better and better each year. In fact, the only reason why I buy a new one every few years is because its simply better than the old version in terms of image quality, stabilization, and other various features. They make great cameras and innovate, and thats exactly what they need to keep doing. It completely boggles my mind that they even went public in the first place, and then tried to expand as hard as they did. I've started filming with a go pro recently, hero 8 black actually. I get very similar results with a pixel 6. the pixel 6 overheats much faster, doesn't have a SD card slot so being limited to 128gb makes the pixel 6 not ideal if shooting in 4k. I must say the go pro seems overly controlling with non oem batteries, and a bit locked down and limited on some features timestamp comes to mind videos in play back don't start at 00:00 on the black. kind of a annoyance. go pro syncing and Mac is slow and no longer officially supported. took a bit to figure out it needed permissions in Catalina, most apps tell you what it needs but go pro required dragging the app into nearly every permission and allowing. camera freezes all the time with the latest update. the hero 10 isn't much different and I had better expectations from the 8 as being a polished product. switching USB modes is buggy requiring a restart after a change without saying so, if not it'll freeze with USB connected until you not just restart but follow the exact process of restarting after changing the USB mode. adding a external mic seems a bit overly dependent on a GoPro brand dac, any cell phone USB c dac I've tried seems to not work. I think gopro has let the customers down, new Samsung phones record in 8k. I'm not asking for 16k but 8k can make a nice video to generate a 4k video giving additional crop or kens burns effect without quality loss. I know the 1080 vs 4k quality is nearly identical I just expected gopro 10 to beat any cell phone.

At the IPO, they were valued like a tech company, and they are a camera company. Big missteps, like trying to sell drones and launch a streaming TV service, were about trying to chase those valuations and frame the company as a growth stock. What they do well is making durable, waterproof cameras for people who do outdoor/adventure activities and who create content for platforms like KZbin. Their market is stable at best and probably shrinking, as smartphone cameras improve to fill their role for most casual users, and their products are a victim of their own success, because, as the cameras improve - and the recent ones are really nice - it is harder to add useful new features or improve functionality to get existing owners to buy the newest camera.

Customers have been screaming about the overheating, shutting down, and unresponsive touchscreen issues for YEARS, and GoPro plays deaf. Went to DJI, and never looked back. GoPro would have so much potential even in the current competitive market, but their arrogance and poor execution are making it really easy for the competitors to leave them behind. DJI made a camera that JUST WORKS...at half the price...and they've sold a freighter full.

If only they start to listen what the customer wants, learn the lesson from customer feedback and improve from there. New development is not cheap and a big load of risk. Chinese copycats cannot make the same stabilization as smooth as GoPro did.

GoPro needs to crack how to broadcast live action cam footage from bike races. That's the only thing you can't get a camera live at the Tour de France. All of the action cam footages at pro peloton is recorded to disk and can only be viewed after the race is finished.

I thought this would've been the rational conclusion for GoPro: drones. Does DJI plan working on AI-tracking self-flying drones, or one connected to a satellite internet for control? I think that's the next step.

Yep, so many bugs are fixed by formatting the sd card, something you usually don't wanna do at the field. It is so weird, sometimes it doesn't start recording, sometimes it randomly stops recording, sometimes smacking it the tiniest bit stops recording, sometimes the footage is corrupted. All fixed by formatting the sd card. Fucking why. I bought a 128 gb sd card for the exact reason of having to do this less. Also sometimes it places files randomly in the sd card contents that you have literally never touched, so finding the files is also a massive pain. Aaaaand not to mention all the times that it randomly doesn't feel like turning on, and needs to be reset or the times when the battery has mysteriously drained itself fron full charge overnight. Feels pretty unacceptable in a product that costs ~400$ and is advertised to be durable and reliable. Lost some of my best flight footage to this shit happening, which really sucks

I bought a GoPro when I was younger. The 2 biggest criticisms was the horrendous battery life, about 2 hours and the footage I got was very slow and boring compared to what you see in the adverts, you could never get the same exciting footage. I soon binned it.

I have had Gopro 3 and 7 black editions. And it is incredible engineering they have. Best parts are black edition profeesional level crystal clear image and the robustness of it. I have used them on windsurfing and snowboarding gears since 2014 and none have broken down. Windsurfing have had mast-against the board slams and the camera just survives :). The new image stabilization tech since model 7 and especially on model 10 Black are super upgrades, especially in those sports where visual vibration is biggest issue. I once opened Gopro 3 body out of curiosity, since I am mechanical engineer myself, and noticed that its internal construction is bit similar to helicopter avionics design. You dont see that kind of shock-vibration resistant design in consumer electronics, even if you buy a supercar and open up its electronics ;)

These videos always leave out the very important part that shareholders play in the whole saga. It's all about 'growth' in publicly traded companies and GoPro ventured out into drones and other areas because they were chasing growth to keep shareholders happy. As backward as it sounds if you don't produce growth with your company ( even if you're profitable) then shareholders can become unhappy and either sell off their shares ( therefore removing the companies working capital) or work to replace management. I'm not saying the guy didn't make a bunch of mistakes but a lot of companies chase the dream of keeping stockholders happy and fail and it is almost certainly a very important part of this tale. Also competition from other companies and new technologies didn't help their cause but they will never last if that just cut jobs and keep selling cameras instead of making new products and services to sell. Profit without growth might be fine for a private company but it won't last in the world of a publicly traded company.
@Tie5092 жыл бұрын
Paying yourself double the profit of the entire company is not a "mistake". It is willful negligence. "Donating" 500 million dollars to help your personal bottom line at the expense of common shareholders is not a "mistake". It is willful negligence. Dumping shares the minute you have a chance is an indictment on the state of the company and what he knew was coming ahead of the average investors. Blaming that on investors looking for "growth" is obtuse.

While they are chasing the quality product segment, the main thing to focus on is compability, gimbals and attach points to different devices and drones. Collaboration with drone companies like DJI. Collaboration with software developers that make video editing software, etc. You don't have to make everything yourself. Just make the damn thing compatible and visible so that people feel elite status and then offer also some kind of bonus like a 6/12 month free subscription to aftereffects or something. You can earn from the subscription campaigns (since people continue to pay to Adobe if they are used to the software) and they also buy your every new toy to keep the free subscriptions. Car cameras are out of their price range. Its a stupid idea to pursue, car companies make their own cameras. Its quite easy to get hold of camera modules. The idea of a GoPro is not to make any camera, its about making a durable camera case that can be attached to anything fast and secure. Cars need fixed cameras hidden behind the window.

I own 23 GoPros and pre-Covid was using them for Concert Video work along with other cameras. Fantastic products, but I saw their HUGE mis-steps when they entered the Music Industry. They were too busy trying to be cool rather than educating customers on how to get the most out of the products. If they had of educated correctly they would have exploded in the music world. It was sad to see them topple from the perch they once sat on. That said, I still use and love GoPro cameras.

@@LogicallyAnswered I have been saying for a while now that Tesla will be the GoPro of EV.....two companies where investors mistook a first mover for lasting first-mover advantage. The real story of GoPro's downfall that you missed is competition....they simply weren't playing in a market that produces monopolies. Auto is the same - there is no 'winner takes all' like Tesla fans think is occurring. It will be a case of fighting for every sale against many very good, very experienced rivals (plus a bunch of clever upstarts). This story will play out very similarly to GoPro, and Tesla will be just another cautionary tale for the next generation of investors.

@@imanuel8883 The EV is also for a specific type of person. It's not exactly a vehicle that travels very far, and every stop adds like 1 - 4 hrs to your trip depending on your charging package. It's mostly a city car. It's also not luxury like Mercedes or BMW in foreign countries. In EV, it's one of the only good options, so like the gopro, it's got the first step advantage, but the innovation that comes later and then consumer preference, it's going to be highly split up as time goes on. Once they start releasing cars like the BMW i8 for $80k as a revamped BMW M3 or something (just throwing a nice EV for an affordable luxury price) and the same specs as Tesla, you're going to start seeing everyone start crowding their personal brands again. 5 years, Tesla will most likely start losing it's edge as others catch up and are able to actually compete. Imagine a 1 or 2 second AMG Mercedes with 400 - 500 mile driving distance, and a multi-compatible charging port. Tesla's will have to get even more premium on their exterior and interior to differentiate themselves from the market.
