I'm an electronics tech and have been doing these sort of repairs for 20 years. My G9x keeps losing power mid use so I know it's the power/USB cord. I just needed a video to show me how to take apart the mouse without damaging anything. This is a well made/edited video from beginning to end. Thanks. Anyways, I took my mouse apart and I can see damage to the wires where the grommet is. I don't have a soldering station at home, I'll have to fix the wiring issue next time I'm at work.

Just used your video to clean the mouse wheel after 6 years of use...good as new, thank you! Very tricky (if your a fumbles like me) to put back the whole wheel assembly. I actually had to take the wheel itself out of its plastic holder to clean out the grime underneath. Altogether 45 minutes. Saved myself some cash, but the satisfaction of fixing something that is still good is invaluable :)

No idea if you are still active on here friend, but I just wanted to say a big thanks. This video was super helpful in me fixing my favourite old mouse! I bought the G9x back in '08/'09 and have yet to have a more comfortable mouse. It stopped working years ago (couldn't stay powered), but I found it recently and decided to try fixing. As soon as I opened up the end of the rubber wrapping on the wire, the wiring just crumbled like dust and fell apart in my hand! I lost a good 2-3cm off the black wire. Twisting these together and soldering was enough to fix the issues. Your guide was essentially for the fast and easy assembly/disassembly. Thanks!
@evohicks112 жыл бұрын
Well I took the old G9 apart knowing I didn't have most of the stuff needed to do the repair. In the end I just wound the two black wires together and covered them tightly with insulation tape until I can get hold of a soldering iron, put it back together snd it works like a dream. Will use this while I wait for the replacement to arrive. Thanks again for the video.

Thanks for this excellent take-apart video! I just resurrected my G9 with its help. I did not mess with the cable itself though - cheap cables for these things are all over Ebay. My mouse had suffered the tender attentions of my toddler son - when daddy would forget to push it well back, he'd yank it off the table, chew on it, chew on the cable, yank on it HARD (happily chortling ) when daddy would try to take it back. The mouse surprisingly made it through a couple months of this abuse before starting to intermittantly disconnect from the USB. I might take the cable apart, just for yuks, to see what exactly happened to it.

Thank you - this video was insanely helpful for repairing a shorted g9. As a public service announcement for others, if you find your mouse constantly scrolls up or down after reassembly, you may have over tightened the screws that hold down the mouse wheel. I had to futz with the screws to find the right tightness (if too loose the wheel won't register clicks consistently).
@aeew9 жыл бұрын
You saved my mouse! I had a problem with my right click switch, but I had no idea how to disassemble my mouse or even where the screws were. Now it's in perfect shape! all i need to do is wait for the glue on my front teflon foot to dry, and we're good.

I had to RMA my first mouse since I was using it on a painted wood surface and the tracking became worse and worse. My second mouse has fallen a lot and the wheel broke, it was also shorting by the USB cable side. This video helped me put the wheel and cable from my first mouse into the second mouse. Not the intended purpose of the video, but you saved me a ton of time, showed me it was actually possible, and saved me $50. Thanks so much!

I actually needed to repair my mouse wheel assembly and this video just worked fine for getting me there. Thank you very much! Regarding the ribbon... it's actually two pieces, so nothing is breaking as fpsDREDD assumed. It's the ribbon connector cable, you put that in first and then you slide in the little black cap that tightens it in. It's the most PITA part of the process but works once you figure it out.

I currently have the same mouse for the past three years (turning four this Nov 2013 lol). I had scrolling issues, it wont scroll anymore... thanks to this vid I was able to tear the mouse down to pieces, cleaned the scroll and viola, the scrolling works as new :D Thanks!

The mouse was 80 dollars new. I got the broken one for 15. Based on the symptoms he described in his auction, and based on the frequent reports of shorted cables on these mice, there was a high probability that I would be able to easily fix the mouse and save 45 dollars. Plus, fixing things is fun. I paid fifteen dollars to do something I think is fun. People often pay for entertainment. If the result of that entrainment happens to be I get a mouse I wanted anyway, great!

great vid, i recently had the base of my cable getting really flimsy and "stubborn" since the cloth stiffened up except for the very base of the cable...so i got a replacement as well as some hyperglide feet...best decision ive ever made the avago 9500 is my fave sensor ever "latent acceleration" included. My friend has a sensei raw and we both vouch that the avago 9500 is hands down the best fps sensor weve come across playing cs for 10+years. I was willing to do anything to keep my g9x going. I got a g700s but its more of a mmo/moba/rpg mouse to me i couldnt hang playing fps games with it. Im glad i saw this vid and knew how to remove the ribbon/pcb from the mouse base so that i could rout the cable correctly....i saw some people complaining about not being able to click...i knew that was operator error. My cable looked like yours exposed and i think its why it was getting flimsy the housing/shrink wrap was migrating. So glad its running 100% a ok. Avago 9500 or nothing for me im currently running 1oz of weights 28g total. I love it its heavy but the added weight works perfectly as a friction anchor on my 9hd hard pad+the hyperglides. Some people dont understand the effect "weight" has on friction and how effective it can really be for tracking.
@lee0sensei11 жыл бұрын
I came here to say the same: thanks for your video. I didn't think that the screws were behind the glide pads. I was having the same scroll problem, cleaning it helped to make it work again. It seems that the rubber of the wheel is tearing down so I have to be careful when using it. Again, thanks!

I've had to do this repair on many of my previous mice from logitech so i knew what to do before seeing this handy step by step guide, but whilst i had this mouse open i purposely bent the spring that gives the wheel the "click" to be stronger so it now gives a much more satisfying click than the factory standard.
@MrLiquidArrogance11 жыл бұрын
Sweet. Glad the video helped, and I'm glad your mouse is still going strong for you. The G5 you see at the beginning of this video I've had for ages. I bought it at Frys when it first came out. . . that thing is still going strong. I used to have to clean the scroll wheel on it, too, though. The scroll wheels usually work with a sensor reading an alternating pattern of "spokes" on the wheel, so when they get filled with dust the sensor can no longer "see" the pattern and it won't work.

Cheers for this! I ended up splicing in another cable (old MX510 lawl) as the one on mine was a bit stuffed and hacked a work around to avoid using the plastic bit to hold the cable in place as it exits the mouse. No solder either, but I'll try and get that done at some point. Works beautifully now instead of disconnecting constantly.

+E A wtf, you're right. I see some sold for $60+postage, but a lot of them also sold for $200-$300, wtf is going on? Perhaps they are last-minute X-mas presents, or last-minute replacements for kids who broke their gaming mouse at the start of the holidays? I can't figure it out. Perhaps it's a money laundering operation, i hear that this is happens a lot with suspiciously overpriced ebay items. Maybe i should think of selling mine, TBH i've always hated how hard it is to click the middle-button.

Thanks! I just repaired my Alienware Tactx (same as the g9 and g9x basically... rebranded Logitech with no replaceable shells) Turns out the cable was completely shredded at the mouse/cable junction. I ended up just stripping the wires and twisting them together, followed by tape to keep them all separated. So far so good. The TactX seems to have more room in the housing than the G9. Also the ribbon is soldered on, so you have to work with the top of the mouse attached. Eitherway... Thanks again

Then followed the instruction in the video problem was I had not only the black also 2 other cables broken. I cut them and put them together and plugged in usb port to check.. it worked! (the mouse was still open) only problem I used duct tape instead of solder the cables :) so the cable was too big to get the it under the main board. Then I simply put the cable from the screwed laser mouse in the the old one. Now everything runs smooth. Anyway helped me a lot!

10/10 for the vid! Although I did lose the little plastic grommet under the mousewheel; supplemented this by using a bit of the leftover rubber cable shield and pushed the screw through it. Just a warning for those doing this:in the video he incorrectly removed the ribbon clip. The clip pops up about a quarter inch and the ribbon slides out. I did it as shown in the video and the plastic clip broke. Super glue saved it.

fpsDREDD i noticed in the vid, bc when he forced it one of the sides popped up, so i took a little flathead from an eyeglass repair kit, and pried both of the levers up the ribbon is some what harder to put back in depending on how bent it is and the angle its going to be in once the mouse is closed, i didnt want too many creases if not any easiest tip for that once i figured it out... place the bace of the mouse stationary, and apply the ribbon carefully on the stationary base...then hold the top shell in place while clicking down the tabs with a small flat head/needle tool etc

Xlint vid.. I knew my cable was the prob did not know there was a known issue. great lil tip on how to save the cable stress.. In the past when I have not been able to save them or needed to make my own lil mods to the cable stress hot glue is a great way to fabricate one in a pinch.. messy but functional. also not a bad idea to let the heat shrink extend past the cable stress a couple inches to keep the cable from kinking.. it does get a lil bit too tight of a bend there.

Ok. After attempting this fix here's my 2c. Those that do have the shorted wire unlike this video will most likely have the wires just break away and fall away with minimal interference. What you actually need to do is extend the black wire's length in the amount of lost shorted wire otherwise you will most likely end up with reassembly problems as you NEED to re guide the wires in the correct position in the mouse housing under the PCB.

Is there any way to get a replacement cable? Mine just died. Completely. No lights whatsoever, but I think the best way would be changing the whole cable. It seems it connect to a simple port, so it can be removed without any problem. But can I get a such a cable? I doubt Logitech would help. Any thoughts? Quite disappointed. The shielding looks cool, but on a point, it stretched and the actual cable slipped out, thus creating a loop. Just like that. I treated it like a nothing else.
