As an opera singer myself I am all for new and non-traditional productions! Art cannot survive if it repeats itself continuously. The absence of new music and fresh approaches to established repertoire is what is leading to opera’s slow death.

@@danielakerman8241 Bayreuth festival is now a joke thanks to those infamous productions.
@danielakerman8241 Жыл бұрын
@@fabptitpom a joke according to whom, exactly? You? Music critics who have never performed or produced a piece of art in their lives? A bunch of nostalgic blue-hairs who want to see the same production they saw in 1961? And so what? Carmen was a disaster on its premiere. The Rite of Spring caused a riot. The premiere of Lohengrin itself was underwhelming. The opinion of the masses in any given moment is of little consequence to the health of an art form. What is key is constant development, newness, challenging convention. What painter would be taken seriously today if they were doing the same thing that Monet did in the 19th century? (Remember, too, that Monet was not taken seriously and considered a joke by many of his time). Many -- MOST -- of those attempts will fall flat or be utter failures. What matters is the attempt. I may detest a given production of a "standard" repertoire piece, but I applaud anyone trying to give it a fresh perspective.

@@danielakerman8241 I am a early 20s person who recently became interested in opera, and I would love to see more productions that are nearer the original productions. I love modern art, architecture etc so I'm not a reactionary in any way. It's just that us young peoole have never had the opportunity to see these productions as originally envisioned, it's like most modern opera productions are tailor-made for seasoned opera fans who have already seen it all! But as art history has taught us, after the self-indulgent period of mannerism, the baroque period of art started that had more popular appeal. Perhaps a similar development will happen in my lifetime when it comes to opera.

To all the people who bash Paul Frey: for your information - he is the singer who sang Lohengrin the most of all singers in Bayreuth. Do you think they would have hired him year after year - at the holy grail of Wagner- if he was a bad singer- what nonsense. I am German and I understand every word he sings. Surely everbody prefers a native singer buth Frey is wonderful here. Herzog also fantastic- the way he introduced the Herzog Of Brabant here is simply out of this world.

There is so much that is good about this production. My only reservations are about the shrieking Ortrud and Herzog’s ending, where Ortrud seems to win and the child is left standing aimlessly.
