The first lines of this aria are on my husband's (zt'l) gravestone, in the original Russian. It was special message between us. Thank you Lohengrin, from an unending broken 💔.

What a gift he had! No, you will never be forgotten, dearest Fritz... You will live on, with your bright voice, forever youthful, forever bringing us both joy and tears... Whatever he sings is just supremely beautiful and touching. I must say, after hearing Lensky's aria in his rendition, I stopped caring about any of the other characters in the opera.

O my, der Fritz, live in München in 1962 if I am not mistaken. Honestly, his Lensky is incomparable. Even in German, which was customary in the fifties and sixties, singing opera in your native language, I don’t even notice the difference. Like I think his wife said, in many ways Fritz felt a close kinship to the Lensky character. He was and remains THE consummate male singer IMHO.

Thank you Lohengrin what a mesmerizing talent he had. It is fascinating how many gifted singers can sing an aria correctly even beautifully but so few can communicate feelings. He can do it form the very first note. What a talent, what an artist!

One of your favorites and mine, Montserrat Caballe, talked about Wunderlich and chose Tamino's aria, Das Bildnis....for one of her Desert Island discs. It's available on the BBC site. She sang Pamina with him and gave him a locket with her picture in it.

many many many singers were extremely to phenomenally talented but even fewer had Magic in their singing (as Onegin65 usually says)... Wunderlich had that unexplained element of Magic that totally transfers you in another realm
