Today I'm painting a beginner friendly loose sunset seascape scene with the twinkling lights of a distant town on the far shore.
The idea is to try to let go and paint a wet in wet sky, sea and sand as loosely as possible, aiming to keep it really softly diffused. Once dry, the headlands and rocks are added, lifting out some highlights on the rocks with the corner of a plastic card. It looks challenging, but it is a simple and exciting process that, with a bit of practice, is a great way for getting beginners used to the way water and paint can flow on the page, and getting balanced tonal values with enough darks, while keeping things fresh and tranasparent.
I'm using Millford 100% cotton hot press 140lb/300g weight paper, 11" x 15"/28cms x 38cms, my paper is taped to my board with ordinary decorators masking tape and is at an angle of about 45 degrees so gravity will help me paint. I use various brushes as demonstrated in the video, but use whichever brushes you have.

This is spot on for bringing peace into a chaotic world. I agree with need to go a bit darker. That in turn gives a chance to drop a star or two to emphasize the last vestiges of light. I did hear some gulls called in the background. One point of observation, the direction of the sunset indicates that this photo was taken nowhere near where you live. Other wise the little headland would jut out into the sea from the right hand side. We, (my wife and I) were staying in a Welsh seaside town called Borth. We were quite high up from the sea and the view was stunning across the estuary of the river Aberdovey to the town of the same name. That little place was also on a hill, and the town lights added an air of romance, in the dreamy quality that suited us perfectly with the sound of coastal winds outside the caravan we were in. That was a few years ago, but we both remember out time there with affection. I brought this up as your painting put me in mind of it. Morgaine would like it there because the place is teeming with interesting sea bird. Leaving you in peace now. I'm off. TTFN.

Bob Ross once said "if an artist declares his painting 100% perfect, it's time to lay down his brush, walk away from painting forever..." and your comment, Lois, about wishing your composition was darker reminds me of this quote. I think this is soft, lovely, something that takes me away to a place of serenity. It's absolutely beautiful. :) Fanna Turano Denver, Colorado USA

I really like how you explained your composition, the "C" shape, and linking the rocks together around the painting via the shadow/waves!

Thank you for this content. It is lite in contrast. Just the same I like it. I am a bit confused, the dark pigment that was applied in the wet stages. The spot on the right side, I am not sure what that was to imply? Spray? Mist? Also thank you for explain the carpenters pencil, it now makes sense to me.
