Today I'm painting a beginner friendly semi-abstract misty country lane scene with a couple of cottages disappearing into the mist as the focus, using a limited palette of indigo, burnt umber, burnt sienna and paynes grey. I'm inspired by the work of Ron Ranson for some of these techniques. There's a full 2 part tutorial for this on Patreon, follow the link above if you are interested.
The idea is to paint a simple wet in wet grey sky using a slightly gradualted wash, and then to add a row of trees and country lane background as loosely as possible, using rich, tube consistency paint and allowing the water on the page to and the angle of the board to soften and diffuse the tree line, and finally suggest the cottages with smoke coming from the chimney. It looks challenging, but it is a simple process that will probably take a bit of practice, but is really useful for getting beginners used to the way water and paint can flow on the page, and getting balanced tonal values with enough darks through using rich paint, while keeping things fresh.
I'm using Millford 100% cotton hot press 140lb/300g weight paper, 11" x 15"/28cms x 38cms, my paper is taped to my board with ordinary decorators masking tape and is at an angle of about 45 degrees so gravity will help me paint. I use various brushes as demonstrated in the video, but use whichever brushes you have.
