/ kantelar
Loituma is a young quartet who combine the Finnish vocal tradition with the exquisite sounds of the kantele (Finnish harp). At ease with four-part unaccompanied vocals as well as four-part kantele instrumentals, Loituma were selected Band of the Year at the 1997 Kaustinen Folkmusic Festival.
Over the years, the group has persistently followed its own musical path, skillfully applying different musical influences to its music. It has bravely dived into musical streams of diverse origins. One of the cornerstones of Finnish folk music is the art of singing. Stories and feelings are best conveyed through this instrument. The songs convey the Finnish heritage, aided in the background by Martti Pokela and Toivo Alaspää. Another cornerstone of Loituma is the Kantele, which rings in a splendid and varied way on this recording. Iron and silver clink, rye and wheat bloom side by side.

Finnish is a unique language as is the culture. They have "Sisu" which is strong determination. They fought off the Russians and the Swedes, never had a monarchy of their own, and formed a rather egalitarian society which scores them one of the happiest countries in the world. In this country they were part of the early unions, women's right to vote. A Finn is strong, independent, hard working and eager for justice.

The structure of this song, the lyrics, the instruments, the rise and fall of the pitch, and the vocal harmony made me have to search it out. I heard it on KFAI radio today in Minneapolis. Thanks for posting, I am feeling a little more learned with my Finish appreciation, I also enjoy Gjallarhorn as well, I believe they are Finish.

No, music was made from grief, Molded from sorrow, Its belly out of hard days, Its sound-board from endless woes, Its strings gathered from torments And its tuning pegs from other ills. So my kantele won't play, Will not rejoice at all. Music will not play to please, Nor give off the right sort of joy, For it was fashioned from cares, Molded from sorrow.

@Conway79 As of today, Amazon (US) has "Things of Beauty" available for $13 USD. By your profile I am assuming you are in the UK. I have purchased several CDs from Amazon UK, for delivery to the US - and I have always been pleasantly surprised that I am never hit up for any high (out of the ordinary) shipping charges.

My Kantele The words of this song are from the Elias Lönnrot's collection of folk music, Kanteletar (1840). Truly they lie, they Talk utter nonsense Who say of music: They believe the kantele Was carved by Väinämöinen, Fashioned by a god Out of a great pike's shoulders, From a water dog's hooked bones.

@Conway79 Digelius Music in Helsinki (digelius . com) seems to have both their records, and I know they sell also outside Finland. However for some reason or another they have no webshop- utilities on the pages - instead you are supposed to phone them or send an email. I'm a happy customer myself, but as I'm living in Finland, I don't know the details about the international orders.

@MsEkiam1 Well I don't know for sure if it is Sanna singing, or if she just wrote the song. I am just taking a guess. After listening to this song some more, and comparing it to some other Loituma songs....................... I am thinking it is in fact Anita singing.......... Perhaps someone who knows for sure can comment..
@ralphyboy25
@ralphyboy25 13 жыл бұрын
@MsEkiam1 - Hello. From Wikipedia, I found out that Sanna was a founding member of Loituma, and that she is credited with this song. I do not own the CD "Things of Beauty", so I can not confirm who is credited with the version that is on the CD. To my ear, it sounded like Sanna's voice. Either way, Sanna or Anita, they both have beautiful voices......
