My brother-in-law and I were fishing off a pier on Dauphin Island when he hooked on an itty bitty baby catfish. During the hook removal it flopped on him and its fin went in one side of his middle finger and out the other side right under the bone. He went to the hospital. The next night we were still fishing and he caught an 80 lb black drum.

Most fisherman would have just pushed it through cut then pull it out and keep on fishing. It’s just something that happens but I definitely wouldn’t sit for hours in a er for that. Used to catch hundreds of catfish on trot lines in lake eufaula Alabama. Great video you finally got to catch some decent fish

Only did it once in the 53 years I have been fishing and it was an easy one to remove. Just a #4 snell hook from a walleye rig.

Push the barb through, cut it off. Slide it back out. One way in, one way out. Hurts a bit but much better then getting off the water

It's what they'll probably do at the ER too. It's much better than trying to pull it out with the barb on. There's a reason barbless hooks are only allowed in certain places especially with trout because they do less damage.

In the UK when fly fishing we use those artery forceps to unhook trout, salmon etc. Usually the long version of them. Especially useful if you've deep hooked or gut hooked a fish because they're thinner than long nosed pliers, and, you can clamp and lock the artery forceps together? I don't know if Andrew has his ears pierced or anything, but he so needs to turn that circle hook to an earring, or maybe put it on a leather thing and wear it as a necklace pendant 😂 That 26er was INSSSSAAAAANNEE!

Put the finger in ice to numb it. Push it through, and nip the barb. That far through its the only way unless you want to cut the length of the hook.

That is wild! to get that big of a fish in the boat and then get hooked! That happened to me when I was 12 but didnt happen as cool as that though, hook in a willow tree and fished it out middle finger caught it. The Doc numbed it and we were sitting there playing with the hook in my finger for a few mins before they cut the barb off. The cool thing is that they let me remove my own hook. I think i still have that treble minus a barbed hook lol

That finger is throbbing LOL Got a hoke in my hand when i was solo canoeing the boundary waters... 2 week trip, I was 4 days in. Not that large thankfully! #4 walleye hook. Shoved it thru, flattened the barb, pulled it, washed it in the lake(water up there is pure enough to drink!), a little antibiotic from the first aid kit and a bandaid. Kept on paddling... throbbed for 2 days then fine. If it had looked infected I did carry 10 days worth of antibiotics on those trips. More than enough to get me to a takeout location and then to a local hospital. 75 pound pack on those trips to start, 100 pound canoe... and portages from hell because I took routes that were barely traveled to get back to my families trapping line location (just outside the Boundary Waters on the SW edge) to check up on our cache of gear. Cover stuff better if needed then back to paddling to get to my pre-planned takeout location where I could call for pickup.

I feel for you, I've been there twice. The only difference is both of mine were with big treble hooks from lipless cranks. 😅 one was a 4lbs largie and the other was a fowl hooked catfish about 2lbs, hooked him in the back by accident. He was all good but I wasn't.

I been hooked on the head at 6 year old. My uncle took me fishing on the pier. Then a guy saw us catching fish so move by us. Casting his line over our line. My uncle told him. He can fish by us just be careful casting since I was there and is 6 year old. Needless to say he was rude to my uncle and started moving closer. After catching a few fish. He started casting haphazardly then he hooked me through my baseball cap and into my scalp. When I was 6 feet away from him by my uncle fishing cart. Needless to say I cried in pain and bled through my hat. My uncle yelled at the guy and cut his line. While holding a towel to my head. The pier owner came to see why there was yelling and saw what happened. Ask my uncle if he need an ambulance or police but the guy that hook me started pack his stuff and left. As fast as he can. The pier owner and my uncle work together to get the hook out then clean the wound. I lost my hat due to it being cut to get to the hook but the pier owner let have some ice cream and clean towel and ice on the wound while we wait for an ambulance. Ambulance clean the wound to make sure I didn’t have a concussion from the sinker as well. while my uncle talk to the cop. Pier owner ban that guy from fishing on the pier but my uncle never went back due to people not following the rules so he bought a boat.
