But really honestly, leftism has trained these people to be very disagreeable people. "Be an activist!" "Be an agitator!" These people engage in attention seeking behaviors while simultaneously hate the general public. It's very dysfunctional. Leftism also tells them to "love themselves," so they turn inward to their own bodies and internal thoughts and try to draw out some sense of self-generated meaning and affection. No it's not. I worked with a woman once who hallucinated/imagined farm animals everywhere. One morning when I got to work she had been roleplaying some sort of...farm drama in her room the whole night where the hen had laid eggs that the evil pig had eaten. There was also a badger, but it was never made clear to me what his role was in the performance. And indeed, just as soon as I entered I realized exactly what those eggs had been, and it was quite a prolonged cleanup while this crazy person was loudly trying to tell me about the farm animals. Anyway, that woman looked far more sane than any of these cretins. At least once I had made her brush her teeth about 55 million times that morning. They really don't pay psychiatric nurses enough...

Play the guitar until the neighbors complain rather than veg in front of the TV. Stuff like that, to drag them back to the real world at least a little. But it's rough for sure. We try to find ways to laugh about stuff. That always helps.

@@thistagworked Also, it's always very difficult if you dwell on it. Even the objectively comical things that happen almost every day are so deeply tragic just because of where these people are. You laugh all the time, but then feel guilty for laughing and just want to cry. So you just switch off after a while and the whole process starts again the next day. The thing is you can start to like the weirdos. It takes a certain strength to be a mental patient. It sounds weird, but it's sometimes easy to admire them a little bit for staying themselves when surrounded by all that crap for years and years. Definitely easy to sympathize with them.

The saddest cases are the ones who realize there's something wrong with them and who start those harrowing conversations with you. When that happens I am always just completely honest with them. You can't lie to them anyway. Plus that they started the talk in the first place means they trust me, so what would I be if I lied to them? But they are usually very good at saying no to things. I like people who say no to things. Many people like me get very condescending with the patients. I'm the exact opposite and try to see the world from their crazy perspective so I can understand it. I like it when they say no. Then we can move on to negotiations, and once I get them to do that I usually get voluntary engagement in whatever it is we're doing, and a better relationship with them generally. They know I'm not just going to command them around as if it's boot camp, and that has a calming effect. Some things I refuse to negotiate about, though. But if it's rare enough they never complain. But eating **** definitely crosses my line. Brush your teeth for a few hours if you want to talk to me, please!
