There is a great podcast Bring Back V10's which did an episode about the Lola story, and what went wrong. Would highly recommend anyone interested enough to search out this video listens to that podcast.

i think the fault was of MasterCard (principal sponsor) because they knew the car is not ready to run until the next year.
@N1Gaming12 жыл бұрын
This is true, Mastercard rushed Lola to enter the 1997 season when they planned to enter in 1998. This gave them alot less preparation time and when they needed Mastercard most they abandoned them leaving them totally fucked up. They had alot more potential than this, shame.

Rush to the max: 1) No wind tunnel test (or CFD) 2) They had to find cheap engines fast and they didn't have any other choice than use Ford Zetec-V8 engines. These engines were poor in 1995..let alone 1997. Lola was designing their own V10 engine, but.. It's amazing that they got their car moving. I mean another new team, Stewart, had already presented their car when Lola started to design theirs.

And it's even worse, as Diniz bad time was caused by technical issues and because having already a practice time of 1:33.6 he was allowed to race anyway. He also did a similar time in the warmup. For Lola however this was the only time at least one of their cars stayed under 1:41…

I was offended by the fail of the Lola team. They were so succesful in other categories, that I thought they could the Williams, Ferrari, McLaren level in 2-3 years. This tragic result is obviously Mastercard's fault. But at least a great F1 joke was created: MASTERCARD LOLA '97: Salary of the drivers: 1,2 M dollars Cost of the motor: 6 M dollars Travel to Australia: 200 K dollars Qualifying the cars to the race: PRICELESS
@carsismeZ0613 жыл бұрын
I wonder if Lola would still be involved in F1 if MasterCard didn't rush them into entering a year early.
@azapro91112 жыл бұрын
Seeing MasterCard suffer for their complete lack of knowing the reasons why you shouldn't rush the team you sponsor into building a car in two months flat instead of waiting a year and testing like you'd agreed: PRICELESS. Some F1 teams are run like well oiled machines. For all of the others, there's MasterCard.

"We have the experience, the commitment and the desire to succeed in F1. We have knowledge from our composites shop, our engineers cross over from both programs and the wind tunnel work we have done at Cranfield with the Indycar is directly applicable to F1. We have basically worked at lightening components down to F1 needs. We have taken the best ideas from specialists in the wind tunnel, aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics and the like to produce the final machine." Mastercard said. :>

At least the HRT was tested in a air tunnel. It is slow but at that time F1 wasn't as competitive as is today.

Tyrrell and Minardi had an engine that was up to snuff. Lola had the engine that Forti had used in 95 and 96.

It probably was. Lola wanted to develop their own V10 but because MasterCard told them they had to go in a year early they had to get what they could at the lowest price. On my channel is the full story of the team.

@mundotaku So, there's been 3 races and what I can say is, the HRT is the slowest, but barely, they're only a tenth off of lotus and virgin, but the HRT is reliable, unlike the Virgins. Maybe at Barcelona, when all teams come with major upgrades(new aero kits, new hydraulics, new everything) they will catch up and pass, or get left behind.

@f1baker Blame it on Mastercard, their main sponsor. They've been pressured to get it on track early, despite it isn't tested and perfected yet. They could have just wait for the 98' Championship instead. Those cars looked great to look at, like an eye candy with a harmony of colors that stands out among other teams. Sadly it didn't go further than after Brazilian GP 97'.

Tested? When Mastercard told them to enter they hadn't even designed the car
@mundotaku_org14 жыл бұрын
No, they aren't. At least not faster than the Lotus. We should wait and see if in a couple of races they get to be at least at the same level of the new teams after the practices.

@f1baker i reckon they also lacked drivers.. Diniz PAID Arrows for his seat that year and is far more capable than either of those two.. its a pretty well knowen fact that if you put Schumacher (or Hakkinen or even Hill) in a lower class car they can still drag it close to the front..
@PJ243614 жыл бұрын
they can't be that bad, they've got enough money, and the car is designed by dallara, who make the chassis for indycar, formula 3, and they were in f1 before. they may not be as fast as the more experienced guys, but i'll bet my ass that they're faster than virgin and lotus.
