FILM DESCRIPTION:
"How did they make a movie out of Lolita?" teased the print ads of this Stanley Kubrick production. The answer: by adding three years to the title character's age. The original Vladimir Nabokov novel caused no end of scandal by detailing the romance between a middle-aged intellectual and a 12-year-old nymphet. The affair is "cleansed" ever so slightly in the film by making Lolita a 15-year-old (portrayed by 16-year-old Sue Lyon). In adapting his novel to film, Nabokov downplayed the wicked satire and sensuality of the material, concentrating instead on the story's farcical aspects. James Mason plays professor Humbert Humbert, who while waiting to begin a teaching post in the United States rents a room from blowzy Shelley Winters. Winters immediately falls for the worldly Humbert, but he only has eyes for his landlady's nubile daughter Lolita. The professor goes so far as to marry Winters so that he can remain near to the object of his ardor. Turning up like a bad penny at every opportunity is smarmy TV writer Quilty (Peter Sellers), who seems inordinately interested in Humbert's behavior. When Winters happens to read Humbert's diary, she is so revolted by his lustful thoughts that she runs blindly into the street, where she is struck and killed by a car. Without telling Lolita that her mother is dead, Humbert packs her into the car and goes on a cross-country trip, dogged every inch of the way by a mysterious pursuer. Once she gets over the shock of her mother's death, Lolita is agreeable to inaugurating an affair with her stepfather (this is handled very, very discreetly, despite the slavering critical assessments of 1962). But when the girl begins discovering boys her own age, she drifts away from Humbert. One day, she leaves without warning. This is humiliation enough for Humbert; but when he discovers who her secret lover really is, the results are fatal.

In real life Ron Wood of the rolling stones married a very young 18 yr old a couple years ago . He was about 67 years old then. Just like Humbert Humbert(James Mason) he locked her up . She finally got out of it and told all about crazy domineering Ronnie Wood . This is par for the course for males in midlife crisis . They desire the girl not so much for sex but they feel their mortality will be at an end in ten or so years . This anxiety and depression leads to the desire for a Lolita. Most of them just fantasize . Those who get involved will serve long jail sentences

Humbert is portrayed as someone urbane and sophisticated trapped in a provincial small town populated by slightly lecherous people, a refugee from Old World Europe in an especially crass part of the New World. For example, Lolita's piano teacher comes across in the film as aggressive and predatory compared to which Humbert seems fairly restrained. The film character of John Farlow talks suggestively of "swapping partners" at a dance in a way that repels Humbert. Jenkins believes that in the film it is Quilty, not Humbert, who acts as the embodiment of evil. The expansion of Quilty's character and the way Quilty torments Humbert also invites the audience to sympathize with Humbert.

This 1962 make is far far superior to the 1997 version. Sue Lyon in the 1962 version is far more powerful than Ms. Swans interpretation. Probably the director is to blame. Ms. Swan was 15 and acted like an 8 year old. It was annoying. She was ridiculous in her portrayal of Lolita. Again the casting and directing missed the mark completely. Sue Lyon was actually even younger than Ms Swan, 14 and way more mature and acted age appropriately. I did love Jeremy Irons better however in the role. It was brave of Mr. Lyons to have to endure the acting of Ms. Swan. Mr. Irons with Ms. Lyons would have been a more appropriate match.

It's more than that, much more. Earlier in the movie "Humbert" (Mason) has a line in a chess game with Charlotte: something about "taking her queen". The statement about "Rex" and "Ray" being derived from words for king is very important to the hidden meanings here and in the book.

I watched this movie for free . Found it on a search from an alternative search engine than stupid google . I put out of my midn about James Mason one suggested , not shown, sex play with the underage female . And I laughed my head off. Shelly Winters(Lolita's mother) and Sue Lyon(Lolita) were really great funny, farcical actresses in this . I thought Peter Sellers was given too much leeway and really over did it .

I am not condoning this, but in all honesty- she doesn't look like a child in this film portrayed as she does in the 1997 version. She appears to be a young woman in her late teens. The 1997 version was far worse and hard to watch at times.
