another great thing about lolita is that a lot of it is second hand (lacemarket!!!)! 90% of my wardrobe is second hand which is quite common which is great for sustainability but also for your pockets because a dress is an investment! as long as you look after it while it is in your life, you can sell it for pretty much the same price later on!

@@LisaFevral Yeah you can't really mindlessly buy Lolita Fashion unless you have an unlimited budget and it is very normalized to sell pieces you don't wear anymore that there are whole websites dedicated to it. Like Lace Market, and ClosetChild.

this video was so comforting to watch after a long day 😌 I was really into lolita when I was younger too. I think it’s definitely easier to find things these days because of adjacent styles like cottage core, which you can use to find pieces to style in a lolita way

I've always wanted to get into Lolita fashion but I'd be lying if the prices didn't scare me. If I want to buy dresses I can't get them from Ali Express because they're cheap (and the community hates them) and have to go through some really weird means like... Going through TaoBao which is so hard when you don't speak Chinese. Maybe someday...

There are TaoBao resellers that are in English and other languages that you can use for example: Devi Inspired. I know Bodyline has a weird reputation in the Lolita community but they do have cute cheaper Lolita Fashion on their US site.

I get ya, but I do wanna say the community hates them for good reasoning. Most stuff sold on websites like that are stolen designs and images, youd be getting something horrible quality while also supporting a knockoff. It unfortunate that it is a very expensive fashion :(

Dear Lisa, I love your videos so much. This interview was so informative. I loved hearing about the origins of lolita fashion. It made me think about how motifs of this style can be seen in so many subcultures today. Also!! Your fenty video has inspired me to try looking for new brands to shop from. I totally get if you want to keep specific brands to yourself but a video about sustainable clothing brands for basics and even just a video for sustainable new designers would be super cool. I love seeing people with this type of style like a not « casual style »i would say because it’s also the style that make us different and diversified. Sadly, unless you do something along the lines of a swap meet or walking to a local seller, obtaining clothes for lolita, whether new or secondhand, may have a high tendency for waste and contributing to gas emissions. I think of this every time I order overseas. I try to buy in "bulk" with Wunderwelt and ClosetChild, and, depending on the size and weight, items are sometimes individually wrapped. You could choose to reuse those plastics and the potential box it came in, but I doubt most interested in lolita fashion will do this when it is not a visually appealing container. I used to use Lace Market way more, and I think two reused package material and one shipped in a biodegradable bag. Overall, yes, the turnover rate in lolita fashion is certainly not going to be as high as other fashions because the higher price point can be seen as a viable investment and lead to more careful decisions, but some people still get the impulse buy regrets and the concept of fast fashion has surely infiltrated the wholesale side of lolita. It is more the matter of if the individual will care for their clothing for numerous years and not have the cyclical mentality to sell online after a sparse number of wears to get the money for something else online that will soon be sold off. Closet cleanouts can be personally helpful, but I am always amused by seller descriptions that admit they wore a dress once and they bought it from someone who wore it once or they never even opened the wrapping.

I was very curious about this video and liked all the things you two talked about but cannot help but wonder why you did not talk about Nabokov and therefore found the section about s3xual connotations lacking as I don't think it's just a matter of "some creep might have a specific fetish" but this style is literally named after a book about child a8use and I think when talking about the style and using its name you should reflect on and discuss that. I don't mean this in a cancel culture way btw, just would like if you talked about it and maybe didn't push it aside like that ^^'

It is not named after the book or the movie. It just shares the same name. We don't know for sure why the name was chosen but since the style has nothing to do with child abuse it's fair to assume the japanese girls in the 1990s who created the style didn't know much or anything about some gross book/movie from the other side of the pacific. 🩷

I would say no because there's not necessarily any religious or spiritual meaning behind it considering most of it takes inspiration from Roccoco, Victorian, Edwardian, etc. Cultural appropriation in fashion is defined as using symbols from other cultures without any consideration for the meanings of the items. The European style that Lolita takes from is generally considered as eras of fashion, do not generally hold cultural meanings behind the garments, and are mostly aesthetic so that's why I wouldn't consider it cultural appropriation.

Just to add onto what Alabama has said, Japan also has a history of incorporating European/Western style wear since the time that they were forced to come out of isolation to trade and engage in worldly affairs by the american navy expedition led by Admiral Matthew Perry in the 1850s (and even more influence too when America occupied Japan after WWII for a brief time). Even the common navy styled school uniform (which has now evolved in an expansion on this style) is taken from the navy uniform of the Americans who came to Japan during this expedition. So Japan has their own history too with European/Western fashion being incorporated into their own culture. I mean up to this day, the fashion in japan since the 1800s have evolved away in daily wear cases from their own traditional wear into a more western style. I think with your logic, you would have to argue that a majority of non-traditional clothes in Japan is cultural appropriation, since they are not following their own traditional culture and wearing kimonos and yukatas daily, which would just be non sense.

As someone who lives in europe you really cannt culturally appropriate western european culture considering its imperial history. Western european culture was forced on the rest of the world through colonialism and thus is now globalised. Eg: tie/blazer suits/tailored pants are seen as a professional attire everywhere but originates from west europe bc it was forced on everyone else.
