It is the Ref's job to protect the fighter, it is the corners job to "train" the fighter. Many boxing commissions, especially in the WBC, don't even allow throwing in the towel, the corner must inform the inspector and he is in charge of trying to get the referee's attention. Do a search for "The WBC Red Towel" and you can see more details. Same in Muay Thai, it is not allowed to throw in a towel or sponge and it is up to the ref to stop the fight if he sees fit. This was a WBO fight, and not sure what rules applied, but from the way it went, I'm guessing that it wasn't permitted.

The man is dragging his feet. It's like someone having a stroke. Boxing is a dangerous sport. The corner or the referee have to protect the fighter because they are trained to fight on. The knockdown he landed flat on his back and already hit his head. I like boxing but everytime I see scenes like this it's very hard to watch because we still have no way to repair the human brain. I'm so conflicted with my admiration for the courage and toughness of these boxers and the thought of the damage they will have to carry at the end of their lives.

Sire Vasiliy Lomachenko, genius boxer, absolute gentleman. How many times he tried to ask Comey's team to stop the fight. Boxing is about competing and winning a match. NO boxer or athlete of any kind would want to hurt/damage their opponent any more than is necessary to win a match. Its a sport, a competition, not a slug it out til you disable or kill someone.
