If we actually go to London or watch British dramas, their accents sound different from one of Standard British English. This time, we're going to take a look at the dialect of London Neighbourhood and the dialect of Liverpool. Hope you enjoy, and if you like this video, please share it! :)

+tom c It's very tricky. I lived in different areas of the US for a year and a half (Boston for 6 months, LA for 4 months, the rest in Louisiana)... The local accents and dialects were hard to grapple, especially in Louisiana, but I managed. A year later, I was sent to London and JEEESUS FUUCK, I could understand only ~half the words! I was expecting the kind of like posh accent, but hoooly damn, that wasn't the case. Only stayed there for a week or so, so I couldn't really get used to it, but it's different from "standard" british, definitely.

Yeah standard English is only really used by tv presenters/newsreaders. There are so many dialects in the UK for such a small rock. Even within single cities accents vary albeit slightly.

+Thalanna I've only come to understand how difficult to understand my strongish London accent is to non-natives, when others pull me up on particular words and phrases I use. I live in Northern Ireland now, and I've had to slightly 'posh up' my dialect just to get by here. Its always nice returning to The Smoke, and be able to speak 400 words per minute, and not have to repeat myself! You're right about the broadcasting 'not quite plum in mouth posh, but nearly'. accent. BBC English.

Saw this on Have I Got News For You and was amused by it! You're good. The glottal stop I recall reading about in school and Scouse was an accent I heard on TV. I think growing up watching soaps such as Brookside, Byker Grove, Eastenders etc helped with my awareness of regional accents up and down the country, really as well as people around me from a young age.

Theres the main dialects, but theres also more subtle accents. but it takes a life time to learn them. you can even go down to street in some cases. this is the difference between "official" english technically correct, but real english is a little more flexible. A few years ago i lived in america and met someone from near my home town, talking to each other our accents got broader until the americans we were with couldnt understand us. But you did a great job (i live near liverpool so hear it every day)

Excellent! Well observed. I think the first example (wa'er) is more about laziness of pronunciation that most of us Brits can be guilty of (like not picking your feet up when you walk) and occurs both up and down the country and the second Liverpudlian Scouse being a true regional dialect. Incidentally my father being from Durham County pronounced water as wätä.

That video was fascinating. I have quite a strong London accent, and I have to slow down when I speak to my in-laws in Northern Ireland as they don't always understand me unless I use a little more RP, and slow down. Fortunately, my wife knows what I mean, mostly! So no need to obsess about getting it 'right'. Even native English speakers can experience difficulty when speaking to one another. Another thing for people to know is that Londoners, like New Yorkers, speak VERY QUICKLY. Scouse is a lovely, sing-songy dialect - a bit Irish and a bit English.

안녕 빌리! I'm quite impressed by the accent, British English seems to get so little attention in Korea that it's doubly impressive that you can not only hear the difference but do a good job of mimicking the differences. If you're up for a challenge, you should try an Australian accent (or varieties of Australian accents)--they are famous for being very hard to emulate. ㅋㅋㅋ
@TornadoCreator
@TornadoCreator 8 жыл бұрын
Not bad. Isolating a single change in dialect seems odd, but it's a good way to explain the differences. This is quite adept observations of the differences. I grew up near Liverpool so it was interesting to see someone looking at the accent as an outsider. I would have said the most prominent parts of the accent where the higher stresses placed on 'e' sounds. Particularly 'er' and 'eh' sounds, and especially at the end of words. The flattening of 'o' sounds, so they sound closer to 'e' sounds. And finally, we also use the glottal stop in place of 't' sounds here. The two you picked out are true though, although the 'k' sound is starting to fade now, most people in my generation don't do that to the same extent that older generations do (or it's isolated to other parts of Liverpool). Good video. Keep it up.
