So grateful that Hannah decided not to quit music two years back and instead wrote this song and then the guys convinced her to continue through with California Soil. I love London Grammar, Hannah's writing and her voice. There is a certain energy that comes from their music that is unlike anything else.

I wish this voice could make people stop chasing America. I have been there sevral times, there is a strange mixture of beauty and dread over there, the pity is that the spectators from everywhere else on this planet is tainted by mass media over decades. Tainted in a contradicting way. I remember, back in the days, when I was a fairly "young" man, they wanted me to run a bookstore in Texas. I was flattered by the concept. But I asked myself;could I really find a home in America? America is a lot of things and ideas, just ask Laurie Anderson, she knows, she's lived there. But it is amazingly beautiful that a new band like London Grammar can make people reflect on what America actually is and means. This is a top 10 song for me in 2021, beauty and wisdom, thank you guys! I stayed in Norway, little America, as I call it today...I can only hope.

@bjbb5164 Жыл бұрын
For the band: Despite your analogy of your youthful dreams to American dreams, the lyrics are a huge turnoff to me, an American. Both of my parents were born in 2 different European countries. They immigrated to America (separately) for a better life (not to become famous & in the Big Lights like your own dream). The American dream isn't "youthful popularity, good looks, wealth & celebrity" any more than it is a dream for kids in any other country. You're watching too much TV and hanging out with too many entertainers to get such a skewed... a very wrong impression & then vocalizing it to millions of people. The American dream is "freedom from oppression, and the dream to have an OPPORTUNITY to have a job & work hard, keep their noses clean and, therefore, have a comfortable (perhaps even more so) life" (and winning the Lottery might fit into a few dreams). Shall I write lyrics about England?... darn... such a Horrible and Tainted history of imperialism and aristocratic elitism... more so than almost any other country... what a crucifying song that would be to YOUR country. I can think of bad things about any country's singers & citizens that chooses to lash out at others. Such an insult... shows your character. btw... I have been able to live the American Dream... the daughter of immigrants without the help of any special privileges... having a Wonderful life for more than 6 decades thanks to hard work and Opportunities. Thankfully, we're far away from Hollywood. Perhaps you should take your video-making to other parts of the world where, maybe, you won't be so insulting. Not interested in your 'product' after this song.

@@bjbb5164thank you! I wondered if I was the only one wondering this? I’m also a son of two immigrants and my parents came here from a shitty place that was declining and wanted more for their family. I am proudly American, and I am proudly living the American dream. Yes things can always get better, the government sucks and is corrupt, the schools churn out ignorant activists that hate the country whose nest they safely lash out from. Something about this song strikes me to be about the music industry. Maybe the American music industry. Maybe she’s talking about never having a home here as in her music never gained traction here? Or maybe wasn’t what the labels here wanted? Maybe her American dream was to make it big here but couldn’t or didn’t want to compete with the likes of Nicky Minaj or Cardi B or whatever to make it. Yes I feel slighted and I’m defensive about my home, but I’m trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. They could also just be salty Brit’s still feeling the sting of American independence 🤷♂️

I'm not familiar with London Grammar's writing process, but this song is amazing. Great art invokes thought and interpretation. The last 5 years of being American has been strange. We're hardworking and lazy, we're proud and embarrassing. We're trying to figure out whether a country of absolute individuals can succeed and we're not sure. All of that is reflected in this song, by a band from another country. The mirror is brutal sometimes.

I had never heard of this song, and I had never heard of the band even, before last night, when I fell asleep with the radio on in the background, and when I awoke, it was an entirely different programme, and as I really woke up, this was playing, so I literally Googled the verse I remembered. Amazing that I should come across it like that, because it appears, like some other people, it speaks to me of my youth, and the dreams of the career path I had. I put in the time and effort, perhaps too much at times, but the dream didn't come true. That's not always a bad thing. I learned some valuable lessons in life. So, I did some reminiscing whilst listening to this. You do that when you get older.

Like she feels "America" does have a home for her, which you don't share? Well I'm afraid it's naïve to expect that from a political system - any of them. But it's just like Orwell said, all things being equally bad, some are "more equal" in that sense as well🤔🤔🤔. Like comparing two chronical patients: both are ill, both chronical - but one is capable of working and supporting his family while the other bedridden and barely supporting life in his own body...

Thank you, London Grammar. This must be one of the most beautiful lyrics I ever saw. Anyone in art - or anyone with a dream, really - must have had that moments. Having a mental block, comparing yourself with others, questioning yourself, and anxious about whether you actually have any future in it. If you are one of those, I hope all the strength in the world for you. It's alright, amongst all the unoriginalities and all the uniqueness in this world, you still matter - you always do.

Beautiful song, London Grammar hits the nail on the head...America is a forced & failed dream for the majority that work hard but won't lose their soul or sell their grandmother for $dollars$ to become uncaring, callous or insidious towards fellow Americans...the have's & the have-not's have never been farther apart. London Grammar is willing to give the middle finger in protest to 'The American Dream for the few not the many'...brave sentiment! American Capitalism worships the $dollars$ not the people who make the things that make the dollars for the wealthy. America is a Pyramid Scheme.

To me it talks about realising you were somewhere where you backed up and gave 100% of yourself to something or someone on everything and slowly forgot about yourself. Suddenly you realise all the effort, all that dream chase was nothing because "America" had nothing to offer you and the dream was never meant to be real... It's about finding your inner self again and learn to appreciate you as you are in the place where you are... Letting go of what was preventing you from doing that, letting go of the past a live your present because you're only on this life for a brief moment
