Join Simon Bourne (Si-Finds), Stephen Auker (The Man with Hat) and moi as we mudlark along the Thames at Wapping near the site of Execution Dock - where pirates met their sorry end.
You can find Stephen's KZbin channel here:-

It was Stephen's first mudlarking outing and it was a beautiful, hot summer day. We found a lovely variety of finds from different periods of history, and Simon also bought a few of his impressive previous finds to look at over a beer at the Prospect of Whitby after our mudlarking expedition.
Jonathan Beamish of Local Colour was also with us for a while and provided us with some super drone footage. Thanks Jonathan!

If you want to try mudlarking, you do need a permit and you can find the details on the Port of London Authority website

Thanks for joining us. If you have any suggestions, ideas of comments- Im always happy to hear from you.
Thank you.

Nicola! I stumbled upon your channel and I’m absolutely fascinated! I live in North Carolina in the US. We are happy to find anything that’s even 100 years old 😆. These objects from the 16 and 1700’s are truly treasures! I am definitely hooked on your vids and I will be watching! Cheers from an American “cousin”! 😉🙂

I so love watching you all mudlarking around the Thames. I'm a historian & all the things you find just perk my interest every single time. The half brick, pins & later, the top of the Bellarmine jar I'd say were what was left of someone's dwelling & yard along the Thames after the fire of 1666, when the foreshore was farther out. I wouldn't be surprised if the pins were put in & buried in the very same jar that neck belonged to. The jar broke & after a while the Thames came in more & the pins got well,....pinned under some rock. Just a theory, but it thinly makes some sense of their relative locations where they were found.

I grew up in a house that used to have a pharmacy in the basement in the 1800s. So we’d find old medicine bottles from time to time when we’d be digging/playing around in the back yard. I'm so happy you pointed out the gallows at Wapping. I've read that the word 'whopper' for when you catch a large fish came from the corpses of executed people dropped into the Thames at Wapping and I guess fisherman would get one on their hook sometimes. So when someone got a large fish they'd say they got a Wapper.

I found this on TripSavvy: London may not have a beach, but the River Thames runs right through the city, and since it's a tidal river, the river banks are uncovered every day. In the 18th and 19th centuries, many poor people in London searched the riverbanks for trinkets that had been dropped into the water and cargo that had fallen off passing boats, and they would sell the treasures they found. Being a mudlark - someone who searched for these items - was a recognized occupation until the early 20th century. But mudlarking these days is more like beachcombing or treasure hunting for those interested in London's history.

@Welsh Relics On one of her videos, Nicola has put a link to the Port Authority Licensing Office. Mud larking is highly controlled, and you have to buy a licence which only allows you to dig at a very shallow level. You have to be an Official Mudlark to dig deeper and they have an annual licence and are part of the Mudlarking Society. There are also MANY rules about reporting finds to the appropriate authorities. A one day licence is 35 pounds.

Hi, Nicola. I went on and Googled about mudlarking and it would've been too long an explanation for you to do so I understand now. Thanks for another terrific video. By the way I think that roundish item with the bamboo is from the modern day. It looks just like the design of the top of a glass jar that held potpourri back in about 1995, except mine had daffodils.

Thanks Lisa. So glad you enjoyed it. You got me thinking though. I think I'll include in a future video where the word mudlarking comes from as I expect lots of people don't know. Have a lovely day and thank you for watching 😘

The coin at 9 minutes is a 'stuiver' or 5 cent piece of the province Zeeland. The provincial motto is 'luctor et emergo' which translates as I wrestle and emerge (above water as the lion of Zeeland does).
