I volunteered in a very rich part of London which got very high end stuff even Rolex watch and I can guarantee that not all proceeds go to charity. This was a private owned charity shop and the owner kept all the good stuff, used the proceeds to pay themselves and the management staff, bills and other cost. After that I no longer donated to private owned charity shops.

They’re no longer thrift shops now. They’re more like upper class second hand boutiques or consignment for charity. It’s really changed in the last 10 years.

I worked for a well known UK charity and can tell you all for a fact that they donate VERY LITTLE to the cause they claim to support, think 5% little. The only two UK charities who actually donate heaps of their profits are British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK, but mainly BHF. It’s a shame.

The small discs with the inserts in the middle are 45’s. They have two songs, one on each side. They were a big part of music when I was a kid in the sixties. And the Dave Clark Five came along shortly after the Beatles-almost a sound-alike band. So glad you decided to check out the charity shops. I was recently in Scotland and had a lot of fun checking them out while I was there. Would love to see more like this in other parts of town. Thanks!

I remember the 45 records I used to have quite the collection of the small records and big one I think they were the 33 ones k was born in 67 so this was in the latter 70’s and 80’s!!❤

@@nadaleenbrady8183 There were actually three speeds and three different sizes of records: The small ones were 45 rpms (Revolutions per Minute), a medium size (78 rpms) and then the ‘album’ size , which were the 33 rpms. I don’t know when the 78’s were phased out.

In the early 90s, Oxfam and a few number of consignment thrift stores were not as trendy, and that was when you could find good stuff for a song. Those days are over, thriifting is now a trend, and the shops are pricing their pieces exponentially. This was most enjoyable, thanks.

I'm really disillusioned with the second-hand charities in Australia. If you donate clothes or furniture, they will only take what they can immediately put in the shops and bin the rest, or refuse to take it. They do not give anything to people in need - I mean, an old computer desk with a couple of dings in it might not be saleable, but I'm sure there are people who would appreciate having it instead of having to use the kitchen table, for example.

I always donate to the Save the Children op shop. They are grateful for all the donations we have given them. For furniture we ring the Good Samaritans. They are also very good.

As a lover of old rock and roll, my favourite part was definitely seeing that Dave Clarke Five 45. Would never have thought that charity shop would sell 45s. By the way, The Dave Clarke Five were one of the best British bands and probably the second best selling after the Beatles in 1964.

Always fun browsing charity shops. Goodwill here in the states has raised their prices a lot in the past few years: $20 for used Nike sweatpants (joggers)? Scuffed up/ worn out shoes for $15-25? I'm all for charity but also Ebay, Poshmark, Depop has better deals many times.

Those prices are OUTRAGEOUS. I really tried to do some thrift shopping when I was in London at the end of April and I was so disappointed. I didn’t find anything good (in Notting Hill of all places). And when I did, it was overpriced Burberry - not my jam at all. My only good move was going to Pick Weight in Covent Garden/7 Dials area where I found a gorgeous leather tote bag for 44 quid. I thought I would have way better luck than that. I was shocked the Oxfam in Notting Hill had so little in it at the time I was there.

I think Alexander Mcqueen shoes for not even a quarter of the price is a pretty big bargain! guess it's all relative. i work in fashion and know the original retail for items hence why id be impressed. If i wanted to buy them and had the funds at the time i wouldn't flinch at paying that. The polo on the other hand half the price of a basic polo new never rated them tbh.

Here in usa goodwill is a co. Salvation army pay the help , family pathway the money goes to the community. The best one as all volunteers and no ceo most the money got the community and good prices that in chambridge minnesota 👍

I used to go to a vintage shop for bargains. It was located in a wealthy neighborhood. People put stuff on consignment or sold it. The owner had shirts by Charvet, ties by E. Marinella, and suits by Armani. I even bought some tailored suits and had them altered. Everything was affordable. She eventually closed the store. The equivalent today is more like the shops in this video. Much is overpriced used clothing.

At 9:16. The stuff looks new because many rich people buy and never wear the item. They may also wear it to one social event only. I notice the bottom of the shoes have few scuff marks. There are others who buy clothing to be worn only for one season. This means summer wear may only be worn 4-5 times only.

Hi Hannah, Yes I did really enjoy this video. I don’t very often go into charity shops, except to donate, and never to browse, so this was very interesting to me. I wouldn’t personally buy clothes or shoes from a charity shop, I don’t own very many clothes, but I like them to be new when I purchase them. I think you do an excellent job filming discreetly in stores generally, be they charity or otherwise. I wouldn’t worry about noisy cars when you’re filming, it’s to be expected in London. That very distinctive sound of a Supercar lets you know you’re in an affluent area of the city. Your Dad would remember the Dave Clark Five ‘Glad all Over’ ‘Bits and Pieces’ great songs of their time.

Hannah, I believe that little yellowish convertible is a vintage Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. They are powered by an air cooled flat flour cylinder motor which has a distinctive sound. Funny, I was listening to Dave Clark Five on YT a few months ago. Your weather seems to be mirroring mine again. We're in for a bout of cool rainy days. Could it be global warming? (lol). Looks like inflation is also affecting the charity shops. I do enjoy a quiet, relaxed mooch around the neighbourhood with you Hannah. Car boot sales and open markets included. "The Dave Clark Five (DC5) were a British rock and roll and pop band that were active from 1958-1970. The band was formed in Tottenham, London and was part of the British Invasion, becoming rivals to the Beatles in the mid-1960s. Hi Hannah, l came across your video in my feed. How lovely it was to go shopping with you. I am 51 now, but l grew up going round chairty shops with my mum for ages lol. But she had a great eye for cool stuff. It it so funny to see itmes under lock and key. Now l live in Italy so as you can imagine it is full of designer shops. I never go in lol We have outlets here, we they have designerbrands at supposed lower prices. I wish that charity shope were part of the culture here. I have actually had a few interesting conversations with Italians on this matter. From what l can gather, charity shops in Italy are considered to be for charitable shops for people with less money. More focus on the target customer rather than which charity it is for. In my little town we have one, yay. In the nearest city they have more 'vintage' shops. But honestly it would be great if they turned in to charity shops and raised money. They have similar things in. Anyway l loved your video, made me miss the UK. The sound was great. When we are near Worlds End on the King’s Road we will stop at the Oxfam Charity Shop. Wealthy people donate to charity shops in their area. And those shops keep the good stuff to resell. Way back in 1990 I found an Austin Reed tuxedo in my size in excellent condition and I still wear it today. Tuxedos are great for our visits to Glyndebourne for the opera and gala nights on the Queen Mary 2. It was 99 GBP. My wife found a few things on our visit in June.

Cheers Hannah, it’s Sean in Atlanta! What a glorious idea to have shops like that full of designer clothes, many of which look unworn, and save a few quid to boot! But before I go any further, I love that jacket on you! I’m glad you bought it when you saw it instead of waiting on an imaginary order! Back to these designer Charity Shops. Some of the prices seemed high, but it’s a charity shop and I would hope that the majority of money, less operating expenses, would go to an actual charity and help someone! What a concept, right? I would hazard a guess that we have similar shops here in Atlanta especially since people are so brand conscious. I guess you could find some items on sale at around the same price as new, but then that would not help people that I hope that money goes to. I heard about those Cabbie Stands but I never saw one when I was in London on any trip. Of course, I wasn’t looking for them either and I may have walked right past one and it not register with me. I heard that you have to actually be a cab driver to sit inside. Is that true? Hannah, it wouldn’t matter to me what colour the sky was as long as I could walk around London again! I guess I was just totally lucky and had such fine weather on my last trip over. We have a monthly antique show here in Atlanta called Scott Antique Market, the second weekend of every month. It is housed in two enormous buildings on either side of one of our major highways. This show houses 3,800 vendors each month and a friend of mine sells used Barbour Jackets for $150 each. So, I think that one you found for less was probably a bargain! I love Barbour and I own several of their jackets, several sweaters (jumpers) and a few Messenger Bags that I converted to camera bags. I miss the weather to wear them now as it’s just under 100° here in the South. Boy do I detest Summer! You can wear a jumper or a coat in the Summer and if I went out as God made me, I’d still be hot! Just looking at the lack of people in your video and I think you said it was a Saturday! Is this normal? I would have thought it would be packed with tourists… I see the Abbey Road fence is covered with graffiti again! I remember nearly losing my life walking on the Zebra Walk just like my heroes did so many decades ago! I love London! Thanks for sharing your day with me! I love discovering new places to visit! Yeah I’m with you …. Charity shops have became way too pricey. I live in Lymington and anything designer is marked up for silly prices irrespective of condition etc. I loved this vlog btw … can you add a trip to Notting hill to your list please 🙏🏻

My favorite find was a Yoshi Kondo Paris wool coat with embroidered lining. I found it at Goodwill for $14 usd. It was still current and was selling for $500 on the website. It’s a thinner wool rust fabric. I can wear it in California!

It is amazing what you find in charity shops. In fact I donated my wedding dress and vow renewal dress as I knew someone would appreciate it. I know the late diana princess of wales used to donate her clothes and no one knew where they came from. I enjoy looking but thankfully the ones where I live don't charge an arm and a leg. Here in the U.S. it seems like the high end stuff goes to vintage shops and not charity shops. Our three main charity shops are Goodwill, Salvation Army and Out of the Closet. What's been happening as of late, at least as Goodwill is concerned, is resellers. They go into the shops, find things that are of good quality or are vintage/antique buy the stuff then resell it online. To offset this Goodwill has hiked up prices on a lot of stuff. We used to go in and get bargains on clothing back in our struggling days but a lot of the time stuff in these stores isn't worth it anymore. I have a Goodwill near me that is in a mini-mall with a Ross and a Marshalls. I stopped shopping in there for clothes and shoes when I saw that the prices for used goods was the same as getting new items at either Ross or Marshalls.

Here is a thought on the resellers. This has been happening forever. Vintage store owners used to do it and market stall holders, its only that it has moved online and become more obvious. The resellers are making a living by looking for items and reselling many people can't be bothered or don't have time to search through charity stores so they are providing a service in a way. to be honest many of them are probably not making massive profits. Many resellers are not well off and would probably have to rely on a charity if they were not making a living in this way. From what i have seen i suspect the price of everthing going up including the cost to run a store and to assist people is what is driving the prices up. Well, at least here in Australia where rent has gone up and food and more people are relying on charities to survive. I have heard that goodwill is actually privately run as well which means they would pay wages unlike some charity stores that run on volunteer assistance. some stores are possibly doing shady things or running as almost a business i don't doubt that but i don't think it as simple as people think.

I’ve just come across your video Hannah. I can vouch for quite a few of the comments about staff who keep most of the good stuff and rarely put the good stuff out for others to buy reasonably. I’ve worked for a few charities and staff save the good stuff for them, or send them to head office to get checked/authenticated - who knows what happens at the top. With prices sky high especially for rent, bills etc, they probably are charging for things through the roof now, which is wild. Been to a few charity shops in Notting Hill and Kensington and the quality is standard. Saw a nice Marc Jacobs rucksack for £70 in one shop, but needed a good clean. Hope you find some great finds in your future videos! Such an interesting video!

Great vlog Hannah would like more of these charity shop blogs please. It’s not just London but where I live too and I get it’s for charity , but wow - some items are really worn and from high street are really expensive. Used to be fun but it’s Vinted for me . Also some of the designer items maybe the fakes from the likes of Turkey - take your chance I guess . Still really enjoy it though thank you

I really like your jacket . I remember them from when I worked in Dorothy Perkins back in the 80s. I know yours is new . I agree about what you’re saying about designer prices a tad high on certain items . Shoes shouldn’t look worn out or tatty when a high price . I got hand bags from emporium in Henley Cath Kidston … real great condition and price . Also bought a traditional CK polka dot with navy blue from a charity shop in outer Reading , £10. It’s great when the money goes to a charity. Me and my Bessie mate enjoy finding new bargains in them .

Just to say there's the pimlico carboot which apparently is famous for designer stuff but not sure on that don't qoute me on it😂 I've been there a couple of times with reasonable prices the charity shops in pimlico are also pricey but not as pricey as these ones blimey!😂 And also there's the peckham carboot and one I batersea somewhere😂 I love charity shop hunting. Re Dave Clark Five: yes you are getting a comment about them! That was one of my first bands’ album that I bought way back in the mid1960s…. I played “Over and Over” over and over. They knocked the Beatles off the charts a couple of times, so yes Hannah -- you should know them! (Love your walking chats so much)

The second hand clothes should be priced a lot lower regardless the brand name! I like that some ladies when they drop off their clothes, they cut off the labels that charity shop couldn’t put higher price just because it’s prada or gucci ! This what everyone should do

Nice to have the chance at some of the high dollar brands in these stores even if it means doing some digging for a deal. That yellow convertible that you liked that drove by in the last part of the video was a Volkswagen Karman Ghia from the 1960s! Quite a classic design and good to see people driving cars like that around the city

£250 is really a bargain ;) I bough a genuine Longchamp medium bag in pristine condition for £1.50. That is a bargain ! OXFAM is apparently making those high up the hierachy really rich so for that reason only is not a cheap charity shop...and not a charity really as even staff do not volunteer but get salaries...I support Red Cross and Barnardos :)

"Was this boring??"...No... not at all! I totally enjoyed this episode 😁 I love perusing charity shops {op shops are they are called here in Australia}. Usually here, the best days to visit these shops are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, otherwise it's a bit hit and miss, with varied prices...some being very expensive for what the actual item is. It is always fabulous going on the treasure hunt...or just wandering through the shops. Have a great day 😊💐
