During WW2, several tube stations were used as air raid shelters, one being Goodge Street on Tottenham Court Road. On the same side of the road to the tube entrance is the 'American Church in London' and adjacent (to the right of the church) is a bland looking building with a brick tower and vents. This is one of the two 'deep' level shafts to the shelters (West Entrance); the other (a more imposing, 'Deco period/looking' building, consisting of two concrete blocks one circular ‘pillbox’ style and a taller octagonal shaped one), being across the road in Chenies Street. It has a name on the white wall saying 'The Eisenhower Centre'. Again it disguises the vents/poison gas filters to the deep shelter shaft (East Entrance) and is currently used as a storage depository for paper records mainly.

You can also see those 'pillbox' style buildings next to other stations on the Charing Cross branch at Belsize Park, Camden Town, Stockwell and Clapham North/Common/South (though some have been incorporated or surrounded by newer developments). They were intended to be connected into one "deeper than Deep Tube" express line - a mini-Crossrail if you will - but that plan has been shelved after the war.

Smoke not steam. Majority of the steam went through a condensing system and back into the water tanks. As goes the Wellington Arch the police station closed in the early 90s and is now an exhibition area managed by English Heritage. The former water tank area at the top is a private dining space available for hire.
@stewedfishproductions7959

I came here to make the same point about the Wellington Arch being open to the public (as well as for private hire). I attended the launch of David Beckham's Haig, Scottish Whisky brand in 2015 (if I remember the year correctly ?). The views from the top are great photo opportunities and English Heritage have a gift shop plus various exhibitions - well worth a visit. Better to pre-book, as space is limited, although you can just turn-up and take a chance (especially at off-peak times).

Not railway related like these, but the second storey of the outer walls of St Paul's Cathedral are also "fake" - Wren wanted to rebuild the cathedral in a Greek cross layout, but the Church and the King wanted something more traditional. The eventual 'compromise' was that inside it's a traditional CofE nave and aisles, but outside, it looks like the aisles are two-storey.
@keithbulley2587
@keithbulley2587 2 жыл бұрын
And would I not be right in thinking that the dome of St Paul's is, in architectural terms, also fake? The outer dome is supported by a concealed brick cone (essentially a spire) so differs from earlier Italian (e.g. Florence Cathedral) and ancient Roman models (e.g. the Pantheon) which have self-supporting domes. Beneath the brick cone is an inner dome forming the ceiling visible from below.
@JP_TaVeryMuch
@JP_TaVeryMuch Жыл бұрын
@@keithbulley2587 Yes. There's a staircase in between the inner dome and the weather/outside dome of Saint Paul's. Like the Duomo in Florence actually and Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.

Really interesting that, if you ever look down the strand in Liverpool, they have the 3 graces, liver buildings, port of Liverpool and Cunard, but they have a ventilation shaft for the Queensway tunnel and the stone used is the same as the other buildings so it fits perfectly and therefore not noticeable

The original Cavern Club in Matthew St Liverpool was destroyed when it was purchased by British Railways to build a ventilation shaft which was never used! A replacement club was opened just down the street. A great City to visit and I love the accent.

The removal of the overhead railway improved the views of it as well. There is a monument with a ventilation shaft at the back of the Liverpool town hall and the ww2 bunkers, its for an underground car park. Nelson Monument similar to the one in the vid here for Bank station.

Hi Darren, great stuff as ever. I am so glad you started with Leinster Gardens. Back in the pre internet days, this was one of my favourite ‘did you know’ facts with which to bore my friends 😉 Didn’t know about the fake ball though 😂😅🤣 It’s amazing how many air shafts are so cleverly integrated into the architecture around you, which I really like as it shows a bit of imagination 🤔 That entrance to the original tunnel is a very worthy mention. I remember seeing it for the first time and thinking how claustrophobic it must have been to go down as it’s not exactly large! No wonder it didn’t last long! 😄 Great stuff as ever mate 👍🍻🍀

Darren, your comment about the vent at Cornhill was very true. Very grand and fits in perfectly with the local architecture. If it was necessary to have one in Blackpool where I live or anywhere up in the north, they wouldn't fund it and we'd get a concrete grey ugly pipe. London is fantastic to visit and full of fascinating history and engineering too. But it gets too much of the share of public funding and the rest of the country suffers as a result.

Another very good video, thank you. That leinster gardens one, you'd think that vent not really being needed now and the crazy price of property in that area, that it would be viable for someone to build over it, at least partially. I would guess that a full property occupying that space would be £40m + there

This vent is the only one large enough for a carriage to fit through, so they use this 'vent' to install the underground new trains on the deeper lines, as wells as removing the decommissioned carriages. As most lines are interconnected by singular tracks they can use this one large entrance to serve practically the entire underground network. Therefore partially building over it is not viable.

@@bobturpin7611 You are on the right lines, just in the wrong place. The nearest example of what you're suggesting is just outside the wall to platform one at Waterloo Station. There you'll find a void down into the depot for the W&C line. This is where they crane in and out the Waterloo and City line rolling stock. As you mention, there are 'secret' connecting lines at strategic places which allow for movement of old and new stock. There's one joining the Northern line to the Piccadilly at King's Cross for instance. As for the District and Circle, there's no need as just west of Leinster Gardens, past Earl's Court is the Lillie Bridge depot and even the connection to the old cross-London Birmingham to Brighton line.

Check out the chimneys on the corner of the Marriott hotel at the junction of Park Lane and north row, you can see them on Google. If you look closely, you’ll notice that they’re all directly above windows with no route for a flue. They are, in fact, fibreglass and house mobile phone antennas. .

@@AdventureMe I came across them whilst doing some electrical work on the roof about 10 years ago. Not often you find a chimney with a door and lots of cables in the back. I did have some photos, but can’t find them now. You can see the cable trays going to each of the fake ones on the Google satellite images.

a fun one is the colesium ruin under the guilde hall building, you have entry through the art gallery. there is a side tunnel also... that said the building is real but people might not be aware there is a ruin under it.

very cool video... the power company tunnel was featured in a thesecretvault video.. apparently it is connected to the whitetower ... tower of london or something too... the communications lines under are still in use but they have changed hands a few times but seemingly are still owned by a major telecommunications provider, not bt. but the pedestrian tunnel has some water in it now as the pumps that pump the water do not appear in good repair. it connects right into the tower complex.. via unsecure entry.

I’ve found another fake building for you. Behind Jubilee Gardens on Houndsditch on the Spitalfields side of the City of London, there is a building with no windows or doors. It’s a couple of blocks from the Gherkin. It has three large vent pipes out of the roof and sits directly above an underground train line.

Its a bit weird they did not cover up the openings in expensive districts after they switched to electrical trains so expensive properties could be sold. Yes you would need to close down the line for the initial work but the line is down for planned maintenance from time to time anyway.

There are 3 ventilation shafts (that I know of) for the Mersey tunnel built in the 1930s. But I wouldn't call them fake since everybody knows exactly what they are. Two are in Liverpool (North John Street and the Pier Head (behind the Cunard Building). The third shaft is in Birkenhead.
