Hello from the United States! Awesome video! London has some really cool looking buildings. I have always been fascinated with skyscrapers. And since I'm between Chicago and Milwaukee here in the states, I get to see them all the time in my area. So much new construction happening here too. My grandmother actually used to live in an apartment tower in Chicago that stood 645 ft tall. (Lake Point Tower) It's the shortest building in the world with 70 floors. But it was also once the tallest residential building in the world as well when completed in the 60's. It offers a birds eye view of Navy Pier and the Great Lake of Lake Michigan. 🙂 The tallest building in Chicago here is the 1,451 ft tall (1,729 ft with spires) Willis Tower. (Sears Tower) It's observatory gets you up to 1,353 ft high on the 103rd floor. Its crazy high! You can even see Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana from the top floor on a clear day all at the same time. One day I hope to be able to see London with my own eyes. 🙂

to me, the Shard is the only one that is truly awesome on a world class level both in design and height. the Gherkin of course is a superb design but far down on the list for height. I think I have a preference for the Canary Wharf skyline vs the financial center of The City. I'm originally from close to Toronto Canada, which currently has 25 buildings over 200 metres with many more currently under construction. its interesting to compare one city vs another. thanks a lot for putting together this video!

@@pauladams6802 Toronto is note worthy if you are into skyscrapers. other than that I wouldnt advise visiting there. it is a soulless hell hole. during covid I sold everything and moved out of the country rather than live under the tyranny they were pushing on the citizens. Nice video buddy. I love cycling around London and checking out the new towers that have been built or that are rising up. One Canada Square has a real NYC look and feel about it. Great video. I used to work in the BT Tower back in the 80s and we used to say it was the tallest building in the UK. This is because although at 580 ft it was 20 feet shorter than the then NatWest Tower (now Tower 42) it also had a quite bulky 40 ft mast on top, which gave it a total height of 620 ft. 👍

I don't understand how London has so many skyscrapers compared to other UK cities especially with all the historic buildings around London. I live in Birmingham and when ever a skyscraper gets proposed historic England always object to it because it will have a negative effect on surrounded historic buildings yet London has no problems chucking loads of skyscrapers up even though it has much more important historic buildings compared to Birmingham.
@pauladams68022 жыл бұрын
Steven thanks, I think a lot of these tall buildings are built upon the post war monstrosities that were erected on land created in the wake of the devastation caused by the blitz although I know Birmingham was heavily bombed too, I can't explain why this is the case but hopefully Birmingham will start to rise like Manchester & give London a run for it's money!!

@pauladams68022 жыл бұрын
Timothy, apart from the Shard, which you mentioned, I think the only others that are open to the public are the bars in Tower 42 & the Heron Tower but from what I've been told these bars are not the cheapest as you would expect in the City of London with all the bankers & traders etc that no doubt frequent them. Sky Garden in the "Walkie Talkie" (20 Fenchurch Street) which didn't make this list by a couple of places has free access I think, it also has a bar at the top & stunning views across the City & over to the Shard.

@@pauladams6802 Thank you so much for this information, much apricated. I will try to follow it up when I am next in London, maybe some time yet though. EDIT: I found this about 20 Fenchurch Street Sky Garden Bars are now open from 8am, Tues - Fri and from 9am Sat - Sun for 90 mins of walk-in visits. After these times you will need to have a public access ticket which you can get here. Access to the Sky Garden is free of charge on weekdays 10am-6pm and weekends 11am-9pm, see our opening hours here. We ask you to please cancel your ticket if you can no longer make it so we may allow another guest to visit. Tickets are currently available to book up to three weeks in advance. Tickets are only valid for the date and time stated on the ticket and have a time limit of 1hr from time of entry. Although we recommend booking a free access ticket, especially on weekends when it can get busy, if we have space we accept walk-ins all day! Come along and ask our team and we will do our best to fit your visit to Sky Garden in.

@@pauladams6802 yeah .. you should book the free ticket asap for the walkie talkie tower though. or book tables for the darwin brasserie / fernchurch rest. (quite expensive and very noisy in the darwin). I think just get the free access to the sky garden and you can get some drinks from the bar up there would be enough.
