Even winning the lottery can hardly buy you a decent house in London these days.

London almost like a country inside a country. Its population is 9 million and has its own government in the form of an assembally.

I don’t know why in London you need foreign workers “to do jobs local people don’t want to do like collecting rubbish”. I live in Portsmouth and all my bin men are English and born and raised local.
@simonbeech54212 жыл бұрын
Probably because london's population of 8.8m is 43 times larger than Portmouth's 205,000. There are more French people (approx 250,000) living in London, more than the whole of Portsmouth population. The comparisons are simply too large to compare.

Data is a bit dated in this - Londons population is now 9.3 million (not 8.6 million at last estimate), and the top jobs are no longer reserved for 'White' migrants from Europe, US, South Africa and Australia - for example, at times half of millionaire homes are going to Nigerians now, and the international elite that make the city home-away-from-home are dominated by those from the Arab world, East Asia and South Asia, the latter of which is the highest earning social strata in the country. Also interesting is the 'London Effect' in education, whereby the students outperform all other parts of the country, regardless of economic background. Currently 60% of new uni graduates in London are poc, and is set to rise to 75% within 8 years.

Who are these international elite you speak of?
@zupermaus92762 жыл бұрын
@@RM-tj6ju Arabs, Russians, Chinese, Indians, Nigerians, Brazilians - everything from Polish aristocracy to Greek shipping magnates, Russian oligarchs to Chinese entrepeneurs, (real) Ghanaian princes to South African diamond barons, Royal Thais to US billionaires. And all their rich kids. If you want to park money, invest in the neverending London property bubbles, shop in Harrods and all the designer boutiques, and do all the Michelin stars, all of which parasite up to half their annual income from the London 'tourist' season when the rich decamp here July-September. I don't mean tourists.

Actually, according to the 2021 census, Greater London pop is 8.8m, urban pop 9.95m and metropolitan area 14.3m
@zupermaus92762 жыл бұрын
@@simonbeech5421 Yep, but the Census 21 is controversial and come into disrepute - it was conducted midway through a national lockdown, in Covid year when many had decamped, never arrived, wfh or left, from students to staff, immigrants to investors. Boroughs like Camden fell by almost a third between official estimates and counts. It's annoying because for the next decade so much will rest on this, from funding to policy, even product design. I mean we can't deny that hundreds of thousands left the city as staff were jettisoned across entire sectors like hospitality, leisure and the arts, services, retail etc. and immigration all but dried up. Sure it's all bounced back, but too late for the count.

London's population is growing but not all of them are British citizens who were born here. Some of them are on a Long holiday to study/work they might go back to the countries they came originally.
@simonbeech54212 жыл бұрын
You are correct, but that happens all the time, and yet the amount of people moving in to London has been higher than those leaving since the early 1990s and is forecast to continue for the next 10 years. Therefore its population will continue to grow
