This video of Debussy's Clair de Lune contains moonlight paintings by the Victorian painter John Atkinson Grimshaw. I extracted this audio from a vinyl I own using my turntable and I chose the paintings and their order of appearance.
I already had posted a of this recording on my other KZbin channel where I also post my compositions, but the other video shows works by several different painters. I am always searching the internet for new paintings and painters that I have never seen before. I discovered Grimshaw's paintings several years ago and I thought they were astounding. Could not resist the temptation of blending them with this arrangement.
Anyway, in this recording Stanley Black conducts his arrangement of Clair de Lune with the London Symphony Orchestra on the spectacular Phase 4 album "Gems for Orchestra". This vinyl version is not available on CD as far as I am concerned. It is the most moving orchestra version of Clair de Lune I have ever heard in my life (although there are others that are also amazing). In this one the orchestra sounds large and powerful, but the sound is never violent but rather delicate and very expressive. The phrasing is perfect, the tempo is deliciously slow, and the basses have some memorable moments. I believe this was accomplished by the combined talents of the arranger/conductor, the most excellent members of the London Symphony Orchestra, and the people involved in the recording process (the quality of the recording itself borders on the heavenly and sublime).
I am also fascinated by the return of the first theme in minute 3:42; the violins play so delicate and expressively in the high register. I am not sure if the section is reduced in this passage or if the entire violin section is just playing extra-pianissimo. But I have never heard a more effective orchestration of this moment. Other orchestral arrangers use the oboes, or maybe the flutes, and they have their own charm, but the way the soft strings appear here is just breath taking, and then, at the end of the phrase at minute 4:21 the basses have their most spectacular culminating moment. Maybe Debussy did not expect a climax there, but then he never made an orchestra version of this piece. Sometimes different settings demand different approaches to the rendering of an idea.

I agree. The piano just can’t capture all the nuances of this mystical piece. I’ve heard it played many ways. This is close to perfect as I have heard I will they would play that special crescendo part that’s near the beginning more than once. The most beautiful piece of music ever

I feel this iconic piece lost something in the translation to orchestra. The shimmering of the overtones of the piano strings conveys the intangible shimmer of moonlight - the magic of moonlight. The physical shimmer is too elusive and ephemeral for the physical realities of an orchestra, no matter how perfect.

My mother passed away two years ago. I decided to write a memoir about her. Whenever I write, I put on movie soundtracks of emotional music or just compilations of inspirational music. So I'm writing and listening when I decide that the one song I'm listening to needs to be bumped. When I change the song, I see Claire De Lune and I'm so moved by the synchronicity that i decide to go a step further and look up Claire De Lune to see if the song had any meaning or any background information that was interesting. Both my grandmother and mother loved, loved, loved this song and i remember my grandmother playing this piece on the piano. I Googled Claire De Lune and found out that it's very special and spiritual (just like the female matriarchs in my family). Here's what I found: "Clair de Lune, its title French for “moonlight” is based on the poem of the same name by Symbolist poet Paul Verlaine. In both the famed classical music piece and its lesser-known companion, we are taken through a journey to introspection - the lifetime adventure of understanding the soul in all its phases." I don't know what got into me to type all of this personal family stuff to someone i don't even know, but I feel better --so thank you--haha! My bond with my mother with whom I miss so much feels better--or maybe Claire De Lune just told me so. God bless all who read this.

This is the song that has always made me think of only the good, and dreamy parts of this life. The love you share with others. Laying on the cool grass on a summer evening just looking at the stars and listening to the crickets chirp. The breeze gently blowing through the trees, bringing in the smell of rain. My grandma's flower garden, and how it seemed so magical with it's big fat furry bumblebees. Grandma's hands that would dig in the garden, and feed me the best food, and pull me close for a long hug. Sitting on the front lawn with neighbors and watching the fireworks on the 4th of July. Watching my children run and play and laugh. The comfort I feel when I'm in my sweetheart's arms... Nothing but good things with this song. Thank you for posting it. ♥️

He was a real catch lol! I remember us looking down where the water ran off way down below, the part of the music when it gets very deep, reminds me of watching that water run off, which was scary as well as exhilarating . This piece brings such memories of youth and childhood, of love and being loved, when everything was so new and exciting to mind! That's what good music can do!

I’ve had a love affair with classical music since a nine year old boy in a school field trip saw and heard a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Peter and the Wolf. 63 years later that love remains strong. Debussy’s Clare de Lune is a favorite and I can close my eyes while listening and be moved to a wonderful dreamy realm where my heart is warmed as it is enveloped in a soft panoply of colors and sounds. Again thank you Jorge. I close sending my best thoughts and wishes from central Florida. As Christmas is approaching I wish you a joyful Christmas.

Utter brilliance that's bright & colorful, sweepingly gorgeous & exquisitely engrossing, continuously compelling w unrestrained yet refined beauty, sweetly delicate & soft while still strong & powerful, yearning not left unsatisfied, playful & harmonious, pangs of longing soon passionately fulfilled, unapologetically stimulating & desirously driven, enthusiastically pulling you further & further along its musically majestic journey. Bravissimo!!! Quite possibly the most beautiful music ever composed. I love the moonlight paintings that accompany this glorious music. They add so much to the emotions I feel. I've always loved this piece of perfection and even played it on the piano when I was younger. No comparison to this gorgeous rendition. Thank you very much!
