The crime was that the London Building Commissioner allowed highly flammable cladding installation during plan review before the building was built. Just like Grenfell.

@@michaelb2388 rockwool doesn't catch fire or melt until 850C or higher, but it costs more than styrofoam insulation. rockwool is made like candy floss with molten stone, whereas styrofoam uses flammable gases like pentane or butane to expand its bubbles. That's like insulating your wall with bubble wrap filled with petrol.

Was the block empty, like totally empty? People may have been moved out for the refurbishment, but if that's the case just think of their things that have gone up in smoke. I doubt any of them would have fire insurance. If a fund is started for them, give to it. Update: there were residents, it looks like they've all been moved out, but that also means that they've lost everything. The building was being renovated to replace the flammable cladding, which is a horrible irony. As I said, if there's a fund, give to it.

Maybe the cladding issue shouldve been addressed and not left down to the tenants to pay when they didnt order it to be installed........ Also note the materials used are fire resistant not retardant meaning even if they are changed if the fire goes on for long enough or it engulfs the object it will catch alight

Fires safety assessments got shifted to the private sector instead of the public sector. They should be administered by a national body. Instead private companies compete to get building companies to pay them to get their cladding approved for use. Thus there is an incentive for the private companies to skimp on the testing to save money (they do calculations on a computer simulation instead of actually lighting it on fire to see how fast it burns) and there is an incentive to be generous to what they will approve because a company who is strict will not get chosen for the tests so will get less business. It's an insane system that show never have been allowed to happen.

Wrapping buildings in styrofoam with a thin layer of mortar for appearance sake is sadly very common. Here in Canada we are throwing years of fire safety in the toilet by allowing 6 story wood construction because doing it properly with concrete is kind of costly for those poor developers

Flamable plastic they added to the whole surface to cheap looking buildings it has a gap between it and the wall creating a chimney effect shooting the heat and flames up behind it. it gets the fire from the first floor to the 20th in about 20 mins.

Every building the world over was built by the cheapest bidder on everything and anything involved in the project, from the architecture, elevators, electric, drywall, steel. Even building codes are "least best" mainly because of material manufacturers. Make the engineered wood association mad, or the roofing tile manufacturers ..... Go ahead, the better way might cost 50 extra bucks.
