Today I am sharing how I flipped a 90's style orange armoire into a folk art inspired storage cabinet. I've been wanting a piece like this for years but they are upwards of thousands of dollars. Watch as i strip, refinishing and paint the details of this hutch to match the laundry room design we are currently working on.

Have you thought about trying an antiquing wax? It would give it age, tone down the newness of the paint colors, and feed the dry wood. Fun inspo

It might need a clear wax and then a bit of brown wax in the details... ( adds a bit of age and enhances the carving) but I also think it might be the colors. The colors in the folk art painting on the beams might work better. I understand his inspiration and really appreciate how he dives in and goes for it!

especially because acrylic paint is not sun/exposure proof and will change color or fade over time. the cheaper the acrylic the faster sometimes the color even breaks off it is technically liquid plastic so it makes sense.

So, a few naysayers here. Now it's my turn : IT WAS FREE....and the style fits the space. Since it will be seen through the kitchen, I do agree that a white wash followed by a darker wax or stain will provide some finishing that it seems some folks are missing. Personally I was missing the slightest touch of yellow and red....somewhere. Also add some towel racks/holders to the sides and it will be perfect !

I get the look you're going for and I like it better sanded - distressed looking. But I agree that some wax needs to added - especially since it's near the washer. The wax will help prevent the raw wood from getting too much moisture. You might want to make sure the bottom on the floor is sealed too - just in case.

I couldn't be more happy to see you do this almost free thrift flip rather than finding and paying a pretty penny for an actual vintage/ antique folk art hutch. Love the hutch. After I had kids we lived in Tustin. They went to Tustin school district and I worked as an aide for 7 years. In pta all my kids life. I did all the costumes and stage craft for years. Taught kids to sew on buttons and paint and learned to use compound miter saw and more! Myself I kind of like the hutch as is or would have scuff sanded a bit and added a darker gel stain to take down the orange yellow color.

What threw me off initially, was the fact that the wood is so much lighter grain than almost everything else in your home up until now. The folk art painting really works for me in this case. it suits the area and is almost whimsical. I mean, let’s face it four dollars plus the cost of the oven cleaner is not a bad price no matter how you look at it. well done.

I’m painting a table my grandfather built in the early 1900s. Very basic, two shelf half moon with three legs. He made it from pieces of leftover wood and it’s been painted a few times. I’m doing it in green, but will paint designs on edges and maybe do a rub on stencil. Thanks for the inspiration. All edges are flat. When it broke, it pulled the edge from one shelf, but I’ll glue it, fill in as needed and sand. It’s rustic anyway. I just couldn’t get rid of it. My friend is going to put it together for me after it’s done. It’s in 5 pieces which makes for easy repair, painting etc.

As a Swede I love your obsession with our traditional cabinets. See your new piece as a tribute to your trip here ❤️ If you come again you have two places you should go. ”Dalarna” where you would find the most beautiful traditions of wood working, crafting etc. A style you would love to incorporate into your home. Secondly you should go to ”Österlen” being a famous area of the southest part of Sweden. More of a mediterranean vibe… more bohemic, crafty, artistic and rustic. ❤️❤️❤️😍

It is so beautiful with its new lease on life and definitely needs a protective coat especially for a piece that will be in a wet room. I saw someone recommending wax to further age it. But I’m not sure about wax in a humid environment. Maybe, and if so, clear wax first and then a darker wax for more character. Kacha on KZbin is the Queen of adding character to furniture with paint and wax.

Every one is entitled to an opinion on this because everyone has different tastes, that doesn’t mean there is a right or wrong about the end product. It is Drew’s personal taste; he loves it, it is clearly right for him and that is the only opinion that matters. The nice thing about all the preparatory work and the lack of sealing/waxing is that it can be pretty easily be modified as and when his personal taste changes. My opinion? An excellent example of upcycling at its best (and I do rather like the end product as it happens😍😍).

I love it. I took an old coffee table that was my mother’s, she was throwing it away. I stripped it and painted it with her living room colors. When I was done, it looked nothing like the original, but I knew my mother would love it, so I surprised her on her birthday. She said she had never really liked it, but loved the new Version. It was so much fun to paint, but the stripping and sanding was not fun. I can’t wait to see what you do with the rest of the laundry room.

It’s gorgeous. I was waiting for the alteration of the inside to some more shelves for storage of linens.

That was a fun project to watch. Excited to see the rest of the laundry room complete along with hardware to finish off the cabinet.

I think I understand the look that he’s going for, Which is Spanish and really rustic and raw and I think it looks great

You are very talented. I watch your videos because each project has a unique twist to it (unlike some other designers for example McGee & Co. Where every project is just the same lacking creativity, too much repetition). Your projects on the other hand are unique, beautiful and very creative.

So cute! Who would have thought to paint an old TV cabinet like that! Justin is a true friend to help strip & sand. You owe him.

I remember in the late 1980s, both Lowes and Home Depot stores carried raw-pine, "French-style," Mexican-made TV armoires. That piece reminds me of those (I'm talking "before" stage). Now...well, you've transformed that cabinet into a cool "European antique" wardrobe! I love that folk art vibe, and it looks perfect with the era of your home. I have repurposed TV armoires, too, and I like to cut foam board to size and cover it with beautiful fabric to cover the hole in the back, placing it inside the cabinet. Usually friction between the wood and fabric hold the board in place (it's a snug fit), and the shelves do the rest. Can't wait to see how everything comes together. You're the master of turning chicken scratch into chicken salad!

Tip; after spraying it down with oven cleaner, cover it with saran wrap. Let it sit over night. Forgot to say how lucky it was to find this and free😮
