I worked retail for almost 16 years and this lady right here is one of the reasons I was always so nice to my customers. You never know what someone is going through. You might be the only friendly face that someone sees all day. Be kind to each other. Life is too damn short to be hurtful.

I helped a young man pick out clothes for his dad's funeral. I think he was hesitant to ask for help or maybe he didn't want to say out loud why he was looking for clothes.I ended up walking around the men's department to find what he needed. Sometimes people really are having a hard time. I was given the same kind of grace by staff in a couple retail stores when I was picking out clothes for my dad's funeral.

I worked at a grocery store for a long time but we had a very hectic work with tons of customers and only a handful of employees. It always broke my heart when these old people were trying to pick a conversation but we simply didn't have the time. Now I work at health care and it's the same thing. Working people are put on strict time-restraints in this money obbsessed world, leaving everyone unhappy.

Xenon Doro When Kroger started their thing of we will get you out fast it sort messed things up. Employees had to get through with a customer in so many seconds from the time they started the transaction. It was sort of a problem because they were rushing handling my rather expensive organic fruits causing bruising. One of the cashiers who was in her 50s said she felt really bad because when someone who was older had to write a check because she felt like she was rushing them. Even if you picked a line for whatever reason even because you saw a cashier you like to see they would rush you to another line so there wouldn't be too many people in a line. It got so bad with all the line switching and I felt so bad at the time not knowing that my gall bladder was going bad that i refused to change lines one day. I am all about fast service but gosh we need a human connection. To this day I can't stand listening to the Kroger CEO on their commercials saying it is all about the customer. Don't lie just say it is about the money. It would make me feel better.

My little 4 year old granddaughter always says hello to people we pass on the street or down the lane. Some people ignore her which is sad, but older people always talk to her and listen to what she has to say. One old man stopped and spoke to her and the very next day she saw him pas the house. She banged on the window and waved to him. The next day he brought her a cot for her dolly that he had made. He said I was feeling low and she waved to me. It made my day. Now they wave and talk and we made him buns for his tea. It takes a child to break loneliness.

I used to work in a call centre, I would call former customers to remind them that they were due for an updated hearing check. There were so many elderly people that would try and talk to me about other things. A lot of the time I would talk to them. I could tell that they had no one to talk to to and that they were lonely. Other times they would just straight up tell you that they had no one. It would break my heart. I remember distinctly one man talking to me about the olympics for about 20 minutes. It wasn’t a busy day so I spoke with him. It hurts my heart to know that this is a common occurrence.

M.G. Comics Huh? You’re totally missing the point - this woman hasn’t been lonely her entire life, she’s become lonely in her elder years. Social media became predominate around 15 years ago and I’ve seen a noticeable difference in social interactions - kids don’t play in the streets anymore (in the 90s you would see neighborhood after neighborhood with kids playing in the middle of the streets, and they would all run home for dinner when the street lights turned on), people don’t decorate for Halloween and trick or treat like they used to, etc. Social media changes the world for the worse, no one could EVER convince me otherwise.
@FecalMatador4 жыл бұрын
Andy Dietrich you can’t use your experiences as the standard. My area in Texas ALWAYS has kids at the park, of all ages. Halloween isn’t decorated much but Christmas has most houses lit up. Basketball courts at schools are filled after hours with kids playing basketball. Even when I grew up we had the game boy just coming out along with Nintendo 64. We loved those consoles but we still loved going outside and messing around with friends. But I do agree for the most part. Social media is toxic and kills a lot of social interaction.
@MGComics4 жыл бұрын
@@andydietrich3689What? I'm not trying to convince you social media is good or anything at all. I think you're the one missing my point, but I will explain: I'm saying there are other factors in her life. Why doesn't she have any friends? Why doesn't she have anybody? I see lots of older people in my country who still have their friends and talk to them...Wether market, phone, going to see them on the streets helped by their family or even alone. So why doesn't this woman? Is it the country, is it social skills on her society that she doesn't have anybody, is it family in her country tend to turn their back on older people? If she's like let's say 75 yrs now all her young years she didn't even have social media so what? It's not like she needs nor wants Facebook. There is the phone, which all old people I know use a lot. What I mean is there are other factors that affect her and lots of old people who have never had nor used social media 0.0 Besides insecurity in the streets, btw. Also another one of several factors.

It's extremely sad that so many people suffer like this with no-one to love them. I was forced into loneliness because of chronic illness and God gave me the strength to cope with my situation. Loneliness is indeed one of the worst afflictions a person could suffer from and it's more than being alone, it's a loss of your soul.

@Bat Girl I feel like most connections between people is merely to fuel their inner selfishness. They will always want something from each other. I've known only a few people who will get along and be there for you for free. Most of the time there's always a cost associated with it. I hope people would love and care for everyone and everything like they love and care for their loved ones without any discrimination. That would make our society so much better, free from hatred and selfishness. And happy new year to you too. I wish you good luck and health.

I remember when I used to teach 2nd grade. One of my little students refused to leave the classroom during recess because she said that she had no one to play with. So I took her hand and led her outside to the playground. I then said, "Look around. Do you see anyone playing alone?" We spotted a little girl sitting on a bench all by herself. I walked over to the little girl, asked her name, and asked if she would like to have a friend to play with. She said "Yes," and I introduced her to my little student who was lonely. I said to both little girls, "Now you have a new friend to play with. In the future, if you are lonely and do not have anyone to play with, look around and see if there is someone who is sitting alone. Then go over and make friends with them." The two little girls had a lot of fun playing together, and I went back to the classroom and finished grading papers. Older people who are lonely, unless they have social anxiety, can volunteer or join a club that interests them. If they are homebound, they can sign up to conduct wellness checks in which they call other people who are lonely to chat with them.

As a hairdresser I can vouch for the massive amount of people who suffer from loneliness . I actually book out more time so we can have an in-depth, chat, laugh and sometimes a cry. You can feel the warmth in the hugs when they leave the salon. We can and should all make an effort to engage people, even if it's a one off chat in a shop, a quick laugh on a train etc... as it can often be the only human interaction that person will have the entire day and it often leaves you both in a cheerful frame of mind.

@elenawilliams325 ай бұрын
@@jonerasmus9399 Instead of donating to the salon... Maybe buy a/some vouchers for pensioner/s (it's a wee bit cheaper for retired people) for a shampoo/cut and blow wave. They can make an appointment. You could ask at a local retirement home who would best benefit from your kindness and generosity. Also, pick the right salon as some hairdressers are very dismissive of the elderly. I find them super interesting. When you've been on this planet for 70/80+ years... You have some juicy stories to share with me! Good on you mate. Great idea!

This is so true. I use to work in a supermarket when I was 17 year old up until I was 23. I notice that it was the elderly people that would come up and comment on prices of items, new products, relocation of products different packaging of products even they told me what they were going to cook with the product they purchased. Sometimes I would try to brush them off by saying "oh I have to go my boss is waiting for me" but it really breaks my heart knowing that they just wanted to make small talk to make the feel human again. You dont realize this until you get older yourself...and the fact that many elderly people who come into super markets are probably widows and have kids that live far away or have passed on.I can see why there is a minister for loneliness. God bless them all.

Good comment. When I lost my husband, my life radically changed. I'd worked with him and for him for 40 years. Everything stopped. End of. Total nothingness. Eventually, I joined a private online widows group. All ages, and across the social spectrum and the world. Great support and understanding, and sometimes challenging. I'm very close, 7 years later, to a few of them. Re living alone. I, and this is what I'm getting at. The other people who helped me was knowing young people, home alone. They taught me how to think single. Was with my husband from 16 to 60. 40 married years. On you tube, I came across singles, alone and loving it. They have jobs. I don't. So, I'd to change my mindset. 8 months ago, I moved out of our family home into a cottage. One of 24. I love it. Can be alone or meet with similar people. Some don't socialise, though. I have a devoted, crazy Yorkie, as well. Family and friends. It's been a learning curve. Looking back, I wish I'd considered the possibility of aging and becoming alone and planned something. I'm off to visit my next door neighbor. It's rainy so my Yorkie won't come out with me. Lol.

I always talked to her, answering her questions, asking her general questions, and things she has done, just to make her feel like she can always come by and talk to me if she wants. It's a sad world we live in sometimes, we Humans are social animals, our brain becomes depressed after long periods of loneliness and no social interaction. I know we all have our differences, but i wish we can just put them aside, and engage in a meaningful conversation with each other, which is really rare these days, especially with Social Media, which made people even more distant from one another.

To those who concern of her: According to a MSN website: She has a daughter to whom she speaks little to as she lives in a different part of London. She also said that she is making phone calls every once a week to talk to someone from an organization for elderly. And she describes her caller as a 'lovely woman' I still hope she is doing well. I would love to have a chat with her

Please don't blame the victim or tell this woman what she 'should' do. As they get older, people become more and more socially invisible, especially if they are single, retired and living alone. They may not have the money for social activities, or for the same reason they may not have a car. Public transport is not always safe for older people, especially at night. Most social life centres around younger people and their concerns. Older people have a lifetime's worth of experiences to share, but no one is interested. They tend to live quietly, so they attract little attention from their neighbours and easily get unnoticed and forgotten. Like this woman, they rely on scraps of conversation with checkout operators for social exchange, because very few people will make spontaneous friendly conversation with an older person. Also, some people, young or old, are shy by nature and need a little encouragement from others to open up.

I wouldn't want anyone to pray for me because I don't know who they're praying to, but if other people are in need of a voice that would be a good solution. Visiting a congregation and enjoying what you learn or not enjoying it beats a blank. Good old fashion Yankee hug is what I enjoy.

I attend groups in Auckland New Zealand but wondered when I can't drive anymore what will happen? My car broke down and even though my car is always full of people no one asked me to come with them and when I did ask I got lots of excuses why not. So car repaired and no more picking up people and dropping them off. Being used is not nice!

I get lonely sometimes. I’ve been divorced 20 years and live alone except for a cat. My best friend died then my sisters both died. I have a daughter but I don’t want to totally depend on her. I joined a book club, go to church, joined an exercise class, took art classes, and do volunteer work. It’s not a complete cure but it all helps. It also helps to have goals or projects. People need to reach out to each other.

there is a site called Meetup. It is a site where you can join different interest groups in your area and there are a few singles groups but interest groups are the majority. There is no cost to join and you can set how far you want to travel. Everything from meetups to go out to dinner, see movies, walking , crafts, etc. I started going to a couple before I ended up co organizing for one group. You don't always makes friends but you can have some pleasant conversation. I have one younger friend who I go to concerts nowwith. She was nervous to go to a concert by herself. That is how that started. It is an international meetup site.

That’s a great idea, I used to attend those meet ups when I was feeling down some years ago. It’s great just to converse with folks. It can be very stressful being lonely, especially after a breakup and children leaving the nest, we all go through various transitions in life and I feel everyone should have someone to talk to about things and also to be a good listener for others as well.

I'm so sorry. Just know, this isn't permanent! Can you volunteer somewhere? There's lots of activities to join in school ... There's also a huge chance of meeting life long friends if you get involved in any sport. I showed and trained Arabian horses and their riders. I started Karate. I began fencing épée.... I also talked my way into playing on a men's volleyball team. I mention these things because they're not 'normal' activities I guess. I'm hoping that something I've mentioned, might get you thinking of other means of interacting with people, in areas not associated with school. If you like horses, you can volunteer to walk the horses after their workout, to cool them down. Or getting horses ready for their owners to ride... I don't know what area you live in, but there's all sorts of places that would love to have a young woman around contributing! One piece of advice ... Don't volunteer for anything you don't enjoy! They say (whom ever 'they' are - lol), that if you like what you do, it won't ever feel like a job. What about dance classes maybe? Church? If I was your big sister, I'd tell you to 1) go get a new haircut (it always makes you feel prettier) 2) make a list of your interests 3) volunteer in places that are related to what you want to do as an adult. Don't worry if you don't know what you want to be when you 'grow up'. I didn't find my passion until I was thirty five! 4). always listen to your gut (we have internal antennas for a reason), 5) don't let others bring you down or try and talk you out of changing things up (cuz they will). Stay strong and focused sweetheart. Being your age is sometimes tough, but it does get a lot better! Big hugs from the West Coast! Keep your chin up - you can do this! 👇💪💟👇🌹🌸🌻🌺🌼🌻💐

What i notice from lots of people in the comment section and in day to day life is the amount of ignorance towards loneliness. Some people are like '' just join a club'' just join a church or go meet some people. It is not that easy in this growing unapproachable world. Lots of people around the world are suffering with true forced loneliness. If you don't know what that means it's a feeling that your self esteem and self worth is so low you can't meet people. There is a huge epidemic of younger people under 40 (I'm one of them) suffering with the negative effects of bullying in their youth that causes it and then of course there are the older people who have lost spouses, and have retired and feel so lonely and worthless they feel like nobody even wants to converse with them. Then there are people with all kinds of disabilities that get discriminated against. There is more pain out there than one thinks. I have met people throughout my life who seemed shocked and surprised that there are people among them who have no friends. The ignorant person tends to put blame on the lonely person and think they did something bad or there is a good reason why a person does not have any friends and truth is the friendless person is completely innocent. They are living in a cruel world full of cliques and shallow people who really have no room to meet more people. We have a financial class problem out there also that is causing it too. Rich snooty people only want to talk to other snooty people like themselves. Attractive self assured people only seem to want to talk to other attractive people. Bad people only like talking to trash like themselves. Etc Etc Etc. Loneliness is a very rough thing for many and please do not judge people for having social problems, being single and friendless. Don't tell people to go to therapy or join some club. The best thing you can do is just say ''Hi'' to someone and be nice to them. You just might make their whole day.

I totally get what you're saying as I have suffered from social anxiety too and always get super anxious when I go to new places or have to meet a whole group of new people. However, I realised that this is a prison that I built in my mind. I have the key to freedom in my hand. Hence I try to push myself a little harder to overcome my shyness. I believe it's each individual's own responsibility to overcome their past hurt and change their lives for the better. And just as you said certain people like hanging out with their kind only, there are people that share your interests too. You just need to figure out how and where best to meet them. And you are also right of course that we all need to be kinder to each other and make this world a better more welcoming place for all people 😊

Try volunteering. I found myself in a city a number of years ago and I knew no one. I was also quite ill so I became Isoated (my family members all died quite young - immediate and extended). It took time and I tried a number of things, but eventually I found a few wonderful people who care deeply about me here and you don't need a lot of friends, just a few. I met one joining the Finance committee at my church (I know nothing about finance!). The others I met because I had volunteered for something and my name was on a list and they contacted me for something and we are great friends now. I still have my days but I am finally able to go back to work. So if you can't work, do something that matters to you. Try the "Meetups" groups on the internet -- they have something for everyone.
