I got a pension paid out from the army in 1967, I was booted out due to a perforated eardrum on the ranges, I’d not long joined too, I was 16, 6 weeks later I got £254, that’s equivalent to £4-5 k today, I went ballistic, I was living with my friend and his mum, my folks didn’t want me around, it was the summer of love, in 4 months I’d blown the lot, on myself and friends, what a waste, but I did enjoy it, and YES, getting a lot of money at that age isn’t good for you. I’m wiser now, that’s for sure

The National Lottery is ultimately a tax on the poor. It's predominantly low income households who participate in "longshot" gambling, so creating and running the National Lottery is the perfect way to levy an extra tax on the poor without them even realising it. Sure the income funds good causes (like top-level athletes, the arts, etc), but what does it say about our country when those good causes would be left high and dry if this single source of income stopped tomorrow. It's a classic case of all social classes benefiting from the arts, athletics, etc, but the poor are largely being left to pick up the tab.
