Amazing how this girl can phrase this song eight times in exact the same way, so that people can hear the difference in preamps. (lol)

Charli’s vocals sound classic and timeless. I love how she does not ruin it with the current “flavor of the day, boil in a bag” modern vocal style.

VP-26 feels like it has more presence in the 1k range ... which I like. The VP312s is a bit warmer than the others to that point. The Heider FD312s is the sweetest so far, IMHO.

VP26 is my fav. It has such an amazing detail that is transparent and BIG. I think VP312-Platinums come in second, has more low end with some light compression. Some of the others just had too much sheen on them. Too much sparkly unicorn in the upper mids.
@PHELCAN

The 312 knocked it out of the park for me, the VP26's sounded more modern and clear but were missing a certain "weight" and "down to earth" tone that I felt the 312 had. The platinums added noticeable sheen as well

I have 3 CAPI pres I have built and really love. But in Nashville a couple weeks ago, I got to do the on hands comparison of the kits vs. the Platinum line. They all are amazing and exceptional value for the money, but the Platinum versions were better. Not only are they pre-built, the designs have been refined and elevated. You can hear the difference, but I don't think you go wrong with either.

I preferred the VP312 Platinum, here. It was well balanced and also felt very flattering. the VP28 felt a bit stuffy to me on her voice. That one stood out to me as not a good match.

As far as the preamps go, I think I liked the VP28's response the best. It had a clean fullness and small amount of grit without being overly bright or presence biased in a particular area, at least with her voice.

I'm a bit astonished about the frequency balance of the acoustic guitar. How come these microphones reproduced this instrument with so little body and bass? The strings had a tinny timbre to it, since the high mids were not supported by solid fundamentals. This creates sort of a narrow-band listening experience. Weak lows and peaky mids.
@rrrafiel
@rrrafiel 2 жыл бұрын
Mic technique is clearly at fault here. Either that or they decided to make the guitar stand back, but I think that's a mistake.

As absolutely gorgeous as these recordings are, it is so hard to judge these preamps based on this. 8 different takes when the differences between these preamps is already so minuscule makes it super hard to compare. I would love it if you guys demonstrated all of these on the 2-bus OR with reamped stuff. I want to hear how everything saturates when really pushed too! If anyone wants to dig further into some shootouts with CAPI gear I did a blind shootout here between a VP26 and a some Audient pres (level matched): www.gearslutz.com/board/so-much-gear-so-little-time/1143635-capi-vp26-audient-asp880-b.html And I did a test with saturation here between the VP26 and LOLA (not level matched, just examining tones when pushed): www.gearslutz.com/board/so-much-gear-so-little-time/1286812-driving-preamp-audio-examples-capi-vp-26-hairball-lola.html

Great A/B test you did with the Audient pres and Capi, i have Audient pres and Bae 1073, i think i might have to add a VP26 with Red dots, brighter guitars dont gel that well with the Audient for my taste. I really liked how the VP26 sounded on your strummed Acoustic guitar. May i ask what Acoustic guitar you used in the test ? I have some great sounding guitars for finger picking but im still not satisfied with what i got for strumming Thanks :)
@danielmiller5521
@danielmiller5521 3 жыл бұрын
@@Jonny._. Strumming is really hard to track, it can easily sound harsh. The guitar here is a D18, but I sold it, didn’t love the sound. Had a $100 Yamaha sitting around for a year with silk and steel and tuned it down a step, best sound for me. Super mellow. Tracking with compression is key though and with fast attack times to shave off the transients that are usually offensive. The 26s are great on acoustic, but it’s not until adding compression after the pre that you really hear the zip of a transformer pre. Sometimes that doesn’t make the 26 the right fit and a cleaner pre is called for. Do you track with compression?
@Jonny._.
@Jonny._. 3 жыл бұрын
@@danielmiller5521 I ended up selling my D-18 too, it was a bit boomy and not very balanced and that made it hard to record it well for me. Now i have two well balanced beautiful sounding guitars wich works great for finger picking and finger strumming on one of them(with short nails), but i have still not found a guitar that strums well enough with a plectrum for me to be impressed. I think i might take look at the Yamaha FS30, it sounds pretty darn good from what im been able to hear from KZbin clips from different reviewers. Thank you for your answers :)

Probably everyone but me, knows why different microphones are used (and there's plenty of them here!) and not to deter from Miss Charli's great vocals... is there any place to learn what's up? I see different mic.s in different videos and have no idea why or what's up? I would read if I had links- but surely don't get the types, ranges, applications very well - and this video deepens the confusion! Sure sounds nice though,

Kevin Morin people do this to either mix them together or, more often, pick their fav during mixing. Sometimes use one on vrs another on chorus. The big green one is an ELA M 251, very very expensive large diaphragm mic, the black one is a dynamic mic, $400 Shure Sm7b, they both have very different sounds so can be beneficial during a recording to capture two vibes so you have options later. Hope that helps
@clementyeboah4042
@clementyeboah4042 3 жыл бұрын
@@strazza555 It's called ''Mid-Side'' M/S technics. Capturing the ''Mid and the Side'' with very different two microphones sound, so can be beneficial during the mix if you desire to widen the vocals by pushing the ''Side fader above the Mid''. The 1960's and the '70's were master of this technics. Thanks

@@clementyeboah4042 Sorry but this is not a M/S setup, the ELA seem to not be in the position for the figure 8 pattern to be activated. It is only unidirectional in my view it was only two different mic setup to pick and choose on the mix, perhaps combined tho!

So if I had to pick one for the guitar and vocals is would be the VP312 Platinum. For her voice though the choice would be between the VP26 Platinum or the Heider FD312s Great voice it would be hard to screw it up with any of these preamps.

The 28plats sounded best to me during most of her vocals, but they got hit a hair too hard on a couple of her louder notes imo. Maybe even just 1 step down on the gain would be *chefs kiss*

Thanks for the post. I really find the sound of the guitar weak (but it's not the preamp), so i won't make any jugement on it. On vocal, VP26 is a clear winner for me, 25 is a bit flat for that, and still not liking the adds of extrat circuit in the VP28.
