Its honestly not too confusing from my experience, i went to japan with basic knowledge in the language and was able to buy food for the 3 weeks i was there. Alot of the restaurants are your typical walk-in-sit-down type. Theres even restaurants where you dont even have to speak to a waiter if you like. A handful of good restaurants either use vending machine ticket exchanges (where you purchase what you want/how much & pass the ticket onto the chef) or electronic menus.

@@martinnguyen5690 I dont remember being taxed more or having a fee for a table, unless it was a reservation, so i cant exactly quote on that. Though from what i can gather the bill usually states any form of tax or gst, the places i ate at werent relatively small but they were in major cities that were somewhat common tourist areas. There are some restaurants and stores that have signs that state tax can be charged/tax free etc. But scammy practices can occur in any country, maybe i was just lucky not to encounter it. Sorry for not helping much, but this was just my experience within the Tokyo, Dotonbori and Osaka areas.

@@martinnguyen5690 Typically in izakaya/small bar/pub style restaurants, they have “otoshi” (which is what the guy at the restaurant was explaining), where it’s usually a table charge of $1-3 per person. There are some small restaurants that also require everyone to order one drink per person as well. Often the indication of otoshi will be them giving you a small appy (ex. Tiny mashed potato) as soon as you sit down. More commercial style places (non-pub vibes) won’t have this.

I believe it was a table charge or service fee. Basically the restaurant charged them before hand so they don’t waste space in case they didn’t order anything. It was 500 yen so like 4 or 5 dollars. Not really a big deal.
