We got to see Boxcar Willie at his theater in Branson, back in 1986. He was great and it was a great experience! He did his Willie Nelson spoof too, and it was hilarious!

That Lonesome Whistle used to get me to running just to the Train that ran below the Hill I lived as a child growing up. Even as an adult I still love that sound. Boxcar Willie was the best at imitating that "Lonesome Whistle." God Bless You.

I miss the sound of the train coming through the valley and watching the head light glide along the far side of the crick at night as I lay in bed . I wish I could go back but like they say , you can never go back home once you leave .

if you love this music hold onto it. this music is dead in the times we live in. i love this music. the outlaws were pure gold. all of the great music has already been made. if you were ever privileged to see one of the outlaws walk up to a hot mic with nothing more than a guitar and captivate an entire arena, consider yourself lucky. you'll not see this again in this lifetime.

I will go to my grave saying that American country and western music is the purest form of expression humans have seen in thousands years. It’s incomparible to anything else, it’s like if emotions had sound.

We were a little bit poor so we lived by "the tracks". The "whistle" was part of my growing up. I love the singers and songs about this kinda stuff...
@carolynjones64576 жыл бұрын
webspyder I lived above them, they are gone now and a Subdivision has taken their place. Now, ( Due to a Wildfire the last part of the Denver and Rio Grande Narrow Guage Railroad,) could be taken out of the County I live in, the Train is being blamed for for starting the Wildfire, despite the Owners taking every precaution to prevent it from happening. God Bless You.

When I was really young the tracks were just across the field. I still remember the steam engines leaving town picking up speed spewing smoke and steam. At night we could see the fires in the bush from the hobos. In the daytime my 3 older brothers and I would visit them. They were polite and friendly. My mother never worried about us because we had a big dog.

There was a Conrail track in my back yard as a kid. It cut through the middle. Sometimes they'd just stall for days and we'd crawl under them to get to the other side of the yard. 🤫

I was born in Harlan County Ky. Before I was in school I lived in a valley that had an elevated railroad along side a river. It was elevated 18 feet to kept it from flooding when we had a lot of rain, which drained from all of the valleys and hollows upstream from us. Our house was one of five about 2 feet above the river. But the coal train was much, much more important than us. We heard them day and night. I grew to love the lonesome sound of that whistle. Visiting relatives couldn't sleep without being awakened many times every night. When we moved away (before being washed away), I missed that whistle so much I couldn't sleep. Years later When I was in High school they started playing Lonesome Whistle on the radio, I told my mother the person who wrote that song sat on our front porch all night. That huge, ugly machine blocked my horizon and It's very, very ugly black smoke blocked out our world, If the wind was wrong. But my memory only wants to hear that sad soothing whistle. Thanks for letting me ramble, .
