Realism is more about material properties and physical light. Huge amounts of crispy uniform noise in textures and burning "deep contrast", which cuts away half of the tone spectrum, are making it look just more grungy. Naturally when you increase the levels of contrast you should compensate it by lowering saturation in the dark end of the tone spectrum. This is what happens in real life - the less photons are reflected from an object, the fewer colors you can make out. Which is why during the twilight everything seems faded, not burnt and oversaturated. And the other thing - in real environments light bounces off the objects and scatters through substances. Just another reason why you will never see totally black shadows in real life.

In my opinion all these contrast tweaks lower the realism by a lot and make the game look more cartoony. Also what's up with everyone raising the sharpness on objects and calling that realistic? I think this utterly destroys the textures if the mod doesn't provide new ones specifically made for a sharpness filter...

Thank you… I already use the most of these mods, but nice to see which reshade and ENB I can use. A bit of green looks very nice… I would also add the following mods: Enhanced Blood Textures -by dDefinder (Very extensive scripted blood overhaul + hi res textures) FogOut -by g10stpd (removes the extra distance fog, but only while clear weather- radiant clouds and fog isn't affected in any way. Fog around mountains and in valleys will not disappear.) True Storms - Wasteland Edition (Thunder-Rain-Weather Redone) -by fadingsignal (It's a complete overhaul to the storm systems in Fallout 4, including new heavy and unique weather) Thanks for sharing your mod-knowledge!

I just notice the difference, so I'm sharing. I'm an artist. I didn't say I was a doctor or a nuclear physicist. I'm sure there are plenty of other artists who know exactly what I'm talking about. They apply surrealism. It's an effect of shape and contrast. You attempt to have something appear not as it is, but as you might interpret it subconsciously. You basically just use shape in shades that communicate your own creative perception of what something "could" look like, rather than what it might actually look like.

Great video. Glad to find someone making an effort to cover this as a subject. I would recommend refining the language of your commentary. It feels quite wordy and slow as if it is an essay. I realise that there is a value in emphasising that your words are merely your point of view - but i felt like this slowed things down. I also felt like the intros and outros were similarly overly complicated in how they were woreded. I definitely enjoyed your video and ill stick a round for a few more videos. I think simpler commentary would help with the pacing and make flow of the video smoother. I hope you don't mind my crtisims and that you keep making content regardless of whether you agree with this comment.

Very impressive list! Using all of these actually burned out my old GTX 760, leaving that lovely electronic smoke smell.. but the card was nearing its end anyways. :\ Just upgraded to an Asus GTX 970 Turbo. :D Regardless, I really enjoyed the video and I'm now using almost every mod from this list, thank you!

Use this setup with Photorealistic Commonwealth or Decent PLUS. It looks much nicer, and is closer to being 'realistic'. If it's too washed out for you, try Vivid or Vogue ENB. If it's not washed out enough, try Cinematic Film Looks or PILGRIM.

tbh i think vanilla looks quite nice, just wish there was a brightness option. also a crime system and proper weapons on back like in the trailer so any weapon mod works then fallout 4 would of been excellent cuz the prison system add more then people think

*Way* too dark and contrasty. For scenes still daytime, you're looking at an object's side facing you that is in shadow, and it's deep black dark. Would you really not see the surface frigging daytime? It's just bad. I don't see how so many people like it! (Like/dislike ratio)

+GaborBartal I have to agree...most of these changes just add contrast and darkness. Textures look like they were ran through basic Photoshop poster filter and the lighting burrows even the noon light into summer evening shade. But to be fair I have a suspicion that LoneVaultWanderer (and others) is probably using different monitor settings which may alter his experience a lot. I am generally having brightness quite down so where he may still see lots of details I see only darkness. So I don't want to criticize. The video is nicely done I just have different personal taste.

Another shit enb/reshade combination. Whenever i see one with dark shadows/completely dark characters i look out the window and realise you people dont really go outside if you think its "ultra realistic". I tried color correction and subtle enb, made everything dark, so i ended up using only subtle, less is more sometimes. Btw i dunno whats the complain about fo4 vanilla graphics, imho it looks really good, maybe te textures arent that awesome, but the lighting makes up for it. No offense anyway... but weve seen better

If you have an AMD GPU, you can set godrays to ultra to get rid of the blocky anti-aliasing, then set tessellation to 16x in the Radeon Crimson driver Fallout 4 settings. This lets you keep godrays but cut down on the performance hit. I'm sure you can probably do this with the nVidia driver too.

I think the reason that they might have added the god rays into the game is because of a messed up ozone layer. Since this game is set in the future, we don't know if there were larger nuclear weapons that had been manufactured, so I'd like to believe that all the nuclear explosions (because they (hypothetically) are bigger than nukes today) might have messed of Earth's ozone layer, which would let in a lot more energy from the sun.

The cloud mod is absolute shit. It actually looks worse. Clouds look like bad photoshop cut-outs. They should have made the cloud edges semi transparent via gradient mask (yes fuckload of work). Clouds look especially bad during sunset and sunrise when the light angle is steep, almost as if they had drop shadow effect on the edges. So vanilla clouds look actually much better. Look at the clouds in witcher 3, that is how clouds should fucking look like. Reshade is way too strong, too. Yes sun creates strong contrast but this is way too strong.

It's so realistic that everything is so dark (like my future) even on sunlight..... But some of these mods are pretty cool though :)
