It's great. I would also use the story stick you made with the jig to mark the hinge positions on the door rather than off up the door to the frame.

Your mdf jig saved me a lot of time when fitting 8 doors in my son's house! I then made another jig for drilling out the latch and handle holes - so much easier than measuring on each individual door!

Hi Robin, I don’t want to come over as a know it all, there is a lot of things I don’t know and a lot of things that I have discovered from watching your videos, but hinge placement with a router is so easy that I thought everyone would know that and make a throw away jig every time they were hanging a door. Having an aluminium one would stop me from throwing it away and it is pretty.

I used to test different jigs for a company one was a hinge jig made from laminate, had peg holes in for different size hinges and attached to door frame using awls. Great little bit of kit it was. Sold loads to joiners doing hotels apartments etc

hi robin . why dont u just use a trend hinge jig ??? its doses exactly the same thing all read made and ready to use
@ukconstruction2 жыл бұрын
There is lots of reasons, and I also have one... but there are many times where you have to match existing cut outs and setting up the Trend takes to much time, you have to use a specific cutter and guide bush etc and it's about 6 x the price of my simple hinge jig, it also requires you to make three hole in the door or frame with its bradawls etc and for a pre finished walnut door for example this is counter productive..

Fitted 18 XL oak veneered doors into existing linings using your jig saved loads of time, however XL using nails in door construction destroyed a TS55 blade.

Thanks for the comment and also supporting me buying a hinge jig!! most new doors from all manufacturers use some metal staples in the internal construction of their doors normally these are positioned so you will not catch them if you are only trimming their recommended amount from the edges etc pretty hard when you are making new doors fit old linings I usually keep a couple of cheaper blades and use these in a few passes when I have to cut out side of the manufacturers recommended amounts.

Why didn't you make a story pole for the doors since all the hinges are equal on the jambs? Great video. You could had just reused the story pole you had for the jambs only set a stop to allow for the drop at the transom could you not have. I like your metal jig.
@denty322 жыл бұрын
Just add a 2 mm packer at the top of the original storey pole when he fixes it to the liner.
@TheSaintemplar64 Жыл бұрын
@@denty32 Yep, Chippies know all this stuff tbh. the only problem with an adjustable storey rod, it is only reading the corner of the frame which isn't 100 percent true and can give a false set. I used to work with a chippy years ago, we called him Jigs and Fixtures and made jigs for everything including this. What crossed my mind, was why he didn't just chop all the door hinges in and offer them up to the frame. But yes, i have done that with 2mm 3mm packer

Love the idea of a bearing cutter for the door so the jig cut out is actually the hinge size. Just out of interest why did you remove the corners with the jig in place as a chisel guide on only one hinge ?

Hi.robin I've seen that you've used skeleton hinge jig b4,do you not rate it,as you have made your own and full.hight jigs yourself in your latest video Thanks
@ukconstruction Жыл бұрын
I did always use the skeleton jig, but it takes some time to fiddle with to get right and if you are hanging new doors in old frames and re using the hinge positions etc it can take time to change it around etc, I wanted something that would fit in the router box with the router and be much quicker and simpler and the simple hinge jig that we make and sell did the trick!
