Tip: anything you see in the anime, is in the game, ANYTHING, from the guns, the cars, the weapons, the cyberwares (even David sandvistan is in the game) and espcially the places, you can literally visit any place in the game, Lucy apartment is in the same building as Judy apartment, also, Keanu Reaves is one of the most important characters in the game, all the time with you.. When folks said that this is the best adaptation of a videogame, they aren't kidding, Edgerunners literally puts you inside the game. Props for Trigger and CDPR, they instead of do a 1x1 adaptation of the game, or even worst, tried to reinvent the wheel, simply got the wheel and roll on another street of the city.

In regards to your foreshadowing criticism, If you played the game and knew the universe of cyberpunk it's foreshadowing enough already, it's a core theme, death is hardly ever a plot twist in night city. There is no reason to ever try to hide it. What I can tell you is no matter how much I predicted I was never ready for it when they finally happened and that speaks volumes to the show. It's not about plot twists and a happy ending, it's about the journey and how you choose to go out. "A happier ending? For folks like us? Wrong city, wrong people."

I think the reason she mentions "he's the guy who jumps into the fire" is because she's trying to explain why she's distancing herself from him, maybe she's had experiences of trying to become friends with people who just end up dying, so she's trying to protect herself because she has a high suspicion he's the type of person to sacrifice himself.

I strongly advise you to rewatch that final scene with your brain off and not stop it, you are right, it's a genius one and it hit HARD emotionally. Had to learn to shut my brain off myself, always overthinking things the same way but ultimately it's an avoidance style coping mechanism to avoid feeling things. It makes us miss on our emotional richness. As for the foreshadowing, well, this is cyberpunk, you don't get remembered by how you lived but by how you died.

I feel like it’s a depressingly common part of cyberpunk, to the point that it’s often a core theme, that you know from the outset that the main character won’t get a happy ending or necessarily a satisfying one, but it will at least be cathartic. Your characters are all rebelling against a society in a way that really won’t make a big difference, and whatever they gain from it won’t satisfy them. You just keep running the gauntlet until you die or fade into obscurity. So really it isn’t a big deal giving that kind of foreshadowing when it’s really just a given.

David flat out refused to train with a gun and yet when Lucy was in danger he ran right up to that cyberpsychos face and pulled the trigger. He didn't think, he just moved. This, he's the type of guy that would jump into a fire to save anyone, even if he's gonna get burned. Let's face it, he was by far the worst equipped to deal with a cyberpsychos out of the bunch but he got the job done, shocking everyone at the same time. Foreshadowing or not, she knows David well enough at this point to actually say it and it NOT come out as foreshadowing. He's proved time and time again by getting Rebecca out of the shit that he's capable of sacrifice. And in Night City, people like him are almost extinct.

Over all my years of watching anime, I somehow missed the foreshadowing. I also loved your commentary on how scenes were shot since I’m currently taking film production classes in high school. Im currently rewatching the anime to see any details I possibly missed.
@lostsoulrunner92 Жыл бұрын
Ive rewatched this anime so often. SO very often. And im even coming back to your older videos cuz i have free time to watch things. And you're the only person who talks about things on this level. I'm proud to be here. Apart of this. I know you've watched this by now, so the foreshadowing is a double subserversion. Theres so much hidden in the early parts of the show that hits different by the end, its exactly what it is. A runaway train, that doesnt stop, until everything crashes. David (in my eyes) Didn't save anyone from the fire. Not even lucy. Even her fire died, her dream wasn't what it used to be, the moon meant nothing. This anime is beautiful in a sense of just what this world of cyberpunk is. A meat grinder. And that its a wild thing that this "IS" a slice of life. This is what life is like daily. How insane it is, how a guy with a mini nuke on his arm can just misfire it into an apartment and kill everyone in it, gang members just rolling up to random civilians. Gatting out a car at each other with no care. But the wild violent moments are nonstop, constant happenings all over, and the moments of reflection and who you are are shown are the rare ones, the breaks from reality, and it all can come crashing down. No matter how strong you are or who you are. Its fucked up, but the moments of the breaks from reality are so... so nice to me.. In a world where you struggle to find anyone to care. In real life or in somewhere like cyberpunk, a true dystopia, I cherish those moments. I find solace in em.. I love this show, and i know its rough and super fast, but its genuinely one of my favorite animes ever made.

Loving these reactions, as for the foreshadowing, its core to the genre that is cyberpunk, I don't think its a writing mistake in the same way I wouldn't consider it a writing mistake in a classical tragedy, Lucy pointing it out here is just one of the bell tower gongs in what is an extremely drawn out death scene that is the genre. I get the feeling of being spoiled, but some stories aren't about the reveals, they're about the quality of the journey.

"If you're lookin for a happy ending. Wrong crew, wrong city" -J.Silverhand The predictability of the inevitably IS the cyber punk genre. You, like David, are just a small cog in a massive corporate machine. I think the foreshadowing in this episode is perfect. It encapsulates the human condition. Even though we can often see our paths of destruction. We choose emotion, we choose each other. In a world where we replace the very flesh of our own bodies, our temples. With serial numbered cold metal she chooses David, she chooses to be human.

For me, I took it as Lucy being surprised that David was willing to go that far for someone. The group’s been giving him the tough love treatment. His constant refusal to pick up that iron shows David ain’t ready to step over that edge just yet. For this gonk to straight up zero that short circed scop. Yeah, that’s surprising to her. I know I am both late and also that the other comments talk about this alot, but one part I think they only touch upon slightly is that it's supposed to spoil it. The whole point of cyberpunk is knowing ahead of time where you're going to end up, doing everything you can to fight against it or bargain your way out of it, and meeting the same end either way. Not just in this universe, but the entire cyberpunk genre is about tragedy. Most people knew going into this exactly what was going to happen, but over time you build up the emotions and start bargaining or fighting against or just not believing they'll do it. It's about the struggle, going out with the biggest bang, extending the biggest middle finger on your way out. We always knew he was going to die and probably for who, how and for what reasons, but the arc was about finding out the why. What gets him and us invested. Reminds me of the dichotomy between fear, horror and terror. Most people are used to the "whats happening right now" (i.e. spoilers and what happens) type of storytelling and this is the "waiting for it to happen and the emotional aftertaste when its over" Like seeing the future and the past but not the present. I'm rambling, anyway, it was excellent storytelling, just not whats "traditional" in tropes.

I'm writing this comment as you're on the "bad foreshadowing" part and I'm writing this knowing you already finished the series btw so if anyone else hasn't finished there's major spoilers ahead. Let me just give my point of view as someone who played the game first, in the game, the Afterlife bar there's the tradition to name drinks after the "legends" of night city who died while making a name for themselves, ever since the game's release in Dec 2020, going to the bar you could order a "David Martinez", and also in the show itself the opening ends with David's silhouette getting shot in the head by a humanized representation of Night City, so as for how foreshadowing goes, this scene is actually a good one imho, since at least they present it in a way that he sacrifices himself saving someone making him look as a pyrrhic hero which I like a lot more, unlike the opening credits and the drink which are much more vague or abstract. This is just my opinion though so feel free to debate.

So, to explain Cyberpsychosis a bit. Some people are naturally more predisposed to going psycho than others, but trauma and other mental issues also play a factor. On the tabletop your ability to handle Cyberware is determined by a stat called "Humanity", so the higher your Humanity score the more Cyberware you can install without going psycho. The catch is that installing Cyberware also lowers your Humanity score, as does significant trauma, and the only way to regain Humanity is to scale back on the Cyberware and/or go through an ample amount of therapy. And yes, that does mean that on the tabletop, if you install as much Cyberware as you physically can given your Humanity score, you put yourself at risk for Cyberpsychosis, because you're "running along the edge" and just a little bit of trauma could push you over. If that happens, you no longer control your character and the GM takes control as your character goes on a rampage, even attacking your teammates. David already must have an abnormally high Humanity score to begin with, amplified by a lack of significant trauma. As you said, he's just a baby basically. Sure his mother dying was tragic, but up until that point he hadn't had to deal with any truly traumatic experiences.
@OMNIhydra12 жыл бұрын
To be fair to the foreshadowing, the shows OP does end with David getting shot in the head. This show doesn't shy away from telling you things are not gonna end well. They can't. Their world doesn't let people have happy endings.

Great video! Very informative as. I don't agree with the foreshadowing part because Lucy is essentially wrong about him with that take... she says he's the kind of person that will jump into a fire to save anyone even if he gets burned, and that's clearly not true. In the first episode he walks right past a guy getting mugged at shotgun point, and just a gallery of human tragedy general, and doesn't even flinch... it's not unless the world threatens something he loves... like his mom, or his new family, that he goes above and beyond.

The setting of Cyberpunk kind of expects the world around the character to burn. The overall theme of Night City in general is being remembered for the destination and not the journey, which is very antithetical to a lot of what common anime do. They always make the journey and the struggle matter more than the end because there is this expectation that everything ends up okay. Night City chews you up and makes you a dirty gum stain upon the pavement. You don't think about where the gum came from or who chewed it up, but you recognize that it's there and pass it up leaving yours somewhere else... unless you are civilized individual and throw away your gum properly of course, but nobody notices those who do.

I'm late to this and I know you've finished the show, but I thought I'd give my two cents on the foreshadowing topic regardless. I didn't take it as the show wink wink nudge nudge-ing the viewer about David's ultimate fate. But showing that Lucy already knows how this plays out. People like David cannot survive in Night City. She put her walls up around him because she doesn't want to fall for a doomed man. While I don't think that the viewer is necessarily expected to know that David will die, I don't think they hide it either. Even apart from the intro clues, almost everyone around him constantly warns David that he isn't as special as he thinks he is. He is not exempt from the rules of life in Night City. But he doesn't listen. He is stubborn, reckless, and frankly delusional. That combined with his genuine kindness and empathy makes for a doomed man. As an extra meta-narrative point (which I think is fair to bring up since you also talked about a lot of film language), this is a Cyberpunk story. Not the game, specifically, but the storytelling genre. The cyberpunk setting is always a late stage capitalist dystopia. And a less obvious consequence of that dystopia than blatantly evil corporate oppression is the destruction of genuine interpersonal connection. Every interaction becomes transactional and emotional investment in other people is always punished. Maine knows this and warns David not to rely too much on the team since the only thing you can count on is yourself. Lucy knows this and tries really hard to block out her feelings for David because she knows it will only get her burned. Kiwi clearly exemplifies this mindset. The 2077 game reinforces this concept at every turn. But David doesn't fit in with this. He is compassionate, selfless, empathetic and optimistic. He is the kind of character that will always get eaten alive in a cyberpunk world. On top of this, cyberpunk narratives pretty much always show that it's too late to affect any kind of change. You can try really hard to fix the world, at that point, but it's too far gone. These stories are all cautionary tales, warning us, as viewers, to make necessary societal changes NOW, while we still can. It's too late for David or anyone else in that story to make a difference. It's not about "will he succeed?" but instead "how far will he get before the system inevitably shuts him down?"

i mean the foreshadowing is all in the intro. they arent spoiling or shying away from shit.

A little fact that'll probably make you like Lucy more: her Japanese VA is the same as Rita Rossweisse and Lumine 🙃

Speaking of foreshadowing though, nothing is as foreshadowing as the Opening.

It’s unfortunate that there’s not supposed to be a cathartic payoff. One of Cyberpunk’s core themes is people dying, for both good and bad reasons. Meaningful and meaningless. But inevitable. It’s going to happen, and we just get to watch. You live fast, and die young

Yeah, you kind of ruined last scene for yourself. It's not really a good idea to dive into structure and all this shit, makes the story too mechanical and distracts you from emotion the scene trying to convey. Foreshadowing is foreshadowing, it can't spoil anything, it's trying to tell you something cause you'll benefit from knowing it, that's all.

Oh, you might want to check out Asates warhammer 40k. 1 guy made it.

That too obvious foreshadowing I think is just a shortcoming caused by the limited number of episodes.

^^ yeah I’m actually also a bassist. I like death core too but the genre died out pretty hard since 2013 LOL fave death metal bands Chelsea Grin and Kublai Khan. I usually play a lot of lamb of god on bass though :3

I love to see people who analyze on watching a series but there's a thing of "overly analyze" that would disrupt the flow of the anime because of constantly critical every moment. From the beginning Edgerunner have no complicated plot and just want you to enjoy the ride. Too much critical for the storyline will dampen your enjoyment overall. Just treat it like your favorite genre of slice of life but more gritty.

I'm someone who's brain gets hung up and excited on details. I just enjoy stuff in a different way. ^^ I do go back and watch scenes fluently if I really enjoyed them. Like after I watched that rooftop scene again, and even the David not hesitating or shaking when taking his shot. It helps me appreciate it more in my own way, ya know?

Cyberpunk stories never have happy endings. It's not really a spoiler.

So do you just dislike foreshadowing in general?
@aliciaxlife2 жыл бұрын
Naw. So a common thing with short animes is when you have a predictable outcome there isn’t time to execute it well enough. So I was upset thinking that would be the case but NOPE this anime is just flat out one of the best of the year because you know what’s going to happen yet they execute it INCREDIBLY. :3
@9Godslayer2 жыл бұрын
@@aliciaxlife Yeah, I can understand that; I just thought it was weird that you considered it the show treating the audience like idiots instead of Lucy caring enough about David and the other people that she knows their personalities and that things like the ride down the freeway on the gurney weren’t an act.

Lucy foreshadowed doesn't really matter bcoz the moment David put the sandavistand to his back he's practically a walking dead waiting to die coz the guy in the 1st ep having cyberphsycosis means its just a matter of time that it will also gonna happen to david
