Edgerunners are basically disposable mercenaries doing mostly illegal and highly violent missions for clients that don't want to get connected to what they are asking of the runners. The edge to run (one of the edges to run) is the high risk/high reward lifestyle. If you do well, you got the eddys to afford a lavish lifestyle, if you don't... you end up like Pillar. Netrunners are specialised Edgerunners that do hacking and IT stuff.

Edgerunner is just another word for independent merc. But it has evolved to also include mercs who tow the edge of chrome enhancement and cyberpsychosis.

Most of the soundtrack and the background locations you see are straight from the game, that's why the world specially feel so realized. You can actually go to most of these locations in the game.

There is also the variant of runner suits. these are basically mobile cooling units but you might stil need a special chair it. Edgerunners originates from the pen & paper RPG rule set Cyberpunk 2020. The dev's CD Project Red made an addaptation called Cyberpunk RED and this is the version the used for the game. You can see Netrunners as a subclass or specialisation. Cyberpunk is a collective term for people who enhance there body with cyberware of any kind but to a degree the would reach superhuman like abilities. For example a blind or one eyed person would replace the eye(s) to see again like normal wouldn't count as cyberpunk. But if this person would add a zoom or thermal vision or night vision you could say he is a cyberpunk. It's the smallest degree it would consider. The reason why the cyber psycho started burning is a quick hack which was uploaded by Lucy to overheat his cyberware.

The song when both kissed was sang by Polish singer songwriter Dawid Podsiadło. He is huge in Poland and as Cyberpunk is a game created by Polish company he was a perfect fit to merge these worlds together. He is exceptional artist song title is little stranger, and its already 9 years old, but still holds its greatness. He has more English songs my fav is Where did your love go?

8:24 Immunosuppressants, every organ transplantation patients must take, but in the anime it is explained as immunosuppressants prevents them going Cyberpsychosis, if I remember right.

Yeah, works just like real life immunosuppressants like organ transplantees need to use, except the rejection is (not always but usually) in the brain itself

I'm 9 months late, but immunosuppressants are to prevent the body from rejecting the cyberware the same way they would for a regular organ transplant. Neuroblockers are for preventing Cyberpsychosis.

You already had explanations as to who are the edgerunners or netrunners in the comments, but as for some details: they're not doing drugs when they talk under the beach umbrella, it's their blockers to sustain the augmentations. As to why the bad guy (cyberpsycho) bursts into flames, it's because their netrunner try to hack him and fry his head, but to no end.

Most of the technology, the locations, backgrounds and the music are actually from the game. For example you can visit that place at the end and the "afterlife-bar". The guy's head was starting to burn because his cyberware was hacked by Lucy. I think the hacking skill is called "synapsis burnout" and you can use it in the game too, if you decide to make your character a netrunner build.

Edgerunners are called that way because they constantly “run on the edge” on legal and illegal works, they are a professional that can get you kill very easily as most of the job consists of mercenary work. however, once you become famous enough, and go out with a bang, you’ll be regarded as a legend, once such example is Johnny Silverhand (Keanu Reeves character from CB 2077) NetRunner, on the other hand is basically hackers, in this world, you can basically hack with your mind if you got the appropriate cyberware for it, the ice bath thing are for deep dives, basically going into the equivalent of the Internet in that world, and because how much heat that generate it will very much kill you if you don’t have a way of cooling it down as such an ice bath is the simplest and efficient way to do it.

hope you get the urge to play the game after this, the show is basically set as you play the tutorial. also lovely to see that most questions got answered, but ill just add.. the "masks" those guys were wearing are a cyber upgrade tied to the eyes, it basically blurs your face if its recorded by cameras to hide your identity

Regarding Lucy's bath, Netrunning where you send your mind into the net is EXTREMELY dangerous, and your body risks being cooked from the inside out when you do so. An Ice bath is used to keep your body cool enough that you don't burn up, but some people prefer expensive netrunning suits to do the same thing. So the people with the faceless holo masks are called Scavs, a gang in Night City. The Borged out people with multiple eyes are Maelstrom, another gang. You learn more about them in the game. Most likely not drugs but immunosuppressents or neuro blockers to help the body cope with the strain the cyberware puts on their bodies. There certainly are drugs in Night City, but the drugs in the game all make the drugs in reality seem like ibuprofen or tylenol in comparison, and people involved in edgerunning usually have at least the basic common sense to avoid those drugs because they will mess you up far more than anything found today.

Its weird to see people watch this show like its a cool action love story instead of just a straight tragedy. IMO... The Cyberpunk specific slang language, created from the Cyberpunk 2013/2020 paper and pencil role playing game, and used in this anime doesn't translate well in Japanese. Which is why the English language version is better than the Japanese language version with English subtitles.
