I used to work for Emirates and my god you summed up being cabin crew down to a TEE! the pre flight briefing anxiety, extortionately long hours taking a toll on your body, short layovers, working with people you don't know. I missed my granddads funeral because I wasn't allowed to go to it, caught pneumonia within the first few months of flying and ended my flying career with sinus surgery! haha oh the 'glamour'

I used to work for British Airways and you have summed up exactly why I left in the end. It’s odd that you don’t realise certain things about yourself until you do this job. I always considered myself a relatively confident person. But, my god, the anxiety. I’d make myself sick with worry. Even came out in a fully body rash before reporting back fit for work after being off Ill. Just with the anxiety of having to go back to work. Thanks for making me see it wasn’t just me, and that I wasn’t alone. Xxx

I'm cabin crew for a different airline and this is a very honest review. Especially when you first start flying it gets alot easier and enjoyable. I don't think you were criticizing the job you where speaking of your experience. I also dreaded the breifings but after more than 10 years in I'm much more confident. Cabin crew isn't for everyone but I work for a smaller airline and you get to know loads of people. I absolutely love my job but having 2 kids think I've come to the time to hang up my wings.

It's such a shame that this was your experience, I've worked for airlines for 19 years and I love it. Tbh VA & BA are the worst paid, we've had people leave to go there and come back because they can't afford to live on the wage. I'm a cabin manager and don't conduct my briefings that way, it was like that years ago but in all honesty, you need to know the answers. If you don't, you're no use to me in an emergency. Harsh, but true. If I can't trust that you can think on your feet and know the answer in a briefing, it's my only indication of whether you'll know it on-board. The upside to that in my airline is that we all know each other. And that's invaluable. We are a family, be it short haul or long haul. Room parties for us are usually just a springboard to start off the evening. For anyone who's been put off, not all airlines are like this. It is tough, it's not just a glamourous jetting off everywhere with no work in between but it's also a lifestyle, not just a job xxx

@@LucyJessicaCarter sorry Lucy, I didn't mean to intone you didn't know your stuff (as you mentioned, the question wasn't safety related but service). I was just trying to put it across (obviously badly!) from a seniors point of view. Personally, I think tough briefings are just an excuse for bullying and power play by some seniors. That is not how I like my day to start. There are many other ways of finding out if people know their stuff or not. And like I said, it's a shame that that's how you experienced airline life, because that's not a true reflection across the board. I'm glad you found your true passion too x

This video is SOO true!! No one realises the realities of being cabin crew. I was also crew for VA last year, I got the job when I was 19/20 I did it for 6 months and at first I loved it! It was so surreal to be let loose in New York at the age of 19 but after the first few months it certainly wore off, I got so depressed. Yet people ask ‘can’t believe you left, that’s the best job ever don’t you miss it’ no not really because you are not helped at all when feeling so low!!

I'm a ex-flight international attended and did it for 6 years and what you said is totally true. The only difference is doing the pre-flight they also use to weight check, you couldn't be over or under 5lb, you would be grounded. I'm 5'10 and had to be 125 lb (this is now not allowed in the USA when a bunch of people sued). We did get paid well, but with the new crews they started reducing the paid to so much less. My 1st flight was half way around the world, when I came home my dog barked at me :)

I had no idea you were crew! I’m crew for Virgin currently, so interesting hearing how it’s differed from when you were there. It was the best decision for me and I’m SO happy there, so hopefully this video doesn’t put off anyone who wants to do it!! It such a a shame you didn’t enjoy it, although it does sound like they used to work you pretty hard - I’ve never had a flight without a break and swapping/bidding etc is so much easier now, I’ve got so much control over my roster and I haven’t been there long 😊 I’ve never done the bullet so luckily always us at least 24 hours in New York! It also sounds like the briefings are a lot more casual these days (the exact questions go around beforehand and no briefing on the way home!) so I’m feeling lucky that they changed it, can’t blame you for feeling anxious as it sounds as though it used to be much harder! Also just have to say you look so beautiful with your hair like this ♥️

Being ground staff is hard enough, I can't imagine being cabin crew. I'm always in awe of their composure, patience and demeanor. I've gotten friends free upgrades off the books, once a commercial passenger and then for myself or nominees. But you use this power sparingly and it's at the discretion of the crew, who were often kind.

You work in the airport? I've always said I have such high respect for check-in/gate agents. You take so much abuse for shit that's not your fault whatsoever, and you do it with class. I cannot imagine what the hell goes through the minds of people that they think yelling at a ground crew member will ever be okay... It's like regular customer service, retail/food service etc. but so much worse. Seriously, thank you. Thank you for doing your job. My brother is a pilot for an international airline, and I travel a fair amount back and forth to Scandinavia bc of the boyf, so I have serious appreciation for every person getting me safely from A to B.

Karis Harnett I've been VA cabin Crew for 12 years. Don't let this put you off and no where near as bad as it sounds briefings are enjoyable and the dreaded questions are from a subject your told the month before. I can understand people find it really anxious but when your brand new coming from training where questions are multiple choice to having to give the answer by memory it's a different (more stressful) environment but never meant to catch you out. Please apply again when the recruitment opens and always remember when starting you really have to give it 6-12 months to settle in. All in all it's an amazing job and you meet great people while seeing the world x

I just couldn’t be the other side of the world with my baby at home. It’s hard missing out on family events. My husband hated it so much. He was so happy when I got pregnant ☺️me too obviously. Id agree amazing experience and I loved it to be honest but there are definitely more challenges than what people expect. Being a flight attendant is glamourised…..maybe because the women are impeccably dressed, hair and makeup, they look so pretty. Travelling to and from exotic locations. My friend was desperate to become a FA from 6 years of age it ran in the family. She got in at 22 I think. It is perfect for the single person, young even older. You can do it with a child as her sister and brother in law were both FA's and were able to work their shifts out, otherwise would be to difficult to juggle. That's only because they were permanent before they had their child. The single person doesn't have those entitlements. Also based on how long you have been a permanent FA. Stay in nice hotels but my friend would get lonely as you don't have someone/friend/partner to share it with and as she said you may only stop over 1/2 days and your exhausted to maybe socialise. Also different cabin crew each trip, can't bond get to know people, and you don't get on with some either. The training and interviews, are quite rigorous, at least 3 rounds of interviews to go through and pass, physical's and stuff. You get a meal allowance and my friend would save her money that was the only way she made a little extra. On your feet the whole time, not sleeping in your own bed, never interested me. Maybe a young persons game.

I'm cabin crew for the 2nd time and have been for years now.. The first time was an absloute nightmare going through training, tests, exams, drills.. I'm surpised I survived it. My 1st airline was like this alot of different people so it was the whole different sets of crew you never worked with and a few days there with certain crew I wanted to just leave, no team work.. Won't helpful if you wanted someone experience in a situation.. Nothing, ended up leaving etc. Now my 2nd airline it's much more relaxed for me training was fine as I knew what to expected and helped the new flyers out as much as I could.. Where I am now it's a smaller base so I tend to work with the same people alot but it's helped as we are a family and help each other out, go out for Xmas and birthday events.. Some days are still testing but that's life for you cant have it always the same way lol I used to absloutely hate briefing in my 1st airline but 2nd airline don't bother me at all considering I work on 3 planes 1 being totally different to the other 2 plane.

Although I think maybe VA is a much bigger company than the one I worked for as I only ever had one trip where I felt like you and was lonely and didn't know anyone. The rest of the time I knew someone or a few people or as years went on everyone! Also got to stay over for up to a week in most places as we were package holidays so if they only went on a Saturday then crew stayed till the following week. And I got to do many friend request trips, where they try and put you on the same flight as a friend! And of course your paid for every hour down route! So for me being paid to spend a week in Cancun or Barbados with a friend was the best thing ever! Bullets were few and far between but I did do shortfall as well which was also nice to come home the same day at the weekend. For me it was the best job ever. Maybe it depends on companies ect too. Loved your video though, lovely to hear it all again. Xx

I was cabin crew too for 3 years and I agree with everything u said. I also used to get anxiety on the pre flight briefs!!! 😫 And I agree, it depends on the crew and number 1 you have, whether u have a good trip or not. Plus the hours were awful! I worked for first choice. I did love the trips tho, I had two 8 days in the Maldives 😄. Love ur channel and ur lovely family x

Absolutely no disrespect meant but if you can’t handle a high pressure situation in front of colleagues you have never met how could you be expected to react in an emergency with a plane full of strangers whom you’ve never met. I completely agree with the high pressure training (though I do believe the pay should be much better)

Hi yes it's a valid point. To me also is the fact that perhaps their Training isn't preparing them to be "confronted" with questions in this way, The Training should prepare them for this so that they can be confident in answering/having the answers, then they can take that confidence with them for the flight. Lucy did mention something about them during Training being able to write down info as at 9:24, so perhaps it's a case of "the left hand" not knowing what "the right hand is doing"; Training versus actual Operations. Also, good point ref the pay, kind regards.

I totally disagree. She acknowledged herself that it wasn't about the knowledge and having to think about it quickly, it was about the fear of humiliation that was the worst part. That is NOT the way to motivate staff, and make great employees. Probably most of the Flight Attendants felt the same way and simply memorized the answers to these questions so they could recite them on the spot. Reciting answers out of fear of humiliation is completely different to remaining calm and using logical thinking in an emergency situation. I get why the airline does this, but perhaps a more successful way to reinforce knowledge before flights is to have short 'scenarios' that you work out with a partner and the first team to win gets some kind of incentive - like points or a prize or something. This would force them to draw on all their knowledge quickly, consciously and effectively which is EXACTLY what you need in a high pressure situation.

I remember the briefing questions, I used to dread answering them. BA scrapped that a few years back and made it a “team contribution briefing” but some cabin managers still did it, but we used to say if we get it wrong, we don’t care 😂! Xx

This is brilliant ! So true about training the absolute stress of training people think it’s so easy to become crew but a few people from my group didn’t make it through ! And the anxiety for pre briefing 🤦🏻‍♀️ it’s awful ! The different management tactics are so ridiculous and in my airline it’s all about seniority and your supposed to get in the bus in order of seniority and when your the most junior I just feel like an idiot waiting ! I love the job and my airline actually pays really well I think it’s soooo bad that BA and VA get away with paying so little 😏 we also get 150$ spending money per day in the destination we visit and I heard BA don’t get any allowance like that’s insane !

I worked for Ryanair in their London offices in Finchley Road working in their telesales and ticketing Dept no cold calling back in the late 80s with no formal training but for me it was the best move I ever made especially after my last boss said I would regret leaving but I showed. Great experiences and travelled to many places around the world.

Just saw this which caught my eye on being cabin crew. Fascinating because when I was in my early 20’s I applied to British Airways but didn’t get an interview. I always wondered what it would have been like And you’ve given a very honest view of ‘your’ personal experience which have answered all my ‘what if’s’. Also, you mention you have anxiety, so-do-I! I know it’s off piste but how do you cope? It can be quite crippling and I now have high blood pressure. Breathing exercises are by far the best for me because concentrating on breathing slowly takes your mind off what’s making you anxious. I’m stress head, over thinking things but it’s in my make up. Brilliant video, thank you for sharing it 🦋

I could be wrong, but having only flown with Canadian companies I think they are a bit more relaxed. I don’t know because I don’t work in the field but I know they don’t have to have there hair a certain way or wear particular makeup or any makeup for that matter. They all wore uniforms but even those weren’t exactly the same as the next crew member. I just recently flown with WestJet and that’s what I noticed. First time watching and I absolutely love your personality. Subscribed!
