I know you listed training as a con, but I'm feeling very reassured by the amount of training flight attendants go through. Not that I ever thought they weren't well-trained to handle emergencies and stuff, but having it confirmed makes me feel better.
@kbs12124 жыл бұрын
Adina Lesperance A crash has an incredibly low survival rate, so the training is simply to make you and the crew ‘feel’ safe enough to fly. If people knew the truth, people would be too scared to fly and airlines would lose revenue. The emergency procedures for preparing for a crash are just to give everyone something to do instead of waiting to die. Also, very few crew members will actually attempt to save your life in an emergency. I used to be one, and my ex-colleagues would say that all the time. I even admit it myself, because there’s not much that can truly be done anyway.
@beaublackburn85263 жыл бұрын
@@kbs1212 the pilots are the ones trying to keep you safe during a crash so the flight attendants training really doesn’t matter there. Also the safest way to travel by far is by plane
@BeccaIrene2 жыл бұрын
@@beaublackburn8526 (10 months later) Actually, the pilots need to focus flying the plane so the flight attendants are the ones helping everyone in the cabin get in the correct landing positions, safety vests, and helping direct people away from exits that might have a fire outside or blocked by water. The flight attendants also know how to properly inflate the life rafts and slides needed to get out of the plane... The pilots must stay locked in the cockpits and exit out the cockpit windows while the flight attendants get everyone out of the plane safely.

Hi Becca, I’ve been a flight attendant for a little over 20 years now and for the most part you hit the nail on the head in your description of a flight attendants job and it’s benefits however I do have to correct you on a couple of things. The pay, although it is true that in your first few years the pay is below the cost of living worthy, the longer you stay the more you make. When I started back in 2000 I was making roughly $18-20K per year. After 5 years it went up a considerable amount and every year after a little more until you reach a full pay cap (in my company it’s the 13 year mark) making around $65k a year more or less (I have colleagues making 6 figures) depending on how many hours you choose to fly (with each new contract that amount goes up). That brings me to another correction. The more you fly the more control you have on where and when you fly. You get to control your schedule and have consistency in your life. Seniority is everything in the aviation works. Earn it and you’ll have control of it. Glad to know you enjoyed it for the most part. Not easy being new and in reserve but if you stick it through for a few years it’s life changing. Good luck on your future adventures.

Thanks for this!! I think I mentioned in the video that unless you are wanting to be an FA as a lifelong career (which I didn't) then the pay is pretty bad. For those who want to stay in the industry despite growing a family and kids, then more power to them! I knew I only wanted to be an FA for a couple years, which is what I think most people aim to do when being an FA for a season and not as a career. I'm glad you are enjoying it and that you've got the seniority to work with - that's awesome! xo

Sounds like the job just was not for you. My wife is an FA. She absolutely loves her job! She works for a great company and does get paid very well. Training was 8 weeks, but it is absolutely necessary to assure the safety of the passengers. She gets her schedule a month in advance and her "on call" days are scheduled in a block. She can trade flights with other FA's and pick up flights someone else does not want. She is gone most of the time but our kids are big so it is not an issue. If someone has small kids it would be tough for the spouse at home. You are correct that the dress code needs to be adhered too but I understand why. In the end it is a personal choice.

PROS: 1. get paid to travel (airlines pay for a portion of your food and hotel, on work trips) 2. the spontaneous lifestyle (exciting to go to a new place or meet new people) 3. special treatments by airport (domestic flights let you pack things passengers don't like shampoos and food. cut lines, no queues. dicounts on items) 4. the uniform (gives a sense of pride, feeling of importance, priority access) 5. cemrederie with other flight attendants. bond between airline crew members, meeting new people. CONS: 1. low salary + airlines don't pay for trips other than work trips or if you're allocated another base 2. the spontaneous lifestyle (stressful, unpredictable and can be inconvenient. eg. standby duty which makes you unavailable for many events like weddings or meet ups with friends because you don't know your schedule ) 3. a month to two months training. strict rules like uniform, makeup, certain high heels or certain length of skirt, many tests and drills. becca's airline did not allow trainees to fail 2 times or more (under 90%). training or dress code is paid by air stewardess. 4. the uniform (expensive, get in trouble for not wearing makeup, skirt length too short, hair is not neat, look professional ) 5. being away from family and friends

All of that has changed, the airlines know that there are millions of pretty boys and girls who want this job and so the flight attendants are replaceable easily. Airlines now are in it to make big bucks and so that means longer work hours and less pay. It still is special to be a flight attendant because the demand for it is so high. I dated someone who was a FA and all the cons you listed for why you stopped being a FA is the reason why it actually didn’t work out. FAs really don’t make a lot of money so he always picked up trips so that he could make extra money. He wasn’t really interested in leaving to find better paying job or if he did he would miss traveling for free. We couldn’t always spend weekends together like other couples do since he would be on 3-5 day trips. And finally, he seriously was caught up in the FA lifestyle. I don’t blame young professionals for taking advantage of being in a beautiful country or popular town and wanting to go out and party but it sorta sucks when you’re home and you see your bf/gf on an island or exploring a town with their crew and then go out to a bar/club afterwards. For women dating men that are FAs, you also can’t be overly jealous that your bf mighttttt have a lot of female friends bc let’s face it.... majority of FAs are women. So if your bf does decide to go out with a young crew, he’s most likely going to be going out with other women which in turn can make you a little jealous. In all, this video is very true to the FA lifestyle and I have heard many FAs love their jobs. Best of luck to all the people trying to be FAs!

And, even as a new hire, you get to bid on schedules you’d like which gives you room to plan on perhaps working as a part time nurse. I knew one woman in my training class who was a dental hygienist who kept working as one during her days off from flying. Once you have seniority, you’ll be able to accommodate your schedule much more comfortably.

Hearing all you went through sounded like atravasty. im struggling a little right now after walking away from a job my employers were harassing their employees but thinking i wanted to be a flight attentdant i might have had it much worse. You have veered me in a different direction. My previous job was always negativity with so much drama and that's not what i want to be around. As well as never knowing what my schedule would look like and knowing i am facing so much anxiety as it is; i think being a flight attendant would only make it so much worse. Again thank you for your imput and i prov you or prob you... congradulating you on a video job well done. i think your experience is tremendously observed and recognized through your video. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! IM SO PROUD YOU GOT OUT OF THAT AND ON TO BETTER THINGS

The pay can be so bad and everyone is under the impression flight attendants do well financially! Especially when you're at a regional. I had to live with up to 11 other people in a 3 bedroom apartment because I couldn't afford anything else. I eventually quit as well, because for me, the pros didn't outweigh the cons long term. I tried panty hose for about two days (and ruined about 4 pairs). Then discovered compression tights, which last way way longer and at the time, insurance covered! We didn't require makeup in the handbook and I often didn't for 3am shows. They didn't like it, but it wasn't required so they couldn't do anything about it!

It's so different than here !!!! In Brazil we have "wallet assigned", that's it basically guarantee you that you HAVE to get paid at least the salary base of your profession AND have to know you day offs at least 15 days before, so those "cons" don't fit here Kkkkansnans BUT the "training" is BUT MORE complicated. To be a Flight Attendant here we need a course, a buch of exams to check if you are able to fly, a test that are gonna to check if you KNOW how a lot of subjects of aviation AND a training of the companie lol. So it's more complicated to be a flight attendant here.

this was a really helpful video. i'm at a weird point in my life where i have few attachments and a lot of questions. i've always loved travel, and i've thought about becoming a fa before, but this was helpful to really breakdown some of the aspects of the career.
@mikeypatterson7966 Жыл бұрын
United pays their flight attendants pretty well, about 35 an hour. If you are looking to gain experience, a lower paying position might benefit you, but if you want to continue your career as a flight attendant, set higher standards for yourself. UA flight attendants ranks 4 out of 5 stars on Indeed. You could also sell cruises working from home as a comission based employee and set your own schedule and you could earn bigger earnings and enjoy the benefits of both professions at once, or something similar for extra cash. I worked for an airline and they really need to find a way to pay employees better for the amount of customer service they deal with day to day. A single flight segment really does not make a lot of revenue and the airline has to pay for fuel costs, also. So there is a lot to balance on the budget.

Becca: I really liked the way you described the pros and cons for being a flight attendant! By the way I would like the know what airline gives a 3-4 days in Hawaii for a lay over?? I want to join the airline you worked for!! Most U.S. based airline ( to my knowledge and research give approx. 24 hours off there) Actually that is rapidly becoming a con for being a flight attendant..... you don't get the long lay overs any more!!! You basically get just enough to eat and sleep and not really to gallivant around the town unless you have the strength of Tarzan!! You are tired after a long flight ie Mainland U.S. to Hawaii and so resting and sleep is important too!!

Thank you for sharing, I was thinking about becoming a flight attendant and the Internet never told me any of the stuff so I’m really glad that I found your video and I’m starting to rethink being a flight attendant. mostly the only thing that’s really wrong is the money that you’re going to make. I read online that it was $45,000 a year so I was planning on being able to get a nice size apartment for at least $500 a month for rent to $1000 but knowing that it varies then I’m thinking I’m gonna have to re-think my decision I don’t want to struggle

Every airline is different when it comes to compensation. But most of the time you have to work your way UP to 45K a year... but need to start at the bottom like everyone else. With higher seniority comes higher pay ;)

I'm excited to become a flight attendant even despite the cons. I'm a 15 y/o sophomore in high school that's on a varsity swim team and have begun my first year of foreign language and will be taking classes online so I can progress faster and do all four years of it. I've also recently signed up for hospitality and travel-class. I am a little rusty on my infant, child, and adult CPR but have summer classes ready once the school year is out. If anyone else has any recommendations for classes or ways I should prepare please let me know!!

I have a story about my experience with two wonderful flight attendants. So due to my health condition I require a port to receive IV medications. I do not know how to this day but the needle in my port came out I don't know if the tape lost its stick or what but it came out. My nurse / caregiver told me we have to put a new one in that I couldn't go the whole flight without my IV meds I needed them and I said to her do I really need to do it you know getting an IV put in is not the most Pleasant thing in the world for me and she said I know your scared but you need your iv she told me she used to be a flight nurse in Lebanon and in the states before she became my full-time caregiver.. and she told me we'll get through it .Two flight attendants that I got close to Kathy and Mary came to check and see if we needed anyting I became good friends with them on our long flight and my nurse/ caregiver was getting the new needle and supplies out of her bag Mary saw the look on my face when my caregiver got the needle out and she asked what was going on and if I was okay and I told her that my caregiver has to put in the new iv and getting one put in isn't the most Pleasant thing in the world and it scares The Living Daylights out of me so Mary asked me if I wanted her and Kathy to be by me for support since they didn't need to do anything at that time since Mary was the cabin manager. I said yes please then Mary said well why don't we go back to the resting area so you can have an actual bed to lay on when she does everything. the reason why they offered was because turns out they both used to work in a hospital as nursing assistants so they were pretty much used to it so Mary told the rest of the crew that there's going to be a medical procedure going on and that we will need to borrow one of the beds on the plane since I'm getting a new iv put in. While my nurse and Kathy were getting my things and taking them back to the rest area Mary took me back and got a nice bed set up for me to lay on they came in with everything including my portable oxygen and all of my IV stuff. Kathy got an empty cart and we put a towel over it so that way my nurse wadad could have a good workplace. Mary and Kathy we're given masks and gloves by my nurse just to be more sterile and clean and to protect me from infection. a couple of the crew members were wondering what was going on since they saw two flight attendants putting on masks and gloves. They knew that they both used to work in a hospital and they let the crew know that they were helping out with a procedure. When it was time to clean and poke Kathy and Mary stayed right by me Kathy was the one that handed my caregiver the things she needed and Mary was the main person that was my support when my caregiver was about to do the poke Mary gave me her hand to hold and right before my caregiver was about to poke Mary told me when she was going to do it and to give me the heads up when my caregiver was about to poke Mary said that she is going to count and after she said three she said she was going to say squeeze and that was my cue to squeeze her hand my caregiver poked and was getting the needle in Kathy and Mary were both telling me that I'm doing really good and that we're almost done. My nurse was singing songs to me in Arabic while she was doing it. while I was holding Mary's hand Kathy told me to just keep breathing. since. my nurse was putting on the tape and Flushing it and getting me all hooked up it was getting a little hard to breathe after all of that so Mary and Kathy help me get my oxygen on and going since I mainly use my oxygen at night or when I need it during the day. After all that they let me lay there and rest for a little bit and they got me a nice blanket to keep me warm After we got me all set up and after they got my oxygen turned on my Nurse, Kathy, and Mary all told me that I did real good

Also I plan on spending my time at hotels exercising, running, reading/studying and socializing with others with the same mindset. Partying will not increase the value of ones life and if one has such a great opportunity to experience this life style, I think night clubbing it up would be no better than doing the same back home.

Sometimes it's harder to get an iv put in my port and this time it was the case. My nurse had to poke a couple of times to get it in the right spot and since I can't see well my other senses are higher including feeling pain so I felt it more than what people would normally feel and we didn't have any quick numbing medication we could use at the time we needed to get it in as soon as possible. Since my natural reflex is to try to move whenever I feel that amount of pain Mary just reminded me to try my best not to move squeeze her hand and to do nice and easy breathing and she told me that she was right there and that she's not going anywhere. Since it was really starting to get to me the pain from all the poking my nurse suggested that both of us sing Arabic together and that we sing one of the hymns that she taught me a Kathy and Mary. So we did and they both loved our Arabic even though they couldn't understand it and when my nurse got it in the right spot Mary told me and she told me don't move just keep on chatting with me well your nerves what's the tape on and gets it all secure and gets me all hooked up to my iv after all of that and after letting me know I did really good before I took a little rest Kathy and Mary came back with a little bag and it had my own flight crew wing badge and it also had first class gear such as first class pajamas. When I woke up from my rest I was on my pulse ox monitor and the soft beeping was what woke me up. My nurse was in the bathroom and she was taking our things back to our seats except the stuff that was attached to me such as my ivy my oxygen and my oxygen monitor. Since they've done it before for other people when they worked in the hospital my nurse asked Kathy and Mary to take my pulse and things to check the monitor to make sure everything was good before they got me up so that way they could tell if I still needed to lay down for a little bit Kathy took my pulse and Mary check the Monitor and everything was good so Kathy helped with my iv and Mary helped me get up and help me walk back to my seat so that way I wouldn't fall. I'm really glad and thankful that those flight attendants were there and that they offered to help and that they had some medical experience like that because I know they didn't have to do that at all but I'm really glad they did. I keep in contact with them to this day
