I'm an American, I've been living in Europe for a few years, and I'm married to an EU citizen. Being comfortable is far more important than looking good or fitting in. It doesn't matter if you "look American." Just use common sense, don't wave your money around, and act respectable. Get pretty once you get to your hotel, if you want. The people on the plane, airport, and in public transport don't know you, don't care, and will likely never see you again. I can't stand it when world traveling Americans seem to think they're better than the "standard" American. We're all just people. The vast majority of Europeans couldn't care less about how fashionable you look.

Flight attendant input: Walk around but please stay in economy. Most business guests won't want to be disturbed during quiet time. Please don't do stretches or "yoga" in the galley. The galley is a work space, also flight attendants deserve a break on a long haul flight and to eat in peace after the service. Use the space by the doors or between the lavatories not the actual galley.

Definitely agree with all your tips. My wife is a little claustrophobic, so after our first trip to Europe, we decided that if we couldn't afford to fly in at least Premium Economy, then we can't afford to go. Fortunately we have been able to fly in business or first for most of our long haul flights, but I doubt that will continue in the future, so any "Economy" tips are always welcome. Great video!

I live in Australia and from here to anywhere is long haul. Most direct flights to the UK or Europe are 20-24 hours plus depending on how long a stop you have on the way. Nothing makes you feel human on a flight that long. I rarely ever sleep so there’s no point worrying about it. I don’t wear makeup on a flight and usually wear a comfortable pair of stretch jeans and two or three light layers. I walk up and down and usually talk with the air crew for a while rather than sitting down. I always get on the plane with a few magazines, my kindle app loaded with books and a small bag of peanut butter M&Ms

I can SO relate - I'm also in 🇦🇺 Australia. It's about 20 years since I did a long haul flight, but the last time it was 23 excruciating hours, what with stopping in some God-forsaken middle eastern sandpit or the Canary Islands at 3am to refuel, then having to fight your way through the mini city that is Heathrow, with its millions of people at any one time, to finally catch a connecting flight to Brussels, looking and feeling like something even the cat wouldn't drag home. It's the pits. However, on the return trip there's nothing more beautiful than seeing that lovely Qantas plane sitting on the tarmac with "Longreach" painted on the side. That's my ride!! Nothing more Australian than seeing that flying Kangaroo 🦘 🪃

Aisle forever! Husband & I decided on our 2nd trip to Europe (from the West Coast, 10 or 11 hrs) to reserve window & middle. Not sure why, my husband had some idea it would be quieter, but never again. Aisle was taken by a young Giant, definitely the largest person I’ve ever been that close to, and we were both simply squeezed to our left the whole trip. Lovely polite young man with a wife & several small kids in the middle section so he had to have an aisle, and nothing he could do about us. Anyway, now we fly opposite aisles, it’s totally fine :)

@JoyfulLivingwithJenLefforge5 жыл бұрын
Honestly if the weather is good, walk through any of the parks (Hyde is my favorite) and have lunch or tea at one of the outdoor cafes at Covent Garden. If the weather is poor, I loved the National Gallery (not the National Portrait Gallery, I mean it's OK but the National Gallery is better) and Tower of London should be done once by everyone. But get to the Tower super early to avoid crowds - you can bang the whole thing out including the crown jewels in 2 hours if you get there early and if you're a history buff it's a must see! Also I don't like the hop on and off bus in London - the traffic is too bad and it's just too slow. You're better off exploring on foot and using the Tube. Oh, and download City Mapper if you haven't already. It's a God send for navigating transportation!

I usually take a large water bottle to keep in the pocket so I can drink water anytime I want it. Also, I always wear a sweater and possibly a wrap and use an oversized pillow case to put those in along with a blanket given by airlines. I love to sleep in the window because there is space for the large pillow I have "made" and I am not leaning against anyone else. I do not mind waking someone up is I HAVE to go to the bathroom! I find the aisles much more disturbing by people walking around and bumping me and also the food/drink carts. Also, we usually eat before we board the plane just so we can try to get to sleep before the food service. We take a sleeping pill right away and usually get a good 3-5 hours sleep. I always have eye covers and ear plugs also.

Just wearing glasses on board I find easier. Almost all long haul start last meal service in Y 90 minutes before. 60 would make clean up later for landing. NC headphones are a must. Agreed. And anything that smells should be banned. However, this should include bodies. 😀. Never know what the person on that seat next to you is allergic to. Looking forward to the next list.

All great points! I’m so like you when I fly but I get ready before going to the airport for an overnight flight. We do a lot of those from Hawaii to the mainland, about 8 hours. I get ready for “bed” before I leave home if it’s a late overnight flight. I hate airplane food so i usually eat dinner before I get to the airport. Peoples obsession with overhydrating while flying is comical to me. And before anyone jumps down my throat in the comments, I am a physician so I don’t need advice on the effects of dehydration in an 8 hour overnight flight. I don’t get up multiple times at home during the night to drink water so Why would I need to do that on a plane? I drink very little on the plane so I don’t have to keep getting up to use the restroom. My bladder waking me is not a good recipe for sleep. And generally If I sleep, great, if not i read a book or watch a couple movies. Then a big cup of good coffee after I land. I may be a bit tired that day but if I flew to a different country then I’m having too much fun to be too tired until evening.

Even if you don’t have a vascular problem they keep your feet from swelling up and being smushed by your shoes during the flight. If you don’t like the whole long sock use calf compression sleeves. I recommend Sockwell and Incrediware

The chunking part is key! It’s not a 10 hour flight it’s a couple of meals with a nap in between. You got this!

Sleeping has always been the biggest challenge for me on long haul flights, Love the idea of keeping your “home bedtime routine” to get your body in that space. Flying overseas business or first is such a huge bucket list item for me! 😀

Yeah did Delta one recently from London and OMG GAME CHANGER. Sadly not something I can do regularly. Kelly, they came around with an ice cream sundae cart with cordials to pour over the top.

You need to adjust to where you are going not home. Especially with 10, 12 or 14 hour time shifts. Start a week before. Go to bed earlier or later depending on schedule. And move 2 hours per day.

Wow this is such a helpful video. I can feel like I learned from a long haul travel expert. You are incredible! What I can only share about long haul travel is having a great carry on bag that can help you with a little ease for your things that you will need most of the time during travel. I use Nomad Lane Bento Bag, a duffel bag that packs like suitcase and fits under your seat. Long haul on a economy seat? no problem. Though I know it just help a little. Still wanna share. thanks!

I can’t seem to find it but it’s the brand they sell at all the airports and it’s the simple micro-bead kind, truly nothing fancy, and it’s not too big. Maybe cloudz is the brand? I loaned it to one of the boys and they aren’t here for me to nag about it.🥰

I like to put on my first class airline jammies right after boarding. There's that five-course dinner. My wife says that 98% of my dinner will be in me and the other 2% will be on me. I will let my jammies take the hit. No more food on my shirt. You just can't take me anywhere. Window or aisle? I'll take both.

I just finished your ‘Married to a Commercial Pilot’ video. The comments were disabled, or I would have posted this there :) Question: Since there is no arguing that aviation is in the blood, is your husband growing anxious about mandatory retirement? Are you? Sidebar: I am married to a commercial pilot, as well. He’s almost ten years my senior (52 yo). We have been married for almost 25 years, so this is the only life I (we) know. He’s mentioned retirement recently. It is most definitely NOT something he is looking forward to. Their careers make up so much of who they are. Not quite their entire identity, but pretty darn close. Just curious, as we seem to be approaching another transition in his career...xx
@JoyfulLivingwithJenLefforge5 жыл бұрын
Yeah sorry about that I was getting some wacky stuff on that video so turned off the comments. We talk about it a lot as Scott will be 54 in March so we are even closer than you are! We have considered everything from him taking another aviation job to buying a business. I wouldn’t say we are anxious but we both know we won’t be ready to retire so not sure what will happen! Yes, a new transition coming up for sure!

Omg....that happened to me on my last long haul. As everyone is settling in, a set of TOES magically appears in the space between my seat and the one next to me. I immediately SHOVED an airline pillow in the space and wedged it to close the space completely. The lady put her feet back on the deck. I was so grossed out lol 😣

My husband wants to know how to stay awake (for me not him) on a flight. I have spent my whole life flying between California and spain...multiple round trips. I kid you not that I can take a power nap between sitting down and before take-off. I take another power nap just waiting for the drink cart to make it to my row. I take power naps during the safety procedures.I am incapable of staying awake. Last year I did long haul from spain to Chicago with my family. I had to pay attention to both my daughters. I STRUGGLED to not fall alsleep during the flight because there was no time where they both napped at the same time. I sleep on all planes, cars and trains.
