In this video join me (and Joli) for a super long 1 hour plant chores video! There have been lots of plant to do's recently - repotting, watering, dusting, pruning, propagating, repotting, potting up and soooo much more. My plant chores have been getting on top slightly recently and I've been feeling a bit burnt out and overwhelmed by all my plant care. I talk about plant burnout in this video, and some of the things I do to stay motivated when it comes to caring for my houseplants. Thank you to everyone who asked questions, and I really hope you enjoy the video!

I've been "doing plants" for 60 years but am new to KZbin as a resource. Love seeing all the species people are collecting now + the new substrates, rooting strategies, etc. Claire, it would be so nice if you shared a couple of sentences about the history of a plant/project. For example, your moss prop box: "these begonia cuttings went in the beginning of June; the moss was dampened with water mixed with SuperThrive (1 tsp to 1 gal water)., and I added no water in the interim, as you can see by how dry the moss is." That would give those new to your channel more of a complete picture, tho it might be redundant for your regular viewers. Thanx for considering!

Hey I noticed you did the repot in bare feet :) my girlfriend does the exact same thing. No matter what time of the year if she is potting or repotting anything she takes her socks off and pots/repots in bare feet every time ! She said it helps her feel at one with her plants :)

I loved that question from a viewer, "If you could just bring one plant back from the dead, which one would it be?" And to answer that, for me, it would be my Hoya crassipetiolata Splash. I miss that plant, but I know it will come back into my collection one day. I love these vloggy videos as I can potter about doing my own chores while listening to you. Today, I assembled a Plantbox vertical self-watering plant wall system to go in my new plant room. I still don't know what plants are going in it yet 🤔 Then, I potted up some propagations, and watered the Anthuriums. Sending big hugs to Joil and yourself 🤗🤗

If you have problems finding horticultural or insecticidal soap, you can also use dish soap (hand washing. Not machine detergent). I just put a couple drops in my hands, add some water, suds it up and then rub each individual stem and leaf. You have 2 methods going on then. The soap, but also the physical touching of the leaf (which can squoosh bugs). Rinse well, allow to air dry, repeat in 3-5 days. After a cpl times, the spider mites are usually gone. I've used that method for 25 years and works like a charm. Of course, the very best care method is just keeping your plants healthy so their own defense systems can take care of things. Don't over water, don't underwater. I rarely have pests-- I'd say Ive had bugs maybe 2 times in the last 5 years and both times they came in on plants from Home Depot. I've been a plant lover/keeper for 30+ years, and bugs are not a problem that should be considered a normal occurrence. If you have constant bugs and aren't adding new plants all the time, and not moving plants in from outdoors, you really should look at you're routine care and see if something is causing your plants to be stressed, which weakens them to becoming hosts to pests.

Hi Claire! Love the chill plant chores day video and often do some of my own while listening. On the Dean McDowell, there is no need to root cuttings if you take them. This is because, just like a climbing philo that has rooted into a moss pole, the dean mcdowell has already established roots into the soil. So what you can do is just cut the main crawling stem in half using a utility knife, remove the older half with its soil, then slide the newer half (the “top cut”) back down to the start of the trough planter. That will give it room to continue growing while continuing to size up! It’s kind of like a “chop and extend” for crawlers. I’ve recently done it with my gloriousum and it’s doing well so far, continuing to grow with no issues. Sydney plant guy also has a video from a few months ago where he demonstrates it. Hope you find this helpful!

Ihave several of the Dean McDowell Philodendron plants.. A few of them I have in the long rectangular planter. If you want you can chop a section of the plant and repot the cutting in the same pot so it crawls towards but to the side of the original plant. This will make the plant very full. You will likely find the plant already has roots.. likely the new leaf isn’t rooted yet. If you leave the plant as it is the plant tends to jump the edge and grow over the end of the pot. I don’t recommend bending the new section. You may need to support the newly planted section until the roots grab hold again. Love your channel and your collection. 😊🌱

I look forward to doing my plant tour to showcase some of my favourite plants 😊 One plant that I would really like to bring back to my care is the anthurium dressleri x forgetti. I had a small plant growing in a prop box and it was starting to grow bigger leaves but in October last year I put it on a shelf while cleaning the prop box before going away for months and didn’t realised I did not put it back in the box and found it completely dead when I returned. Yes, I did enjoy this video. Your silver sword is beautiful. That is one of my favorites also. However, I much prefer the leaf shape when it's still juvenile. I took a propigation of mine when I was losing leaves left and right. Not sure what was going on, but I'm starting over. Today's video inspired me to combine a hoya propigation with it's "Mother". Don't know why I didn't think of it before but it will look very nice. 😊

Hello Claire, a great video again and how wonderful that you're experimenting with Pon. I've been trying Leca (in self-watering pots and water gage) since a year now - and my plants love to get enough water and nutritions all the time - they grow so fast. Now I'm trying Pon for my Hoya cuttings. And to make my life easier, I put a plastic wick (cotton rotted) in each pot to suck the moisture from the cachepot into the substrat (without Pon being directly in the water)... Works great so far. Greetings, Susanne

Great video Claire. I paused the video did some watering and finished watching it.😊 Has anyone here had their silver sword letting out a lot of flowers at the same time? I don’t know what to do with the flowers! Last year there was only 2 flowers so I broke them off so it didn’t rob the plant of energy, this year I have about 10 flowers coming in. Technically do they rob the plant of energy to the leaves? Thank if anyone knows! Natalie 🫶🏼🪴

I discovered your channel by accident recently and I'm really enjoying your videos. I have some questions about the products you use and the lighting in your flat . Ninja soil does not seem to be available in the United States but I can get Pon..... Is that essentially the same thing? When you put plants in the Semi Hydro you put water and plant in the same container rather than using one container inside another with the water in the bottom container...what am I missing here? Do you have a video on semi hydro growing? Could you talk about your lighting in an upcoming video or point me to an older video if you have already done that. Thanks you so much!

For your McDowe: What about rising the level of the plant in its pot a bit so you can make a temporary horizontal moss pole as a pot extension while searching for a longer pot option? Don't know if it would work but then again why shouldn't it just be careful with hydration using a spray bottle or something 🤷

Claire, you definitely have a Manjula. Mine is so large and lovely, it is, by far, my favorite pothos. Once yours sizes up, I am betting it usurps your Marble Queen. I live in Ohio, Mid-West USA, and this summer, the thrips have been truly awful. My Calathea collection has suffered the most, but my Alocasia have been hit hard, as well, and it looks like my Alocasia Zebrina is losing the battle...I soo do not want to lose her. I am thinking I might want to try her in pon, but I have never used it before, and I'm a little bit scared. Also, the thrips had a feast on my Leopardina, and I noticed in one of your past vids that you have one. Have you ever had to rehab it? Any advice? Edit - I would bring back my Alocasia cuprea. I lost it to root rot this past spring :( .

I really enjoy watching your videos, and for example really enjoyed the one where you asked AI planty questions.... that was fun! However I have a question / observation and I hope you won't take an offence to it. It seems to me that maybe possibly you are not 100% yourself... Many times while watching your videos I felt like you are saying what you think is the "correct" thing to say, or possibly sometimes even exaggerating your obsession with certain plants and how they make you happy. Ive noticed when you are with Emma, you seem much more relaxed and "you". I was wondering whether it is the case at all or maybe just talking to the camera might be still weird to you (it would certainly be to me :))) I really enjoy your content and took some inspiration with my own plant collection, I was just wondering and couldn't resist to ask... Just again, please dont take an offecnce, it is not meant to bring you down... If you hate this comment, of course I wouldn't be mad if you deleted it immediately :)

An interesting observation, and one that's hard to know how to reply to... I try to be myself as much as possible on my channel and be as honest with my opinions as I can in regards to things that are working/not working/making me happy/getting me down etc. This has also now turned into my full time job, so (as with any job) there are some days where I'm perhaps not quite as on form/feeling myself as I'd like to be. There are occasions where I might be having an off day, or struggling with anxiety, and 99% of the time pushing through filming, talking, and getting on top of my plant care genuinely helps me and makes me feel much better. I sometimes watch my own videos back as I'm editing them and have similar thoughts, but I try not to read into them and overanalyse myself too much, as I know I can only be what feels like my best and most genuine self at any given moment. I definitely don't hate your comment, and I honestly appreciate your feedback. Being truly yourself online when you know lots of people are watching can be difficult, but it's something I continue to work on 💚
