I was 7 years old when they filmed this in my home town a block from my house (in Santa Paula, California). My older brother was one of the extras. The vast majority of the movie's exterior shots were in Santa Paula. They used the High School girl's gym for the hospital and I still remember the helicopter landing on the baseball field near the tennis courts. Although movies and television shows were filmed in Santa Paula all the time, this one was the biggest production that I can recall seeing in all the years I lived there. I never knew it starred Stephanie Zimbalist and since I was a huge fan of Remington Steele, it was great to watch this again.

This film, like stated in the opening, is based on true events. On March 24th 1972, a Penn Central freight train heading through Congers New York (on the present day river line owned by CSX) crashed into a school bus killing five students. Various moments in the film were based on the days following the Congers wreck. The church scene where the locomotive horn can be heard happened in real life, and the way the train hit the bus was in a similar fashion to the actual accident.
@ritaturner9906 Жыл бұрын
Do you know how many kids were in the bus?
@AdamGussow5 ай бұрын
I grew up in Congers, one mile from where the bus-train crash took place, and I was the same age as Bobby Mauterer, 14, who was one of the five boys who died. I just revisited the site this past weekend. Interestingly, the road on which the bus was traveling, Gilchrest Road, was and is the dividing line between Valley Cottage (to the south) and Congers (to the north). All five of the boys who were killed, and all of the kids on the bus, more or less, were residents of Valley Cottage; all were on their way to Nyack High School. (Congers kids went to Clarkstown North or the catholic HS, Albertus Magnus.) The train, heading north, collided with the bus on that boundary and, after rear third of the bus sheared off and flipped, pushed the wrecked front two-thirds of the bus 1100 feet up the track towards downtown Congers, which was roughly one mile north of where the train engine and impaled bus came to rest. The very first first responders were from Congers--Joan Fitzgerald and her family, who lived directly adjacent to the crash site--although cops, firefighters, and ambulance crews from all over Rockland County soon showed up. I've always thought of this disaster--the worst bus-train crash in NY state, I believe--as a Congers story, and it was that. But it was just as much, or more, a Valley Cottage and Nyack story. It was by far the biggest thing that had ever happened in Rockland County, in national terms; only the Brinks armed robbery in 1981 came close. Stories continue to be written in the local paper, the Journal News, on the major anniversaries. 52 years after it happened, people my age still remember the event and its aftermath with very heavy hearts.

A really good movie and a story that's very inspiring and profound. And I know that they have to dramatize things to make it a better story and more entertaining. But still. Do you ever notice that the characters in these movies who are the victims of this type of tragedy always seem to be these exceptional type of people? They're always super smart, athletic, beautiful, popular, talented, and high achievers. I'm not saying that these accidents don't happen to that kind of person. But they must happen to just your average every day type of person too. The victim in real life can't always be your Super Achiever exceptional person. That must be the thing they alter for dramatic purposes.

I don't think people realize the source for this movie was the March 24 1972 train bus crash in Congers, New York where an overloaded school bus was driven in front of a Penn Central railroad freight train killing 5 and seriously injuring most of the school kids on board. My sister and cousin were amongst the seriously injured and the dead were neighbors. This program softens what was mostly terrifying shock and silent resignation. Celia is a general analogy for two girls who lost limbs in that accident: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilchrest_Road,_New_York_crossing_accident

I hope your sister and cousin did not get seriously injured and are doing well. This movie was very inspirational and emotional. This accident helped set a precedent for all school buses to stop at all railroad crossings. It is sad it took an unfortunate to make that happen. I know the accident had to do with the aggressive way the bus driver drove. Thank you for letting us know your story. I wish you and your family all the best.

So awful for any parent to have to say to a child and for the child to have to process and deal with. I don't think the dad was being a jerk. Based on the real Penn Central grade crossing accident at Congers New York in 1972. Penn Central was a hard luck railroad that had grade crossings everywhere in the east. Penn Central was having as many as 600 derailments in a single month at the height of the their bankruptcy. One of those accidents occured in Cleveland in 1974 involving a movable bridge that was lowered directy in front of an oncoming freight. The lead GP40 units slammed into the immense counter weight of the open vertical lift. The crew riding the lead locomotive were all killed when everything above the frame of the lead units was sheared off.

Although I wish they used the same type of bus and what to much more of a realistic simulation of what happened this movie is still great and its suprising this event was covered 6 years later

She would have had phantom pain . Which is a real thing . People didn't really understand it back then..

I remember this when it first aired. I believe this why there is a law where buses have to always stop at a train crossing and keep their doors open when crossing the tracks.

An update--the hospital exterior used in the movie, what we used to call the High School "Girl's Gym" burned down November 27, 2022. It was nearly 90 years old and most anyone who grew up in Santa Paula had some connection to it.

WOW!! I knew the Engineer back then in 1978 that was operating the train that hit the bus, Filmed on the Ventura County Railway company, South Oxnard at the Halaco spur. Lorimar Productions filmed both there and in Santa Paula,California for the church scene. Gee Pina was his name , and he was in the frightening shot of the bus on the tracks. Kevin Kane was the real engineer that was really hitting the make-believe bus with fake dolls in it. Well that's a wrap!!

Rick Madrid. Respect to them both for their attempts to portray incidents from a terrible real life accident that took the lives of five young people and left many injured and disabled. That couldn't have been easy for them!
