The original ending had a flash of "YOUR TURN" for just a few frames, but that cut never even made it to theaters due to suicide prevention groups influence.

This scene is so powerful. It's dark and disturbing and at the same time there's something sweet and beautiful about it. Suicide is horrible, and yet somehow I completely understand why he's doing it. When the screen fades to black it has me believing that Max and Nicky are together somewhere, somehow, happy and at peace.
@ziahood5003
@ziahood5003 3 жыл бұрын
beautifully said. this movie, although seemingly hollow to some at first glance, is extraordinarily revolutionary. there’s something new every time you watch it, that somehow changes the entirety of the plot. everything about this movie, especially this end scene, is disturbing, dark, horrifying, but somehow compellingly beautiful.
@ziahood5003
@ziahood5003 3 жыл бұрын
also, why do you think that’s how the ending went (nicky and max being together in the end and being happy), since there’s so many ways the end could’ve been interpreted? like i said, depending on how you interpret the ending (and other parts), it changes parts of the plot
@deadpelicanguy

@@ziahood5003 It's more of a vibe that I get. I guess it's because she sounds convincing when she tells him that to become the new flesh, he has to kill the old flesh. She says that she is going to show him the way and I guess I believe her. She tells him that he's moving to the next phase so I guess I believe her.
@ziahood5003
@ziahood5003 3 жыл бұрын
@@deadpelicanguy yeah, i can see that. the thing is is that we have to remember that it's not really nicki in the TV - she's a hallucination most of the time. so it's kind of up to us to determine when max is hallucinating, when it's videodrome, and when it's real (if it even is lol).
@arcane8110
@arcane8110 2 жыл бұрын
@@ziahood5003 Yeah exactly, at this point, Max's mind could be completely distorted by Videodrome's power and he's been driven to end himself because of it - hence all the hallucinations of Nikki.

Only Cronenberg can make a suicide feel hopeful and optimistic. This is a movie that makes you want to burn the world down.
@marcusdaloia2974
@marcusdaloia2974 2 жыл бұрын
I think that suicide is generally a act of optimism. Desperation as well but if it wasn't at least slightly optimistic then even that wouldn't be enough. At least in this context it's, if I'm reading it right, a promise of something other then relief.

the only way it’s remotely hopeful is if you look at it entirely meta, which it somewhat intends, otherwise it’s just his mind being beaten with the illusion of success. same as most dystopian fiction.

I've seen this movie many times, but for the first time I noticed that in the simulation he doesn't smile; and in reality, as we know it, he does. This opens up so many wonderful metaphors and allegories I fear to even tread them.

I know many will disagree with me, but I do not believe this is a nihilistic ending. Rather, I see it as both life-affirming - and death-affirming. Only by letting go the 'old flesh', which is, the body rejecting technology, can mankind achieve its next evolutionary step, as O'Blivion said. I believe Bianca O'Blivion did not program Max to commit suicide: I think his own hallucination of Nikki shows that his 'new flesh', his new techno-biological self, has become self-aware and is guiding him to let go of the old flesh. That's why the suicide happens twice: Max firsts lets go of his old flesh, and then appears on our own screens to guide us to do the same. The message is very clear: technology mustn't simply be 'controlled' (like Videodrome wants us to believe), nor must we simply 'control' technology (like the Cathode Ray Mission). Max embraces the new flesh by becoming something else entirely, the true joining of biological and technical. He BECOMES the television signal, and the radio wave is now his new true body.

i don’t necessarily disagree, but i’m curious to ask you more. there’s too much to be said about this movie then i’m merely a youtube comment, but the ending (along with many other scenes in this movie), can be interpreted in many different ways, and depending on how you choose to interpret it, key places in the plot change. this movie does have a “clear” message (controlling of technology + insanity/psychological torture due to technology), but it’s definitely a movie that needs to be watched and analyzed many times to begin to understand the hidden meanings behind it, which to me, are much more important then the “central” one

Hmmmm... yeah, I dunno. It seems more likely that he was used as a pawn, and then manipulated into killing himself after he outlived his usefulness. Earlier on, he was a passive receiver of programming, but then he becomes somewhat empowered in that he develops a capacity to destroy. So it seems likely that someone used him to take out Harlan and Convex, but now they want to be rid of him because he's dangerous.

There is an alternate ending scene where as Max raises his hand to shoot himself at the very end, you see that unlike the scene on the tv his hand is normal and not deformed and gun shaped.. And he's not holding a gun either, its just empty. Max makes the motion of pulling the trigger with his empty hand, but as the screen goes black you still hear a gunshot. So its open to interpretation. It was in some of the ads and tv versions, but I dont think it ever played in theaters.
