Wayne Kramer : how are you doing these days? I just wanted to relate to you how and when I became a fan of the MC5. It was 50 years ago and I was in 6th grade, 12 years old. One day my teacher told myself and my classmates that she had an idea about something she suggested we do the next day which was Friday. She said something to the effect ( don't remember the exact words ) that she would bring in a few of her favorite records, listen to them, and after each record, go around from student to student and have them give an opinion about each one. Of course, everyone was enthusiastic over her idea; anything to avoid a typical day studying subjects from the curriculum. The next day she brought in albums by Hendrix, Iron Butterfly, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Jefferson Airplane and the MC5. There were mixed reactions. Many kids just ignored the music and goofed around, I remember that I 1.) Liked Axis: Bold As Love by Jimi Hendrix because the guitar playing and vocal sounded cool. 2.) Liked Surrealistic Pillow by the Jefferson Airplane because Grace Slick had such wonderful vocals, especially on White Rabbit and Somebody To Love. 3.) Liked Willie and the Poorboys by CCR because I already had several 7" singles and the LP's Green River and Bayou Country. 4.) Liked In-a-Gadda-da-Vida by Iron Butterfly, not caring much for the shorter songs on Side 2. 5.) When she played Kick Out the Jams by your band, the MC5, I remember telling my teacher that it was my favorite. I loved the loud, heavy-duty guitars, the fast tempos and, I especially remember liking the wild, reckless feeling it had; the feeling that it could go completely out of control any minute. Most, but not all of my classmates hated it. The few of us that liked it hung around our teacher, pouring over the artwork and asking lots of questions about the band. On a sad note, a couple of kids told their parents about spending most of the afternoon listening to rock and roll records. The parents complained, and she got reprimanded, but that ended any further record listening with our teacher. She was the coolest teacher I ever had. That was my introduction to the MC5.

I saw the fab 5 in a broken down former bowling alley in a forsaken city, Peekskill NY June 14 1969, they hit their stride right at that magic moment. Breathtakingly incredible. I'm 69 now in June. 400 angry white teens co mingled with 200 REAL black panthers. We were young, strong, focused, and seething with 60's anger. The 5? Came out with after the Left Banke tried to quell and warm up the small gathering. The 5 burst onto the stage with stars/stripes, bangles, shiny suits of pastals colors and more. They possessed more energy than this whole lousy century will produce in one min. Unforgettable and I'm so sad, like a few commenters here, I too lived in MI. Birmingham. I used to go to a lousy little bar/restaurant on Old Woodward near Creem Mag HQ where the 5 put down the jive many many times in their prime. There will never be a rock and roll group like them. No comp

@@f.w.2054 YES well the world of 1969 was NOT thankfully INFORMATION overload. The MC5 probably had no cognizant of the monumental event you mention here. I'm from Westchester. Reactionaries are not only in the South and West. The red scare was/is all they have. Today we casually and blindly trade with fascists, communist countries and are 1% away depending on the votes of rubes from a so called elected (never the popular vote) fascist regime with full powers unchecked thanks to Roberts et al. I don’t know if footage exists of the MC5’s performance that day, but it was at an event supposed to be the Chicago version of Woodstock, but the Chicago cops are no joke and all the artists except MC5 and Janis Joplin backed out, and only MC5 actually played before it got too hairy. That spot in Grant Park is known as Cricket Hill and I’m lucky enough to have played on that exact spot once with my own band, and if you played one of the legendary 90’s Chicago events known as Punk Picnics, you did too. Kick out the jams forever.
