Natural styles. Relaxers. Flat iron sometimes. No one can win! We all have to figure out the best way to maintain our hair and help it grow. Most of us don't want butt length hair, but we just don't want constant breakage.

Exactly how I feel, wear it natural can still get mechanical damage, wear a ponytail or bun damage, wash and go = damage = blow dryer = damage flat iron = damage like everything is damaging apparently I’m so over it and I just do what I feel bare in mind I try to do it in the healthiest way possible.

Yeah, "natural" still can't take rough treatment and heat. My hair just can't take any heat, I need a good wash and soak and then products to keep the moisture in. If I tried to blowdry it, I'd have to rewash it al over again. I want soft hair, not straw so no heat for me. I don't know how these women stil have hair at all after all the steam coming out from straightening. No wonder it breaks. And no matter what the ends tangle more so I just cut it when needed.

I did a silk press one time in 10 years and the heat damaged my hair. She used light heat because I have very fine hair… but healthy. Heat is not for everyone, but like she said, Learn your hair and what works for you. As a medical provider my hair is thriving, and while I don’t do wash and go’s, my hair thrives with a weekly consistent routine, putting it in 4 plaits, leaving it alone, and a great relationship with my cosmetologist. Figure out if there is a medical problem causing breakage and damage by seeing your health care provider, but also a good diet is essential as well.

I don't know how but I figured out doing the same styles over and over is detrimental to my hair. My caucasian friend started to lose hair from stress and I told her to change her parting. She also used to put her hair up tight in a claw clip for work. I never saw her with a ponytail or a bun. Fast forward 15 years I'm sitting in my trichologist chair in London at age 42 and my trichologist told me to change my parting after wearing braids for 4 weeks, my own hair for 2 weeks, and braids for another 4 weeks. She said that my scalp was inflamed from wearing a middle part from front to nape for 10 weeks. Good job we caught it early....Meanwhile, our people out here are wearing braids for 4 months with no shampoo... No ma'am. I'm trying to keep as much hair as I can while aging. I know I will lose some but I don't want to be noticeably bald in patches. I know I ran around and did craziness in my teens and twenties but eventually the hair and the follicles and the scalpstrikes back! Not including, postpartum/post-natal and menopausal and perimenopausal hair loss, cancer and 4 decades of damage. Yeah I watch the young women and then say to myself "you are over 40 don't try it." Lol! Same way I ate a bunch of cheese in my twenties and now I can't even eat cheese more than an ounce of cheese every week otherwise my cholesterol spikes!! Wrinkles and grey hair are the least of my problems when getting old. Lol!

So, many people have the misconception that natural curly hair has less maintenance than other textures. In addition, thanks for the video content featuring the importance of cutting off those damaged ends to avoid further splitting. So. Many people are so fascinated with length versus health. I chop my fine- textured curly locks every year for this reason. The hair grows back in a much healthy state .

Your scientific approach to hair, discussing follicles, and more, reminds me of my mom, a cosmetologist. Wash-n-gos were my style of choice but as of last week I went back to silk pressing. And as a matter of fact, I wear my hair in the style of your client in this video. I finally straightened my hair for the first time 6 years later and wanted to scream when I realized how many single-strand knots were in my hair 🥲😩 So I continued wearing straight styles consistently (unless I was doing a protective style) for the past 5 years and my hair has grown SO much and way quicker than it did when I wore natural styles. I also don't use a bunch of products and oils, and that has definitely contributed to my hair getting stronger and longer. Just shampoo, leave-in conditioner and heat protectant. @@JadeJade333 I trimmed and occasionally dusted my hair (as this was encouraged by many natural hair "gurus" at the time); however, single strand knots can happen almost anywhere along the hair shaft. If I cut the knots one by one when I came across them, I'd end up with a botched "haircut" lol. And even when trimming my natural hair, I could never gauge the true health or length of my hair until I straightened it, which I think was one of the main points of the video! I admit it's my fault, as it is my own hair, but I think the warnings in this video are valid, as many, if not most, *modern* naturals take care of their hair 100% on their own/at home (not by a licensed stylist).
@oliviavalm
@oliviavalm 8 ай бұрын
@@JadeJade333 I thought that by mentioning the timeline of when I went natural in my original comment, it would imply that I went natural at the height of "the natural hair trend" (I know natural hair is not a trend, but this was a time when it was trendy for a LOT of relaxed-hair people to big chop or transition to natural), and that trend was promoted by "natural hair gurus" on KZbin and they were notttt encouraging people to go to licensed stylists. At all. It was just a different time. Also, I don't think it's fair to say she hates natural textures. It's common sense that heat damage CAN occur...she doesn't need to say that and it's honestly silly to think ANY licensed stylist would voluntarily say their methods could possibly cause damage lol. I love how informative this was and I can 100% agree being I’ve had hair since birth and these styles I don’t wear and if I do it rare because I was seeing the damage after prolonged wear. I flat iron my hair maybe 7-9 times a year but I do blow dry my hair about 8-12 times a year I have better results with blow dried hair and it’s noticeably healthier when I do flat iron my hair

This is a very interesting perspective on caring for the natural curlys. I have very thick 3b low porosity hair and I practice the curly girl method heavily and don’t have a lot of breakage or that cone shape in my hair. I however only wash my hair once a week oil my scalp only and do maintenance dusting on my curls. Before learning what worked well for my hair however I did used to experience a lot of one sided or cone shaped damage. Learning what works for the curls is always a plus to beautiful curly qs

I just found your channel and I believe you are right about curly natural vs straight! I just came to this realization after struggling for the past 2 yrs with my bra band length, air dried hair. I dread wash day because my hair gets sooooo tangled and matted. I actually think I was forming dreads. And I’m talking after a week or two after wash, condition, put in ponytail and air dry. I just decided last week that I will not air dry any more, even if I don’t flat iron afterwards.

I called myself “not doing too much heat” by allowing my hair to air dry in a “stretched” state after applying leave-in conditioner and heat protectant. When I went to separate my hair into sections and started the 1st straightening with electric comb, some my hair came out with the comb. I said to myself “well dayum!” Nonetheless I realized I need to blow dry my hair BEFORE doing any straightening. And from this video, I am reminded that hair doesn’t like a lot of moisture since moisture will cause it to dry out even more.

This is not typical, though. My hair was thick af as a kid. Thinned out some due to improper hair care(my teen self) and relaxers. When I went natural, I didn't have these issues. I mainly did mini twists and wash n go when it was shorter. The longer it got, wash n go style was no longer useful to me. I got my hair straightened maybe 3 times in the 10 years I was a loose natural, and that was when I got trims if necessary. When straight, my hair never looked like that. I've only had breakage on my right side, and that was before being natural. I am loc'd now (4 years) and still use minimal products. Anyway, great job, but these issues, although widespread, are not typical.

Dang, you're retired?! You are so knowledgeable, and I need a stylist like you to do my hair. Do you know of anyone in LA that is knowledgeable like you? My hair really needs help. Its so difficult to find someone with your hair knowledge. I just went to place that "specializes" in blo drying. I am hispanic and have kinky coarse hair. I told them this and that I needed somone who knows how to do my hair. They set me up with someone who does not have black in their background. They dont know how to how to work with this hair. The result was an almost 2 hour appointment and the ends werent done. She didnt know what she was doing. The minute i walked out of the salon it kinked up right away. WASTE OF MONEY. Last time I go to their salon. Of course the receptionist is giving me excuses. I told her when I made the appointment I asked for someone who knows how to work with my hair. She said my stylist is one of the best stylists in the salon. I said she didnt know how to work with my hair. It should take at the most an hour to blow out my hair and she is telling me that my hair usually takes longer. Ive had my hair done since I was 9 years old, and I know. And, the women who did my hair back in NYC could get my hair bone straight with just a blo dryer. They didnt even have to use a flat iron. They knew how to work with my hair, but I no longer live there. LA is a whole different animal and I'm having a difficult time finding someone. Sorry this is so long.

With silk press being $145+, I don’t see myself spending that every 2 weeks, especially being a student. My hair is damaged and I don’t care about cutting it off, I want my health and length back. Every thing causes cancer, the food we eat, the sun, the drinks we drink, so besides that, I don’t see the issues with relaxers.
