Firstly: in case you don't know what FOMO stands for, it's "fear of missing out" (because it would be pretty ironic if I let anyone sit through this entire thing not knowing what it meant).
To be honest I wasn't sure how long this video was going to be going in to it but I sure wasn't expecting it to be this long?! But as I always say, I can never shut up about anthuriums 🫠

I could have been debt-free in 2021 after being in debt since 1993. I only had around 25k EUR to go. And I could have easily gotten myself out of that. But then came plants, and I spent way over 30k EUR in 2021 alone. 2022 was a bit better, as I started to understand the market dynamics and friended many serious collectors, growers, and commercial sellers. This year, I acquired only rarer plants and maybe two or three hybrid anthurium, some seed. But mainly, any money going out was for potting medium, etc. My policy was that I had to sell at least 2-3 of my own collection (+750 plants) before I would buy one new one. I feel this a lot. To think that I could've been debt-free for the first time at age 45, and I decided to spend it on plants... That's... I am not proud of it. On the other hand, I now know I needed those plants at the time to keep me sane.

@@sherrykumar2883 yeah, for sure. I was so used to being among people (I’m a speaker in my industry), traveling, seeing my two older children (they live in a different country), it was hell. I didn’t know what to do with myself. Plants gave me something to literally dig into for days, to care something that’s alive, to participate in the community around the hobby. I don’t regret what I did or choosing plants over being debt-free, but knowing what I know now, I wouldn’t have amassed so many. It was literally like playing Pokémon: You had to have them all. Even if you didn’t even love them. The sense of validation on IG and FB became addictive real quick. 😂

Putting as much as possible on timers and self watering pots have made all the difference in making my plant game more enjoyable. And tailoring my substrate to my environment and watering habits. I used to water plants on their schedule. Now, I tailor the substrate more to my habits, if you get what I mean.

I have tried white shark and tree fern fiber. My Anthuriums are growing roots like crazy. I also add a little bit of stratum. I had a root in 5 days. Go from the top of a medium clear Dutch bro Coffee cup and go to the bottom. It was crazy. I didn't believe it and I was like dang the stuff. You as SO RIGHT about elitism in the Anthurium community. It is not a welcoming place. At least within the social media Anthurium groups, any time I would ask a question or seek clarification, I was met with ridicule and jokes or just rude responses. I've stopped trying to engage and I'm much happier now :)

just wanted to pop in a little late: you might already know this but you can put a "-" sign without a space in front of search terms that you want to exclude from your google search. For example I wanted to look up "Philodendron Majesty" but the search was cluttered with results for "Philodendron Majestic", so I typed in "Philodendron Majesty -majestic" instead to only see Majesty. So maybe you can exlude stuff like " -healing -energy -chakras " or something like that :D

I am 63 and have had plants since my teens.. I am not influenced by the "hot" plants but the substrates make me curious.. but now as I am trying pon and semi-hydro I see people changing to tree fern or chunky or soil mix.. I did join your discord but I don't partake very much because I don't get that deep into the growth of plants. And I have no time for mean, nasty and unkind people.. The most I’ve spent on a plant is $250 USD. I got a Monstera Albo and I was able to prop it, gave the top cutting to my daughter so that justified the amount I spent on it. My husband purchased a large Thai Constellation for me for Xmas last year I think, I think he paid about $375 USD…so those are the most expensive plants I currently own. My daughter has a good eye for finding plants at reasonable prices. We do chop and prop a lot so we are constantly gifting each other plants from our collection. I recently gave a friend of mine one of my Monstera Albo cuttings, I rooted it for her, potted it up and she was ecstatic! My oldest plant is my trusty pothos ivy that I’ve had for about 10 years and a large drama queen Calathea Orbifolia. I don’t really have plant FOMO, I know there are stunning plants out there that are unobtainable and not wallet friendly. My biggest issue is “where is this plant going to go?” I’ve started taking plants to work, I have 3 large windows to set plants in. 😁 Now if my daughter and I go out plant shopping, I set a budget and I stick to it. I will treat my daughter to plants and not get anything for myself because I know I’ll get one of her propagations at some point in time. I tend to gravitate more toward Philodendrons because I find them easier than Anthuriums. However I do have them in my collection. I just recently (within the last 6 months) started to transition them from soil to pon, it’s made my life easier! What I would love to see is a breakdown of fertilizers you use for your Anthuriums…you have gorgeous plants! I think that’s what I struggle with a bit…fertilizers. Love your channel!

I love how you guys keep talking about anthuriums and humidity and it's exactly the same with ferns! I've been saying it to anyone who is willing to listen :) they don't need humidity, they need water. I so wish you'd get into ferns..................... I'm craving a good channel with ferns, aroids are cool etc but ferns are the coolest!

ok here's my big wonder about anthurium. why is it so much harder to find the parent plants of a lot of hybrids? I went into anthurium thinking "I don't wanna get hybrids, I want to get the parents first" and quickly found out it is REAL expensive to do that. part of me is wondering if it's a spiritus sancti situation where there are a ton out there but production greenhouses withhold them to maintain high prices; part of me wonders if it's because the way anthurium breed and how different a seed batch can look - like maybe "mother plants" are never going to be that consistent. maybe this is a weird question, I hope that made sense :'D

I didn’t know about this plant boom until recently when I discovered this little niche of KZbin videos a few months ago. I have to say the antherium clarinervium is a telltale plant. Every KZbinr with very few exceptions seems to have this plant. It just sticks out like a sore thumb on their plant shelves. Not a judgment, more of an observation. In fact, when I saw one at a local plant shop I had to have it but at the same time I felt a little self conscious about getting it. Like I was giving in to FOMO. I have had it for about 2 months and it hasn’t grown but hasn’t suffered either. It feels like a test of my plant skills… I’ve always owned plants, but I’ve been someone who didn’t read up or research plants. As a result, I have quite a few plants that I’ve had for 30 some years, that really should be bigger and healthier but they have survived; pothos, Christmas cactus etc. KZbin has made it so much easier to figure all this out. So, thanks for that! Now when I buy a plant, I do a bit of KZbin research to make sure I’m giving it what it needs. The other thing that has changed the plant game is the availability of inexpensive grow lights. This was not even an option 30 years ago, so optimal light real estate in my home really limited the number of plants I could own. It is really tempting to just keep on buying more… but I think there’s a point at which it’s just too overwhelming to care for them all. I’m almost there. I think that number for me is about 80. My plan is that if I want more, I will have to sell or give away a plant… we will see how that goes. The most I have ever spent on 1 plant is 35 dollars I think… singonium albo and that was just a few days ago. I looked at the frydeck for 88 dollars and said no. Beautiful plant; not in my snack bracket, and not enough confidence that I can keep it alive lol. Love your channel. Love your honesty. 🇨🇦

Yeah i agree about being patient about this hobby. I have been impulsive about collecting this plants just to be part of my collection. Now, i found something easy thanks to my supplier, for those expensive plants even it is in the market quite sometimes, they allowed me for lay aways. I think its a good option if you want to own an expensive plant. Also i really wanna own a mature plant as im not always around home to take good care about them..

This is my 3rd winter in my new home. I have had plants passed away through pests and don’t have the conditions especially tropical plants the leaves just crisp up. Also succulents I struggle getting the watering right and only summer time have good weather for them. I never went crazy with plant shopping cause don’t have the budget for also cannot justify spending on one plant that is expensive. I wait for prices to come down. Now i only collect plants that are more low maintenance. I like growing my plants outside my home conditions so i don’t use cabinets and green house. And only grow lights in the winter seasons the clip on ones. I am not into adroids and aerial plants and plants that grow in a 360. Anthurium the roots actually make me sick cause there so thick and overwhelming and look like spider legs creeps me out. Didn’t know that until i purchased the Anthurium Silver Bush and end up giving it away. I prefer finer roots. I guess we all have our own preferences when comes to plants what we like and what we want to grow.

I like that you brought up the importance of just being a good member of the plant community. I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t just buy a plant from anyone on Facebook and have focused more on buying from sellers that I love and trust even if that means paying more (shipping for NST 😆) or having less availability. Being more active on plant instagram has helped too with seeing some things that I may not have otherwise found out about that end up deterring me from purchasing from certain people. It does help with the feeling of overwhelm and fomo though because I’m only really seriously shopping from a handful of people. Then I’m able to switch into an observer mindset and just look at the pretty plants when it’s a seller I’m not familiar with or wouldn’t purchase from if that makes sense. Personally I love your chatty videos that aren’t just on one topic, so don’t be afraid to do more of that if it’s easier on you!! Lovely vid as always 💖

Thank You Charmaine. I cannot express the guilt I have over this little Tetrisperma that I have sat outside...I just can't. It's been nothing but a struggle all year and it now has flat mites and I am done. Here in Florida you can get the plant at every store for less than an hourly wage so why in the world am I going to let it steal 1 more ounce of my joy? I feel bad for giving up but I have so many plants that I Love and that are doing good and need my attention. Thank you for helping me not feel so bad about "giving up". Those damn mites are NOT worth my entire collection!

Fortunately i didn’t get into collecting until the end of 2021. Prices were better for sure, but I was buying so many plants indiscriminately like you said. Most things I was buying were pretty reasonable but it was a lot. I definitely am starting to figure out what I like in plants. I’m moving and have to cut my collection in half since I am downsizing my home pretty significantly. But honestly I am looking forward to only having plants that I really love. The most I spent on a plant was an albo monstera of course. After buying two cuttings, one just a node and another with a leaf, and both rotting on me, I just decided I wanted one that was already established. So I spent $300 on one. Both of those cuttings were almost 100 each. So total I spent $500 to try to get an albo. I definitely feel ashamed about that one lol. The sad thing is I don’t even really love it that much. But I’m having fun propagating and air layering. I will probably give one to my bestie and sell the rest. Hopefully try to get some money back. Luckily they still hold their value pretty well…

I related to this so much! With my whole collection over all. As for Tree Fern, I've been using a tree fern/soil mix for about 6-7 months now and my Anthuriums and Philo's love it. For the Philo's though I mix with Coco Coir instead of soil. Rehabbing Anthuriums I use tree fern/perlite. You turned me on to Great White which I love but now I'm experimenting with Dynomyco too. For Hybrids personally there are so many now that I look for the parent plants because they are not talked about as much anymore so my interest is there. That's not to say I don't have many hybrids because I do!

Fern hun. Not pushing what I use for my plant collection. I grow my collection as follows; 55% in LECA, 50% in PON, and 5% aroid soul mix. And I only use 1 very easy to use product... Liquidirt. Every plant in my collection get it with each watering. If I miss adding it one week, it's not a big deal. I can adjust the concentration as needed but how much I add to the watering jug. And I've been using it for 3 yrs straight now.

I feel kind of lucky that my neurodivergent weird brain only focuses on a very limited field of greenery. I'm into anthuriums (surprise :D it's why I watch this channel) but I got a very clear cut vision of what I like and what I don't. Even within the anthurium world, there are plenty that I don't want at all. It's very interesting to hear about other people's experiences. I think anthuriums can be a massive sinkhole for some, they got that gambling edge to them in a way that can be very addictive due to their insane natural variability. It's a strange blessing & curse combo, they provide limitless excitement but at the same time they can just suck you in and you find yourself in situations where you get the FOMO thing. It's somewhat of a unique aspect of the hobby, most other popular genus are very predictable in terms of their looks etc. while growing them. I might be talking crap though :) No idea if this might help anyone, but one tip is to find the one you know you love to bits, and maybe get the 2nd / 3rd specimen in. They will have the characteristics you love but will look vastly different at the same time. This might help find a focus through all the madness.

I actually started with anthurium with seeds and small seedlings because it was cheaper. Glad i started that way as I learned so much about care and mistakes didnt hurt the pocket as much. I did have a hard time getting seedlings to bump up in size in pon. So i switched to soil/tree fern mix and taller containers. In no time they bumped up in size , so I'm a fan of tree fern. Switched a debilis to it and finally got more than 1 leaf 🍃

the clover looking things on debile are ferns :) it's the first stage of fern growth, the prothallus. If you give it enough flowing water it will develop into a fern.

I love tree firn fiber . It is my go to for a long time now . I use it on my philodendron as well . I also use grate white it truly is a game changer. Aren't most Anthurium on the market these days mostly hybrid, i love all the different variations. Keep the Anthurium content coming 👌 I ❤ Anthurium.

I did a tiktok about the recessive red crystal genes last week 😂 Folks should definitely do their research before buying because I've seen so many people disappointed when they buy a red crystallinum seed or seedling thinking it's going to be high color red, purple, or neon pink and it's not. I understand cause if I was just starting out and I saw 2 high color red crystal parents, I'd also think a lot of the seeds would turn out that way but unfortunately that is most often not the case. From the dozens of batches and posts I've seen on FB and IG from large and small growers alike, in most cases only a select few, if any, in the seed batch will be high color. Tezula can be pricey but at least with their older red crystal drops back in 2021-2022 (primarily when I was buying) they parsed out premium high color ones so at least you knew what you were getting.

I’ve bred show dogs for 30+ years so my dislike of dog hybrids bled over to my plant collecting for awhile. Not anymore, but that’s where it came from for me.

I am generally deterred from buying hybrids and gravitate towards the pure species and that has a lot to do with the following: 1) current living situation - 16m² dorm room 2)hybrids of a certain crossing are super variable 3) charmaine said this, but we have our whole lives to grow plants leading to point 4 4)having confidence in my own skills as a grower, more often than not I'll just prefer to do the crossing myself and wait until I can keep the seedlings that I personally find the most esthetically pleasing. The only reason I would buy a hybrid would be if I'm into the general vibe but even then I'll only get max one e.g. lux hybrid (despite lux hybrids being it's own sort of bubble). Another situation where I'll personally opt to buy a hybrid is if the hybrid plant has super unique characteristics and I am just not able to even begin to attempt to recreate the similar looking plant (Dark Pheonix, Delta Force, HU, AOS, etc...). Lastly, there are some species that I just simply will never be able to grow to the point of it producing an inflorescence (splendidum, debile, other cloud forest species) so if I ever truly desire to have a hybrid of these plants (all extremely beautiful) I'll just eventually buy said hybrid. Hybrids, just like your videos are awesome and we can all learn to appreciate the beauty that comes with mixing up the gene pool...

Hey there, I have come to watch some of your video to get specific information but I find that it's so hard to just find out what I need to know when you don't put timestamps in there. This is just my personal feedback. Sometimes people come to your video for certain information and have to sit through an hour and a half of you talking just to get one minute of the information they wanted. Timestamps would be really great.

she has time stamps on her more informative videos,(talking about tree fern soil, what she knows about anthurium care, etc) but it wouldn't make sense to put timestamps on videos that are one and a half hrs long of just her chatting and repotting.

Wow I really appreciate this video and I def understand getting caught up in the impulsive purchases! Thanks so much for being honest! 🫶 I already planned on slowing down and only buying real wish list plants from now on when appropriate but you def helped me decide that was right for my family and I.
